Intended for users of all levels, including absolute beginners.

There are three ways to try Linux, you can:

1) Install a Linux OS on a VM (Virtual Machine/VirtualBox) for "safety purposes"
2) Use the Live ISO directly without installing anything, that way, you can get a "full Linux experience".
3) Go balls deep and overwrite everything with Linux (not recommended)

If you are serious about switching to Linux and if you have Windows dual-booted (recommended for pure newbies),
we recommend you use it exclusively for 2 weeks, and avoid Windows dual booting for that period of time, or it's
likely you will start retreating back to windows instead of getting used to GNU/Linux as your new home and working on
making it feel the way you want it.

>Recommended for beginners:
-Ubuntu MATE
-Debian (For Broadcom devices, use an ISO that includes non-free firmware)
-openSUSE
-LinuxMint /(Ubuntu LTS + Cinnamon)

I've finished backing up my files (video/photos/porn etc) and want to install openSUSE on my pc, I'm just wondering if I will have any trouble with permissions when viewing/accessing my files on openSUSE?

And the file system of an external I have is NTFS? Would that be an issue?

>>
>>52055648
The reason I ask about permissions is because my desktop HDD failed and after getting an enclosure for it I had some trouble deleting files/transferring.

Ok, then. Cannot wait to uninstall 8.1

One last questions. I have a few torrents that I will need to continue seeding, should I have any problem having the files checked by a different torrent program in openSUSE?

I have this really barebones pc here that I'd like to tryout linux with.
>Core 2 Duo
>4GB DDR2

>120 GB old as fuck Seagate Barracuda

Earlier on, in another thread, an anon suggested xubuntu, if I wanted to get that what are the majority of the packages that I'd need to get for it and chuck on a usb hard drive before it could work.
Thanks for your help /g/
>>
>>52057996
For Wayland or Vulkan?

Wayland sounds like a cool thing but it doesn't matter much to me if it dips, since X still works just fine. I'm much more interested in Vulkan
>>
>>52057510
Wayland is an upgrade over X at least. Not really that huge of an upgrade for the end users the main benefit we regular people will see is fewer graphical problems and somewhat improved security. Developers will find wayland easier to use and integrate into their projects.

Vulkan only affects GCN and recent Nvidia hardware but it can improve their efficiency somewhat.

You should never ever use a 32-bit system if your hardware supports 64-bit systems
>>
>>52058654
I have no idea if this will support 64-bit, I just bought this vista for 20 bucks from a thrift shop.

Friend is recommending "mint", thoughts?
>>
>>52058557
64bit is somewhat faster, it gives you 64bit registers which helps with some calculations. 64bit makes ASLR more effective, the virtual address space is fuckhuge on 64bit which makes buffer overflows a lot harder to actually pull off when ASLR is enabled. 64bit uses slightly more hard disk space though and maybe memory as well.
>>
>>52058742
Core 2 Duos are 64bit.
>>
>>52058742
How familiar are you with GNU/Linux?
If not much, mint/*ubuntu is just fine. But ultimately most users move to Arch for a valid reason - Well structured wiki and large software repository
>>

Absolutely not familiar at all, I just want to try it because I'm sick of the problems that windows has.

>>

Haha welcome to /flt/
Since you are using linux for your desktop, here are my thoughts.
For desktops there are two kinds:
1. User centric: (Experienced users) : Arch
>Comes with close to nothing pre-instlled
>You have to install the things you need and that'll include "window, window themes, notepad, terminal, device drivers, browsers, Office suit, paint, media player" and so on.
>Very fast in terms of performance
2. Pre-built: (New users): Mint
>Comes with just about everything
>Easy to install
>Can be slow because there are some softwares that you may never end up using

I'd suggest you install Mint (Cinnamon); (4GB is the same as me, and I liked the performance). When you finally realize the advantages in using a terminal, move to Manjaro/Antergos and learn the difference between mint and the one you picked. At this point, you are pretty much an intermediate user. Then use Arch (or manjaro/antergos "base")

Good luck from Australia, anon

most web servers (apache2.4) are old and stable, I don't see any problem with it, except if you plan to use other services, it'll require a lot of maintenance to prevent down time, is not worth it, just go with centos.
sometimes you don't want that bleeding in "web" code. Is not cool for me use perl legacy and shit.

archbang is pure arch(gnu&linux) + openbox + netwerkmanagor + volume tray + geany + firefox

It boots live in less than 256MB RAM

There's not currently a BSD thread, with any significant number of posters in it, so I'll post it here.

Can I get League of Legends and steam running on OpenBSD, switch to FreeBSD, or am I just wasting my time with these obscure meme OS's and this isn't worth my while?

I want to use OpenBSD because muh security, but I'd be willing to move over to FreeBSD, which I hear is somewhat more secure than Linux, and supposedly runs better running Linux binaries than Linux does.

>>
>>52063137
Wait, since you have PulseAudio, shouldn't it be ALSA <- PulseAudio <- Apps&Games?

Try to install pavucontrol and see if you can control per-app settings there.
>>
>>52063188
This is how the output from
fuser-v /dev/snd*
looks like when a program uses pulse:
                     USER PID ACCESS COMMAND
/dev/snd/controlC0: bus 1183 F.... pulseaudio
/dev/snd/controlC1: bus 1183 F.... pulseaudio
/dev/snd/pcmC0D0p: bus 1183 F...m pulseaudio

And this is how it looks when it goes straight to ALSA for some reason:
                     USER PID ACCESS COMMAND
/dev/snd/controlC0: bus 1183 F.... pulseaudio
/dev/snd/controlC1: bus 1183 F.... pulseaudio
/dev/snd/pcmC0D0p: bus 12412 F...m Cities.x641

So it doesn't seem to follow your little diagram.

Pavucontrol segfaults right when I launch it. Hilarious.

Do I really need to explain this sentence?
Some other examples: Factorio, Grow Home, Prison Architect, and many more.
>>
>>52063421
Then either Steam, the games, or PulseAudio is the issue. Weird, since it works here.
>>
>>52063451
Post your alsa/pulse configs then. I tried several different configs I found online, both with and without dmix. It was still broken.
>>
>>52063480

>>

>>
>>52063613

>>
>>52063560
I think I found the issue. When I start Grow Home via Steam, it goes to ALSA.
But when I start directly Grow Home's executable, it goes to pulse and I have no issues with audio.
At least now I have something to blame. No idea how to fix it, though.
>>
>>52063613
Set hinting to full and use another font. Dejavu sans is good for system and inconsolata for terminal
