Hey /g/

Looking to buy a new GPU. From what I can gather, it's dumb to wait for everything to cycle, as I'd like to upgrade now-ish and 6mo for things to really change is forever. Been looking at 970s since that seems to be the best option.

Price range is around 3-400 but if there's something extraordinary for a bit more, so be it?

Currently using a 660 so yeah, kinda time.

Thanks for any advice.
>>
>>>/wsr/

I have a 970 and absolutely love it, (don't listen to the memers- they're wrong) but I would go with an r9 390 assuming there aren't any nvidia features you want like shadowplay.

Oh, is this even a thing? Just assumed /g/ would be better, sorry.

I do a bit of stream and other bullshit so might be nice to have (I have actually used it before). Any particular model or specs you'd recommend?
>>
>>52130735
If you're going to stream get a dedicated rec card
>>
>>52130735
I have the Gigabyte G1 Gaming model which is what I'd reccomend to you if you've got a decently sized case. Windforce cards are sexy as fuck with their backplate & 3 fans.

Don't get a 970 if you're planning on future sli though.
>>
>>52130815
Do I really need to? It's been fine for me using my old card, even running on higher settings.
>>
>>52130893
Oh, do they not play nice with SLI? Last one I did with that was 2 460s, so that was a while ago.

They're fine but if you're at 1080p you'll be getting good playable framerates anyways, and if you go above 1080p the 3.5 gb can actually start to be a problem since you'll be consistently going over it.

More vram is always better for sli.

>>52130961
Want to talk about it, champ?

>>52130985
Well meme'd, friend.
>>
>>52130735
Shadowplay can stream to twitch using the dedicated hardware on the card, it saves lots of CPU but you will need to up the bitrate to get the same quality compared to CPU encoding.
>>
>>52131004
Ah, I do remember reading that they're actually 3.5 and not 4, though I assume that won't be that big of a deal? Though I thought I saw a 6 version (maybe that was a 980)?

Anyway I'll look some more I guess, just kinda hoping to get it soon while I still have time to fiddle with shit more.
>>
>>52131044
I don't CPU will be my problem (running a 4790k)? Though, interesting to know, thanks.
>>
>>52131106
You will be fine, if you got the money consider getting a 980 instead, the 970 is good but its already starting to show its age, new games can barely hold 60FPS at max settings. A 980 will last you at least two years more.
>>
>>52130673
I never understood this meme.
I use raptr with my hd 6870 and it works fine. I don't see any performance loss.
What is it about shadowplay that makes it so much better? Can someone explain this to me?
My friends been complaining about shadowplay making his display drivers crash every few times he tries using it.
He's on windows 10 and has a gtx 960.
>>
>>52131055
I think right now R9 390 is the better deal, Asus Strix or the Gigabyte G1 like anon said.
>>
>>52131128
I used raptr with my 7950 and some games would stop recording at loading screen while shadowplay works flawless, not to mention raptr overlay is ugly and slow and fuck.
>>
>>52131139
For AMD, avoid Asus in general, and Gigabyte's dual-fan cooler is noisy. Also their cards are voltage-locked.
Sapphire, Powercolor or MSI are the best option if your case can fit them.
>>
>>52131125
Any chance there's a 980 for sub 500 or so? It is tempting though just to future proof a bit more...

>>52131128
I literally only used it to record a few small clips. I stream with OBS

>>52131139
I really wish I weren't so retarded and wanting Nvidia. It really probably would be
>>
>>52131166
People say the Powercolor PCS+ cooler is loud af. Probably because of its fans' distance from the heatsink.
>>
>>52131152
Really?
Raptr works fine for me.
I've seen my friends shadowplay crash. You can still hear the game through the speakers but the display just freezes up for 1-2 minutes.
Also ugly interface doesn't bother me, I just want something that works.
>>
>>52131223
Weird, I've heard good things about them. The massive cooler should keep temps and noise down, in theory at least.
>>
>>52131214
GTX 980 are around $500 in newegg, some of them below $500 by a few bucks, make sure you are not mistaking it for the 980TI.

EVGA, MSI and Gigabyte are good.
>>
>>52131273
Yeah, looking at those now. Would I regret not shelling out the extra 150 for the TI version?
>>
>>52131214
When I was looking for a graphics vard in November the 970 was the best deal I saw - EVGA acx 2.0 with free game and backplate, I love it. If you have a 650-700w PSU you've got the oprion to accommodate AMD.
>>
>>52131279
The GTX 980TI is the best card in the market right now.

