The 4gb version scores 2% higher than the 2gb version in tests, so no.

In terms of raw performance, the 980 is better, though for 60 or so dollars cheaper, I'd get the 390X instead.

You should look up some comparisons, the 390 scores higher in a lot of games.

gonna use this thread to ask a question

>>
>>51992048
290x, shouldn't even ask this desu.
>>
>>51992048

Save up 60 more dollars and get the MSI R9 390. Or, spend 20 bucks more to get the Powercolor PCS+.
>>
>>51992064
there's a guy selling a 390 PCS+ BNIB for $350 CAD, kinda thinking about that

>>51992059
I'm playing at 1080p. is the extra power worth it
>>
>>51992077

You live in Canada? I feel bad for you, you get cucked badly on those prices.
>>
>>51992077
Extra power is always worth it if you can afford it and are planning on using it for a long time (2+ years).
>>
>>51992103
yeah, but to be fair, our dollar is complete shit, so a $220 290 would be $158 USD, which is a pretty great deal, so who's the real cuck?

>>51992119
maybe I'll try to get the 290x for $250. the 390 is out of my price range and it seems to stay around the 290x in a lot of benchmarks anyway
>>
>>51992129
The 390 is supposedly a 290x rebrand, so that's to be expected.

>>
Awww man OP you're so smart, 8 is bigger than 3.5 so that means it's over twice as good! Right on bro! Hurry and tell Reddit what a great buy you made!
>>
>>51992156
It's only worth buying the 390s over 290s if you can't find a 290 at a decent price or you don't plan on crossfiring them so that you can actually use the 8GB of VRAM. Problem is they aren't making any more 290(X)s so prices are going up on the good models like the Vapor-X
>>
>>51991707
I got a 970 and I am pretty happy with it. System only draws about 330 watts gaming and about 230 working.

Kinda tempted to trade it in for a 980ti for $300 but with new cards coming next year it's hard to justify that.
>>
>>51992162
>Sapphire or Powercolor
lughingwenches.png
>>
>>51992223
my understanding is that for 1080p, go with a 290/290x/970, but for 1440p, get a 390/390x/980

since I'm staying at 1080p, a 290x seems to be the best card for me from a price:performance standpoint

>>
>>51992250
Like I said if you can find one of the decent 290s (read not reference) then by all means. The 8 GB and slightly higher base clock isn't worth paying more if you won't use it.
>>51992240
>I don't actually have any points
I'll admit they're long as fuck cards, but they're objectively the best ones for cooling and noise. The MSI can clock a bit better, but the different you'll actually see is negligible.
>>
>>51992290
>one product is better than another in certain areas and applications
>needs professional help
Uhm no. What others choose to spend their money on is their prerogative. $50 is chump change. The 390x is not objectively 100% better than the GTX 980.
>>
>>51991722
Am I crazy, or is the only difference between a 390 and a 390x a 50mhz clock boost?
>>
>>51992477
You're crazy. The 390x has 2,816 vs the 390's 2,560.
>>
>>51992477

Can I run two 390s on a 750W PSU? My CPU is not overclocked
>>
>>51992645
Use pcpartpicker to check, but generally speaking no. You're going to need at least an 850w or play it safe a 1000w.
>>
>>51992645
As this anon said >>51992665 you're looking anywhere from 850W up but you're gonna wanna go with at least a 1600W just in case you plug in an extra hard drive.

390 requires 700w PSU so you'll need 1,400W, then you can finally play Witcher and GTAV 120fps at 4k
>>
>>51992645

I'd do a 1000w for safety. I mean generally you want your max power draw to be less than 80% of you PSU rating.
>>
>>51992645
You're going to want to install a small thermonuclear power plant in your home to power them both.
>>
>>51992645
I agree that 390 is good but running them in xfire is literally asking for a house fire.
Just get a 980ti m8

It releases almost TWICE the heat inside the case, even though it only uses about 60w of energy. This is a concern for people living in hot areas and/or with cases with some limitations, like most itx builds.

And no matter what, nvidia is always a much more hassle-free experience, specially since the vast majority of games are sponsored by them instead of amd's gaming evolved stuff. It's like clockwork, whenever a new game comes out, you'll always - ALWAYS - see a bunch of people running into X/Y/Z problems and it's always an amdfag. Nvidia releases drivers a day before the games come out, while amd takes many weeks to months to do the same.

Also when I switched from the 6850 to a gtx 760, what I first noticed was that there are way more hotfixes for nvidia for game-specific problems available online than there is for amd by a large margin.

PC gaming already has its share of bullshit unexplicable problems and erros every so often, so I'd like to keep that to a minimum. But I would have bought this card were it cheaper than the 970 where I live, but at the time I found a g1 gaming 970 about 20 dollars cheaper than the msi gaming 390 AND it came with free phantom pain bundled in, which I had an interest for, so that was an additional glorified 60 dollars rebate. Could never say no to that. My build is also itx and I live in the sun, so, yeah.
>>
>>51991707
Good card, should have gone powercolor or sapphire though.
>>
>>51994652

I've been an AMDfag for a decade but I decided to go with the 970 this black friday, it performs great and it fits nicely in a mid tower. I don't plan on going past 1080p for a very long time, the power consumption is great, my room isn't hot as satan's nutsack when I leave my computer on for a few hours anymore either. If the price for an msi r9 390 was exactly the same as the 970 I got I'd still pick the 390 though.

the 390 doesn't compete with the 970 performance wise, only the 390x does.

the 970 is possible the greatest value GPU ever made, at least relative to what AMD offers in it's place. you can find one for the price of a 380x and get the performance of a 390x.
>>
Why is there no 960ti

the regular 960 is too shitty and the 970 is too expensive and memey, so I'm getting a 380X
>>
>>51995091

AMD fucked up, though. right now the 390 and 390x both sit higher up in price than the 970. they should've made the 390 $300 and 390x $375 so there'd be no reason to get a 970 other than brand loyalty

Any actual owners of 390 that can give their thoughts on the card?

I'm considering getting the Sapphire NITRO aftermarket version, and i will be playing in 1080, primarily ARMA 3 and hopefully Star Citizen if it ever comes out of alpha.

Also, what are the implications of using a 144Hz monitor? will i need to limit fps and/or lock the refreshrate to prevent housefires or other technical problems?

And how much of a meme will Vulkan be?
pic unrelated
>>
>>51998767
390 cards run fairly hot. Around 45c idle. That being said the Sapphire version is the best one you can get. Depending on the game/graphic settings you should be able to use your 144hz monitor. I doubt you'll need to cap your FPS though.

For differences about the cards see: http://www.overclock.net/t/1561704/official-amd-r9-390-390x-owners-club

I wouldn't say it's superior in every way, there are a fair few games that the 970 beats it slightly. However, I would still get the 390 over the 970 for the extra VRAM (and not wanting to support nvidia's business practices)
