Best text editor for linux?
> Vim Master Race reporting in

There is no better text editor. No other editor is as easy to use, as powerful, as fast, or as simple as vim. With its color-coding and easy-to-use commands, it's truly the greatest text editor I've ever used.

Vim got the highest learning curve of all editors.

Agreed.

Sublime 2 has some amazing features, giving it a try atm... Usually using nano

Nano is what real programmers use, faggot. It's far more intuitive, fast, and easy to use.

Only problem I have with vim is that everyone says Emacs+Slime is GOAT for lisp but I refuse to use emacs. I can never get Slimv on vim to work right.

Use evil mode or spacemacs or something

Alternatively run vim in emacs.
>>
>>52130235
Steepest, not highest. It's difficult to use it for the first day or two, but if you so a tutorial or two and learn the basics it's really easy to get stuff done in it. I would say Emacs has the highest learning curve - it's easy to get started with but there's a lot more to learn if you want to be a good user of it.

Emacs will and always has been the superior option. It even has a modal mode for you weirdos.

If I've already gone through the vimtutor, should I go through (all 45 chapters of) the User Manual, too?

I feel like there's so much I don't know about Vim, and even though I'm doing some things more efficiently, I still feel like a supreme scrub.

At least we have commands to run, unlike nano which has what, cut and paste? When you can base64 encode an entire file with ggVGg? you let me know

Not your homosexual little Windows gui shitware
>>
>>52130794
>I would say Emacs has the highest learning curve
Yeah but Emacs is also more of an environment than a text editor, what you're saying is like saying a desktop OS has a higher learning curve than the firmware on a dollar store calculator. Of course it does, it also does a lot more.
>>
>>52134685
Emacs is a great system, only lacking a good editor.
>>
>>52134709
That joke would be funny if it didn't come with a good editor
>>
I would say kate.
It has keybinds which is familiar (vi or typical gui hotkeys)
Has a lot of features and most of them is enabled by default so no setup required.
The default layout is a bit weird but can easily be changed.
If you use graphical hotkeys, you can easily change / view hotkeys and you can search for hotkeys in the settings.
Search and replace has different modes, so you can use what is easiest for you.
I guess that with enough tinkering, you can make vim as good as kate, but kate is just more comfy.

What does Vim offer that makes it better than Nano? Is it more suited for certain types of work?

Not bait. Genuinely interested as I'm planning on learning it if it is better.

more features
But if you can use vi, that is smaller, installed on almost all systems and works well.

Can you guys shill me on the benefits of using vim or emacs over a"normal" editor (stuff like notepad or atom)? I'd like to start using them more, but I haven't read enough shillposts about them yet

To everyone, who struggles with using Vim. Try typing "vim help" in DDG and you'll be presented win an awesome cheat sheet that covers most of the basics. Thanks to that and a vim-based browser like Qutebrowser I went from being completely helpless in vim to being able to edit files without randomly deleting everything.

How long did you take to just try and edit/create stuff with it? In like two weeks I had most of it pretty well, everytime you have to do something that feels stupid look up what the non stupid way is

It doesn't take too long to become "good enough" at it. Truly mastering it takes a while, and basically needs you to make vim your hobby for a few months.

>Do you use any kind of autocomplete or you remember all functions possible parametrs etc?
There's a pretty great autocomplete plugin called YouCompleteMe, and it works really well out of the box. You can fiddle with the settings to make it even better if you want, but I've never bothered much with that. My main complaint is that it's written in C, so you have to compile it yourself, but that was only a big deal when I just started programming and wasn't used to compiling things from source code.