Almost as twice as fast a two GTX 970.
>>
>>52131298
I mean almost as twice as fast as a GTX 970.

Or faster than dual GTX 970 on SLI.
>>
>>52131280
Oh, PSU is by no means a problem- I got higher end ones just because I figured I'd use them forever/explode date. I doubt I'd ever exceed their W rating

>>52131298
Right but versus say... a normal 980?
That's crazy though (to me who has not paid attention since buying a 600TI)
>>
>>52131280
Nah, you'd need a quality 550W+ unit. Power consumption is usually pretty badly overestimated.
>>
>>52131309
Compared to the normal 980 is about 30% faster.
>>
>>52131329
And say, for this http://www.amazon.com/MSI-GTX-980TI-GAMING-6G/dp/B0106QZE62/

20% more expensive? Damn I dunno

Went from wanting to spend 300 to this haha
>>
>>52131359
How long are you planning to keep it until you upgrade?
>>
>>52131393
Until I can't get 60fps reasonably on new shit I guess? I doubt my CPU will be an issue before then either... I mean, that's what I've done with everything so far it seems.

I mainly do graphic work (other than vidya shit). Just when trying Fallout4 and needing to lower everything to get a passable FPS was painful
>>
>>52131427
A 390 will most likely last you longer than a 970 because of its massive VRAM advantage. That'd be my pick for $300-400. Unless you're going all-out and grabbing a 980Ti of course.
>>
>>52130635
I upgraded from an HD 7970 direct cuii to a MSI GTX 970 gaming, all I cant say is that you won't regret it.

Huge OC capability along with very low temp and barely no noise at all

go for it anon
>>
>>52131443
Yeah, that's the question... bite the bullet and get the 980TI, or...

>>52131454
I think anything I buy will be an upgrade at this point haha. Thanks though.

It's really whether or not the 980TI will last for years and such I guess. I mean I've used my 660 for years, and 460 same before, not like I buy stuff all the time. Bleh
>>
>>52131359
Yeah, MSI is good, if your budget is only $300 , I'd recommend a GTX 970 or AMD R9 390 depending which one you like more, then sell it in in one year or so and buy one of the new Pascal cards as they will use a new type of memory and be a lot stronger and use less power too not to mention they will have especial extras to, like the GTX 970 has MFAA which improves Anti Aliasing at the almost cost of nothing, 2XMSAA turns into 4xMSAA while still demanding performance close to 2xMSAA which is really nice.

The new GPU line up is going to bring a lot into the table as is a new architecture, that and with DirectX12 and Vulkan current generation GPUs might not last very long compared to older generations as like the 600 series and such.

I have a G1 Gaming GTX 970, 1 year old, lovely card I upgraded from a HD7950 and it was well worth it but I plan to sell it and upgrade to Pascal next year.
>>
>>52131512
Alright, so seems to get a 970 or all out and 980TI it haha.
I don't normally sell cards- I actually put them in a side computer which ends up being behind, but still gets a decent card. I realize this is probably dumb but it gives me 2 usable computers, even when 1 is entirely outdated.

My budget is technically <600 if I spend everything, the 300 was just preferable so I could buy other things, like booze or something
>>
>>52131566
Actually, you could take a look at a 390X. Trades blows with a 980 at 1080p and beats it at higher resolutions iirc.
Also it's cheaper than a 980.
>>
>>52131588
That's what I've heard, and actually had a friend do.

However, said friend and others I've heard have always had issues with AMD, and I've always done Nvidia and been fine. I know it's bullshit fanboying but I like to stay where I've been safe.
>>
>>52131623
Understandable, I haven't owned a recent NVidia card but a few of my friends have and they're doing fine. I'm currently running a 290 myself and it performs beautifully, too. I just tend to go with what gives me the best framerates for my money.
>>
when are gpu prices going to lower... i need a card badly but they just shoot up like 50$ past months...
>>
>>52131643
Which would be the mindset of a reasonable unbiased person haha.

I guess now I'm just looking at whether a 970 is fine for years, or a 980TI, for nearly 2x the money, but possible better futureproofing? The Amazon one I posted seemed to review well (yes, I know Amazon reviews)

>>52131660
Tell me about it
>>
>>52131674
>>52131660

970's and 380's are above their launch prices lol, both companies are trying to jew their users out which is why i really dont fall for the whole nvidia/amd war they will both screw you to high heaven either war
>>
>>52131674
I don't think the 970 is going to last too long because of the whole 3.5GB issue. A 980Ti is overkill for 1080p, but will last for a long time.

