What is the point of an HDD activity LED? I get that it lights up when there is activity on the primary harddrive, but how is that at all useful? Why is this a part of every modern motherboard and case?
>>
>>52163365
So you can tell the difference between locked up with hard drive activity (it's probably doing something) and locked up with no disk activity (probably time to reset)
>>
>>52163392
Shouldn't the light just be on the device itself then.
Or removable like a motherboard bios led.
>>
>>52163392
This
>>
>>52163392
I haven't had a computer freeze like that since windows xp 10 years ago. Is this still a real occurrence?
>>
>>52163365
i wonder why they even included them in the old days when the hard drive was the noisiest thing in the computer and you could always tell when it was doing something

hi /g/ im just wondering whats the name of those slots on the front of my desktop case where you can put optical drive readers and stuff? i have like 5 of them on my case, and i dont even have a cd drive because it's not 1938 anymore
what can i put in there instead?

pic unrelated
>>
>>52163500

(optical) drive bay?
>>
>>52163546
yeah those
>>
>>52163500
This seems completely relevant to the thread.
>>
>>52163405
That's a fucking retarded idea but I'm not going to tell you why because if I do you won't learn.

>>52163453
If you're installing an OS or doing really large file transfers it can sometimes happen still.

>>52163500
They make HDD/SSD cages you can put in there. Thermaltake makes a 4xSSD one that fits in a single bay. You can also put coolant reservoirs in there for water cooling.
>>
>>52163557
5.25 inch bay, there are adapters for 3.5 inch HDDs and for ssd's. Also a fan controller.

>not having a LTO tape drive
Lol poorfag.

It's called 5,25inch bay.
>>
Tbh I was annoyed the PS4 didn't have one.
>>
I don't think they're necessary anymore desu. I don't connect that LED on my case anyway
>>
>>52163716
>having an lto tape drive
Why anon? What do you need it for? I don't think anime will die out soon.
>>
It tips you off about background processes running that you weren't aware of, for one thing.
>>
>>52163751
archiving data
For example I had to move away form my server three 150GB backup images, so I just wrote them to one of my lto3 cartridges.
I got like 40 of them.
>>
>>52163453
Yes it is still common

Source: I'm a desktop support tech and I use the HDD indicator LED at least once a week to determine if I need to do a hard reset or not.
>>
This minimalism fad really, really, really needs to fucking die.

>I don't need it, so nobody else does! chop it out

>"Less is More"
This is only true if you are small minded and easily lose your train of thought. Oh no, my computer has an indicator light on it, better check it every 5 seconds and not when it's relevant.

>motherboard bios led.
What the fuck are you even taking about
>>
>>52164014
He probably means the leads that come from the case that go to the motherboard, like PLED and HDLED.
>>
>>52163977
>want to buy new case
>almost all of the mare "minimal" pieces of shit and look like fucking fridges or are reatrded "military gaming" tier or are apple mac pro clones
>>
>>52164046
>>52163716
doesn't this one look minimalistic?
>>
>>52164069
It's alright, what the name of it?
>>
>>52163365
>system seems slow or entirely frozen and unresponsive
Hard disk light is the first thing to check
>it's on
The system is doing something, wait a little while, maybe should look at a RAM upgrade or work within its limits if it's doing this for a normal every day job.
>It's off for an extended period of time
Something's fucked up, time to cut your losses and reset the system.

It kind of irks me that people like you are making these little things go away, intentionally or not.
>>
>>52164124
maybe if you weren't so computer illiterate you wouldn't break your system so often?
>>
>>52164092
fractal core 1000
cost me $10 used in perfect condition
>>
>>52164150
You sound like the computer illiterate one of you don't know how to do this basic kind of diagnostic procedure. It's a pretty common occurence, especially during large software installs for my particular use case.
>>
>>52164155
>mATX
Too small for my ATX main board
Oh well
>>
>>52164046
here's an idea, why not have a swinging door, or slide cover. then minimalist fags won't ruin the ports/lights when they jack off on it, and actual computer people can get information from it.

