you really shouldn't use two package managers interchangeably. You'd probably just have a bunch of duplicates if you did that (if you don't mind a messy system). You need to install windowmaker with debug symbols enabled and no optimization (and also run urxvt in daemon mode and invoke new terms with urxvtc)

I've fixed both of my color scripts and added options to specify how many colors you want to print. (8 or 16).

Next step is squashing all of the functions into one and using args to print the specified amount of colors.

that's interesting, I've never really even taken that into account. Despite the aggressive overtones, I really do stand by the fact that most people are using homebrew for the hip node.js/web stuff. they (in general) have no interest in hardcore unix hacking, and just want whatever hip program is making the rounds on hacker news that day. that's the beauty of pkgsrc. It has the most up to date programs, quarter control system (along with a trunk branch from joyent, if needed), and dead simple install locations (everything is contained in a SINGLE FOLDER: /opt/pkg). That last part is probably my favorite, as I feel like once I install homebrew or macports I'm locked in forever due to all the cruft it leaves on the system. see http://web.archive.org/web/20140412024445/http://saveosx.org/uninstall-package-managers/ for further reading.
>>52072500
retro aesthetics have no effect on the productivity/workflow of my system. terminal-based text editing is stupid (and has been since the mid 1980's, when plan9 was first created thus deprecating it).

Yeah but who cares? Being a hardcore Unix hacker isn't a requirement for using a package manager. It's hip to use, sure, but even against your (valid) criticisms I think it does an alright job at what it sets out to accomplish.

I might try out pkgsrc if I ever did a clean OS X install but the nuances among the package managers are pretty inconsequential to me.

i was testing out my conversion of the System 0.85 version of the Chicago font that I hacked into a modern datafork to see if emacs would handle the spacing correctly (there is a bug in Cocoa/CoreGraphics with bitmap font metrics) but I kept it because it was really easy on the eyes for long sessions. Also really cool that emacs handles italics itself, even if there are not italic metrics in the datafork itself.

I'm still probably gonna mess around with some other stuff, but it will probably always be an aliased bitmap (subpixel/AA hurts my eyes). most likely profont or monaco or something.
>>52072642
>Yeah but who cares? Being a hardcore Unix hacker isn't a requirement for using a package manager.
yeah that's true. but I'm on a philosophical mission to get rid of things that I find bad and replace them with better solutions
>I think it does an alright job at what it sets out to accomplish.
yeah my father always reinforced that if you're gonna do something, do it right or don't do it at all. I don't find their solution to be doing it right so I don't think they should do it at all.
>>52072632

Crypto backdoors are harmful to society. Security through obscurity is never the answer when it comes to cryptography. Don't allow the NSA or other government agencies to implement another Clipper chip or Dual_EC_DRBG.

This attack was then actually implemented and popularized by Ken Thompson in Thompson (1984), in his Turing Award acceptance speech in 1983 (published 1984), "Reflections on Trusting Trust", which points out that trust is relative, and the only software one can truly trust is code where every step of the bootstrapping has been inspected. This backdoor mechanism is based on the fact that people only review source (human-written) code, and not compiled machine code (object code). A program called a compiler is used to create the second from the first, and the compiler is usually trusted to do an honest job.

Thompson's paper describes a modified version of the Unix C compiler that would:

Put an invisible backdoor in the Unix login command when it noticed that the login program was being compiled, and as a twist
Also add this feature undetectably to future compiler versions upon their compilation as well.

Because the compiler itself was a compiled program, users would be extremely unlikely to notice the machine code instructions that performed these tasks. (Because of the second task, the compiler's source code would appear "clean".) What's worse, in Thompson's proof of concept implementation, the subverted compiler also subverted the analysis program (the disassembler), so that anyone who examined the binaries in the usual way would not actually see the real code that was running, but something else instead.

>>
>>52074434
>>52074461
That may be so, but that's never an excuse to just shrug and move on. They're deliberately weaken security, rendering everyone vulnerable to the backdoor. Whoever knows how to exploit the backdoor is able to crack it. Cryptography isn't able to distinguish between the government or a criminal, it's just mathematics.

Yes, that's the only thing you can do in this stupid democracy. And just pray morons like Hillary and Donald will never make it.
>I can do nothing because I'm not good with code.
You shouldn't write your own crypto. There are way too many pitfalls and it's best left to the best cryptographers. As a rule of thumb, always avoid cryptography which isn't open source. Security through obscurity is *not* how you do cryptography. Like Kerckhoffs said, everything about the system should be publicly known in order to validate the security. In other words, only open source makes independent research and code audits possible.

So /home/username/.Xdefaults

You can use the command "touch ~/.Xdefaults" to create it.
