How do you choose a laptop??

Indecisive guy here! (and not a pc expert)

I want to get a laptop and I was hoping /g/ could help. First of all, my budget is around 800€. I'm looking for a laptop that can handle 3D design programs (SolidWorks at least), computational analysis (Ansys and OpenFOAM) and some ocasional gaming (Dota,PoE,...).

My brother has an Asus k55 with an i7, 8GB RAM and a GeForce 610M. It works quite well, but I have some concerns about it. It's poorly built, with soft plastic all around that makes it feel very fragile, yet it is very heavy and awkwardly bulky. Can you recommend a laptop with similar specs (or better maybe?) but that feels more solid and well-rounded?

btw the laptop on the image is an Asus GL552, which has nice specs but has the same problems of quality

Thanks guys!

Laptops are shit. No matter what you get you're buying a disposable and proprietary machine. If you ever have a problem, you'll be lucky to get a repair/RMA completed within two weeks (of not having your system).

You probably won't get any BIOS updates after the first year, and it's very likely that some major bugs in the firmware will never be fixed - so you have to hope your OS of choice has developers willing to work around them just for your model of laptop.

Beyond that, do you really want to work on a shitty bendy chiclet keyboard with a terrible touchpad and a tiny 13-17" monitor?

1. Set a budget. "I will spend no more than ___ for my laptop.
2. Open Sunday newspaper ads.
3. Is the laptop advertised under the price established in step 1? Buy that one.

Go to Newegg, Amazon, etc. and start adding filters until you find something you like. Then buy that one wherever it's cheaper.

I'll say it once
HP omen
Mine cost 1600€ but you can get it for cheaper in US
Only the 860m version is available here, but it still runs games smoothly.
Lol: 200 fps
CS go: 200 fps
I got the 16GB version, its a blast to run
>1 virtual machine
>2 adobe program
>3 chrome tabs
All at the same time.

If it works then it doesn't need any further updates. The BIOS is just there to initialise the hardware and then passes any further responsibilities to the OS.
>some major bugs in the firmware
This sounds very pessimistic. Got any examples of this that aren't anecdotes? Your great aunt's second cousin telling you about one doesn't really count.

look into lenovo y70-70 series. It is solid laptop. Has spdif, 17" screen, 300cm brightness across all sectors. touchscreen, kinda usless but also great in travel like a bus or train. and packs either i5 or i7 with either gtx 860/960. I have i7-4710hq and 860m and works great.
But you have to get rid of superfish or some other shit lenvovo installs on it

check out this salty gamertard who paid bottom dollar for some pieces of shit at walmart and is really surprised when his ham planet hands break it

I've got 100% functional laptops that are probably older than you are.

Oh then I guess hardware standards like ATX/uATX/Mini ITX, socketable CPUs, and upgrade slots are worthless? If you buy a laptop you are absolutely buying into an OEM ecosystem and it's far less flexible and less upgradeable than the desktop world.

1. Pick 900M video card or more, like a 950M
2. Read reviews about the keyboard and trackpad