>years ago
>sliding door to get to SD/XD/media card readers
>people who don't need it open the slide
>"What's this"
>that's only if you have a camera, you don't need it
>oh ok
>no problems

why is the new fad choice to just chop it out
>>
>>52164207
doors are shit, sliding covers are pretty nice though on systems I've seen that had them.
>>
>>52164200
Then check out the Fractal Core 3000.
Alternatively there is a Fractal *R2 in both standard and XL standards
>>
>>52164207
>swinging door
Most minimal cases seem to have them. Problem is that if you remove the door the case is fucking ugly, if you leave it then you get problems with your optical drive and maybe cooling problems
>>
>>52164150
>break
if you've never run your system above 50% load for a meaningful period of time you should probably get yourself an iPad and fuck off to facebook, it sounds like it's a little more your speed
>>
>>52164233
>Fractal Core 3000
Too open at the top and I don't know if my shitty OEM PSU has long enough wires for bottom mounting
>Fractal *R2
Don't like the door design, I sometimes have to use DVDs. Also how good is the airflow on it?
>>
>>52163365
Just unplug it if it bothers you
>>
>>52163405
Didn't HDDs have LEDs in the early 2000's, late 90's? I wonder why they don't anymore
>>
>>52164367
I think my Hitachis still have a LED
>>
>>52164365
They don't care about the subject. They just want to bitch.
>>
>>52164367
They had onboard LEDs in the '80s when they were typically fit in external bays, enterprise drives kept them for a little longer.
>>
>>52163365
What is the point of
>Power indicator LEDs
>Reset buttons
>Power buttons (There's stand by now, get with the times gramps :^))
>Wireless LEDs
>Graphics cards (use on-board, it's good enough for me so it's also good enough for you)
>HDDs (just use SSDs, who needs to save more than 100GB anyway)
>Case fans (just leave your case open)
>CPU fans (just let your case open, the CPU will throttle itself anyway, but that won't happen during browsing facebook)
>a computer case (just build one out of paper, it's more environmental friendly)
>Keyboard (Just use the onscreen one with your mouse)
>>
>>52164433
my favourite joke journalist one of these is
>HDD and SSD and SD cards/etc are all obsolete nobody has storage anymore, "we" all just use the cloud
>>
>>52163557
>>52163500
5.25" bays
You can use them for storage like USB sticks, fan controller, water reservoir(watercooling), hdd's(with 3.5" converter) and a bunch of other stuff probably.
>>
>>52164433
>Power buttons (There's stand by now, get with the times gramps :^))
My computer literally comes up faster from a cold boot then sleep for some reason
SSD's becoming mainstream is the best thing that ever happened
>>
>>52164189
>i suck so much at computers i keep fucking everything up
>if you are competent enough to not break your computer every time you use it, you must be computer illieterate!

top tier retard logic
>>
>case has a power light and a HDD light
>want to use the power light inside the power button as the HDD light and leave the actual HDD light off forever
>the fucking cables for each light are different so retards can't swap them by accident.

fuck you corsair
>>
>>52166088
nothing's broken though famalam, it's called actually using your computer
>>
>>52163500
/g/ is now too young to know what 5.25" bays are, but they're old enough to build desktops... Fuck I'm old.

Also is that an X58 board? Fuck, I've been looking for an X58 board since forever to give my i7-920 a second chance in life.
>>
>>52166195
well that was from 5 years ago or so? and yeah, it's an x58 board, im surprised that those are hard to find

I kinda wish my HDDs had these lights.
I've got 4 HDDs and one SSD. Each one makes a different, fairly quiet sound when active. I can identify which ones are active at any given time. Even the SSD makes little noises. Most people think SSDs are perfectly silent or something, they're not.
>>
>>52163405
That'd be as retarded as the activity LED under the game card flap on the PS Vita.
>>
>>52166769
ssds are quiet you stupid fuck

just because your shitty ocz drive has coil whine issues doesn't mean we all do

fuck head
>>
>>52167237
listen closer my deaf friend, before you mindlessly insult me some more
even the best SSDs have chipsets that whine a little
>>
>>52167259
lol ok poorfag

enjoy your budget whining ssds
>>
>>52167259
Coils are something different. They wouldn't make noise to show activity, they'd be making noise because they're powering the fuck.
>>
>>52163365

I am currently on that laptop

It's so you don't kick it when it's active.
If you've never used it then you must have had a lot of dead computers.
>>

When I see the red LED light up and I'm not doing anything on my PC, I know I'm in good hands with Windows 10. Thank you Microsoft for protecting me from myself!
>>
>>52168013
You have money for a expensive rig full of noctuas, SLI of x80 GTX's, Tri-channel ram on six core i7, but you cant pay internet?
>>
>>52168039
i mean i could pay for internet sure. but then the feds will know what im downloading

also they're 460s, which were cheap even back then
>>
My computer screen has been going black and the HDD light turns off. Checked my wires, seems fine? Plz halp.
>win 10
>>
>>52167822
companies reuse these sorts of designs

thinkpads have kept the same LEDs for 15 years
>>
>>52170013
no they haven't
maybe the color, but new thinkpad LEDs are totally shit, there's not even a battery status LED on the inner block on my T420
>>
>>52168083
Have you tried turning the computer back on?
