Hello, /g/. Is it worth installing a 64bit system in a machine with only 2GB of ram? If it is not, what would happen if I did it? Would everything remain the same or would it run slower due to the higher processing power on only 2GB ram?
>>
No, even 32-bit runs like ass on 2GB of RAM

>high processing power on 2gb

First of fuck you, and nothing will happen just use the recommended hardware as the OS needs. If the OS needs more than 2GB during install it will tell you and most likely not install. Also get youtube some videos on computers.

x64 isn't just RAM, it's more registers, instructions and less carry-adding.
Always get x64 over x32, it's always a performance boost.

If you have 64bit support you should use it. 32bit OSes are usually lacking a few instruction set extensions for compatibility reasons plus 64bit registers help with some calculations. ASLR is more effective on 64bit

64
but seriously Tyrone, 2GB ? ram is cheap nowadays...
>>
64bit is fine on such a system. Memory consumption will probably be slightly less, but this will be only true to a certain extent. The performance improvements and improved instruction set outweigh such possible negatives.
>>
not just performance but security is improved on 64 bit, well at least on the x86_64 platform.
On a side related note, 64 bit arm doesn't have those types of improvements does it?

Yes. There's literally no reason to install a 32-bit OS.

xer facebook will run fine

Some programs might run faster but in general you'll be always swapping so the general usability will be lower.
>>
It is going to run slower (barely) if you install 64-bit version. Running in 32-bit mode does take cycles. You would be delusional to say you notice a difference.

Otherwise there is compatibility. Nothing you should run into, but there are edge cases. Running Steam in wine64 seems to lower stability for example, but you wouldn't be able to do that with 2GB ram anyways.

32 bit will use less ram, and that ought to be your main concern

Steam is 32 bit.