Then again, you could just buy a temporary upgrade to hold you over until the new generation launches, like I did. Went from a used GTS 250 to a used R9 270X, then snapped up a new 290 for relatively cheap when the 300 series launched and sold the old cards on.
>>
>>52130635
390x
>>
>>52131711
Huh, yeah, that's an idea. I just like to buy new and keep (have done that with everything PC-wise). I guess in that case a 980Ti is better? I doubt I'll do extreme resolutions but hey, better than outdated...

>>52131707
How about the 980Ti? Everything is so dumb expensive regardless though

>>52131716
Ideally trying to stay GTX but thanks. Certainly to consider
>>
>>52130673

This is the only correct answer

Do you need Nvidia's extras like shadow play or streaming your games to nvidia products like the shield tablet? Then buy an nvidia GPU and stay in the ecosystem

Otherwise save yourself the cash and buy an AMD GPU for a cheaper price/performance ratio
>>
Alright, OP here, so I guess it's between... 970, or a 980Ti (best and cheapest if you know).

I think 980 might be better just to last longer...?
>>
>>52131855
If you're considering the 980, I'd say 390X instead. AMD cards seem to age better.
Also 8GB is a big bonus if you ever wanna crossfire two cards.
>>
>>52131855
Is there a reason you're making the jump from $300 to $600 without considering the 390(X) or Fury?
>>
>>52131927
Yes. I technically can "afford" up to say... 650, but was hoping for a lot less. Granted, assuming it lasts me for much long than the 970, it would be worth it?

Also I said earlier - "said friend and others I've heard have always had issues with AMD, and I've always done Nvidia and been fine. I know it's bullshit fanboying but I like to stay where I've been safe"

I just like to stay in my comfort zone I guess. I haven't heard bad about what I'm looking at, though I have about Fury and others. Could easily be biased shit, of course, just explaining.
>>
Don't buy AMD they are trash, their new "crimson" driver which was supposedly to be a "BIG" driver release for them is full of bugs like
Downlocking, low GPU usage.
Elite Dangerous drops to 20fps in any card FOR MONTHS NOW.
game profiles do not work, which is a new "feature" of crimson.
SR3 has some graphical glitches
Battlefront 2 textures are flickering
GTA texture flickering and shadows disappearing
fallout 4 map hud doesn't loads and fallout 4 was a fucking big release.
>>
>>52132158
Uh... so thoughts on a 970 vs a 980ti then?
>>
>>52132158
What the fuck are you talking about? Crimson has been great on my r7 260x.

I get that op wants to stick with Nvidia but if you don't know how to install a driver then don't blame AMD. No shilling. Please.

>>52132198
I'd say try to get a 980 ti. It'll last a lot longer and perform better now. It'll easily last a lot longer too. My friend is still running a hd 5870 just fine, on a mix of medium /high settings.
He's struggling in newer games though, like gta v will give him around a 100fps on low, but on medium it'll drop to mid 40s because of the lack of vram. He leaves it on low and caps the framerate to 60 though, to keep temps down a bit.
>>
>>52132371
Yeah no shilling here, just personal preference.

Guess I'll look for the cheapest best 980. How does http://www.amazon.com/MSI-GTX-980TI-GAMING-6G/dp/B0106QZE62/ look?
>>
>>52132455
Yeah that's a decent one.
Have you checked newegg too?
>>
>>52132709
I have, but I have 20$ to Amazon haha. Even so, Newegg wasn't even cheaper that I saw for higher rated ones?
>>
>>52132709
Or, I should say...

What's the difference between http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127889 and http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127895 ?

I hope you don't play BLOPs III. 5-6GB used, can confirm as soon as I get back to my pc.
>>
>>52132850

>>
>>52132801
Take a look at the clock speeds. One is overclocked. Not worth paying extra for when you can do it yourself.
>>
>>52132906
Yeah that was the only thing I noticed, but I'm not very technically savvy anymore. I didn't think that'd be worth 40$ but hey I don't know

>What the fuck are you talking about? Crimson has been great on my r7 260x.

not the same guy, but I reverted back to CCC because Crim made FO4 with my r9 390 have more location based fps drops, made fps drop when i looked down, made the compass artifact like crazy, kept object in their "far away" textures unless I sat there and stared at it, and made what used to be a smooth mostly 60fps @1440p down to a jittery 40-55 with dips into the 20s.

My experience is surely in the minority but it fucking sucks to be in it
>>
>>52132767
Depending on your state Amazon may charge taxes though, keep that in mind. Amazon is really only worth it if you have Prime or if you can't be there for when UPS/Fedex come to your door.
