I fell for the moar gigglehurtz thing when 11 year old me convinced my dad to buy me a 1.7ghz willamette P4 at PC world. I remember my dad wanting to get me the cheaper computer next to it with a 1.4ghz AMD chip, probably a thunderbird. I said the P4 was 1.7ghz and had an extra 300mhz, I told him the extra 300mhz would be like having an extra pc strapped onto it since our old pc was a pentium II 300mhz.
I redeemed myself with the purchase of an A64 3200+ in 2003 though! Shame it was socket 754 but hey ho, it was still good.
