I didn't see one so Speaker Thread.

Seeing as it's the season to spend money on new stuff, I'd like to finally get some notshit speakers to replace my shit computer speakers.

I'm currently looking at the Micca MB42X speakers paired with a Lepai LP-2020A+ amplifier. My budget is flexible, but I'd like to keep it around $100 or so.

Good idea yes/no?
>>
Why would you pay for shit in your ears? Dream big, OP

What is the connection between your PC and the Lepai amp? Do you have a DAC?

Pic Related, my MB42X setup
>>
I'm getting the ELAC B6's soon. What should I go for for a good amp/dac for them?
>>
>>52025053
I do not; I'm completely new to speakers that aren't shitty powered computer speakers. I haven't bought the amp yet. I was under the impression the amp could be plugged directly into the computer. Is a DAC necessary, and if so, got any recommendations?
>>
>>52025245
>Is a DAC necessary
Not unless your onboard is noticeably noisy/distorted.
>>
>>52025282
this

>>52025245
spend an extra 20 or 30 bucks and get a quality second hand receiver/stereo/amp, gives you something to grow into. the lepai is shit tier.

i do enjoy speaker threads on /g/

Friendly reminder that JBL LSR305 is the go-to power monitor for everything <$1000.

in the nearfield....c'mon. those tweeters are probably better off axis

No, you're just getting muddy and boomy midbass.

>in the nearfield....c'mon. those tweeters are probably better off axis
You should probably refrain from trying to act like you know anything. Just saying.
>>
>>52025520
that's not me replying, just saying

They are toed in though, the camera is just a little deceptive
>>
>>52025532
2 degrees of toe-in won't do anything.

you are completely right, i am completely wrong, i'm so sorry. i never meant for you to just say.

>>52025053
move your speaker 8' out from the wall and put a BSC circuit on there that compensates for them being near the wall, that will sort out that muddy mid-bass brah. also you need an equilateral triangle and about 500 traps for early reflections from your 80db average listening volume.

fuckin kek

Decent speakers to listen to music and stuff at a PC? My dad is looking for a pair. thinking no more than 100 dollarydoos or so. Don't need anything fancy.
>>
>>52025424
That's overselling those. Under $500 sure, above that a lot of options open up. HS8, for example
>>
>>52025693
HS8 are at best close to the LSR308 in performance but they still lack the directivity. The only things that really outperform the LSR305/308 are Genelecs/Neumanns at the cheapest.
>>
>>52025609
I don't know what that means:(

I assembled my own speakers using a proven design. Store bought, name brand speakers take the fun and quality out the whole thing. You also save a bunch of money. Maybe I'll build a guide for you anons one day.
>>
>>52025770
Or you could build kits with better designs than that dated garbage.
>>
>>52025770
there are quite a few gems out there as far as commercially designed speakers. it's refreshing to see actual mid to budget level designs coming out of the big boys these days going past drivers in a box.

>>52025803
>kits
if it's built off a proven design, how is it dated garbage? because it didnt come out of a flat pack because he might actually own a saw of his own?
fit and finish is as good if not better than a commercial speaker in the budget category
>>
>>52025886
You keep spouting 'proven design' like it means anything other than cheap manufacturing.
>>
>>52025908
isn't the goal of all manufacturing to be cheap?
>>
>>52025982
the goal of a lot of manufacturing is to be efficient and precise, not cheap
>>
>>52025982
Building a basic bitch 2-way with a crossover is the most uninspired shit you could possibly do.

Something like this would be much more fulfilling to not only make, but listen to afterward.
https://www.madisoundspeakerstore.com/full-range-speaker-kits/fostex-bk-12m-folded-horn-kit-pair/

Hell even a waveguide kit like a Fusion 8 from DIY Sound Group would be better and more fun.

Suggestions on good amps in the $30 - $50 range?

tfw only paid like $30 for this setup minus the Fiio.
also these shitty Sony speakers from walmart sound better than my boyfriend's Polk audio shits.
>>
>>52026007
efficiency is due to costs, and about every company that measures profits in pieces out the door will make a concession in parts r manufacture that ultimately comes to doing it on the cheap.

>>52026010
a rear loaded horn isnt without its own issues. substituting 1/4 wave nonsense for electrical engineering nonsense doesnt make a project more or less fulfilling, its just a substitution of challenges...ie achieving flattest possible freq response with as few as parts as possible vs extending the range of a speaker with as big a box as possible.

however none of this is relating to the OP.

I'm using the classix ii by Paul Carmody. Someone mentioned diysoundgroup up above and they happen to sell that kit. I'm reasonably happy about the sound for the price I paid.
>>
>>52025693
i'm gonna jump into this thread and agree that LSR305/8 and behringer 2030A truth are the go-to <$1000 monitors.

directivity is not a gimmick, it's a practical requirement for sub-2000sq/ft rooms.

>>52025886
it's dated in the same way nearly all dome-on-a-box designs are dated: it's designed around the (unspoken) assumption that only one listener is ever present, who is seated in The Listening Position, in a room that's been extensively treated to a near-antisocial (or professional) degree.

in other words, a design that handwaves the major problems of speaker-room interaction away, assuming that someone or something else will solve them instead, all without explicitly informing the user of this.

this is a very antiquated design approach.

again, directivity is not a gimmick.

Are Mini Components in the same tier as PC speakers?
I've had absolute shit luck when buying amplifiers from Amazon, and my only other options are Receivers (most of which are more expensive than what I'm willing to pay) and Mini Components.

I just want something that will make movies and videogames sound loud and relatively clear.
