>abloo bloo bloo muh horology muh microengineering *tips*

Glad you brought back the ridiculous OP text, 9gag. I hope you know that microengineering is a made up word and micromachines are so small that they're measured in microns, a watch is not a micromachine at all. And yes I know that Grand Seiko is using MEMS machining now, that still doesn't make it a micromachine.

Pic related is actual MEMS, if you were curious.
>>
>>51989578
At least every tuning fork movement is, with gear teeth 10 micrometers high.
>>
>>51989670
That's impressive as hell especially considering they did that in the 60s somehow, but unless you show me an entire watch movement less than 1mm across it's not technically a micromachine. Actually that would be a pretty neat challenge, to make a watch so small you need a microscope to tell the time. It would finally be a watch all you bitchwrists could wear without overhanging lugs.

Most of us have the $16 one from amazon. And if your watches are so fucking good maybe you should have posted one instead of a completely irrelevant image.

It's made of wood, very solid actually. Who gives a fuck though? In the end it's only a place to rest your watches while you aren't wearing them.

It looks and works perfectly fine, it's not cardboard. How much money do you think you're supposed to pay for a fucking wooden box? I've thought about keeping all the pillows but remaking the box myself out of some nice fancy wood, but I would never pay out the ass for a nice watch box.

Landmaster is the cheapest spring drive that I'm aware of, it's a bit under $2500. Spring drive Tuna is about $2500-2800, GS spring drives start around 4 grand probably, the snowfrake seems to have dropped in price to around $5500 probably because the yen is so damn cheap now.
>>
>>51989367
What kind of materials engineering is actually required to make a good watch?
>>
>>51991326
Is the landmaster as chunky as it looks?
>>
>>51991373
Spring alloys are a big one, lume is another area under constant development.
>>

Also ceramics, anti-reflective coatings, stuff like diashield, the list goes on.

>>
>>51991688
Take it to an AD, you can always sell it for a pretty penny if real and you don't want to pay for service costs. The amount of value it could lose if you fuck something up by opening it yourself should be enough reason to be careful with it until you know it's a fake.

It's a big thick bitch, 45mm wide by 14mm thick. Diashield titanium though, so it's light. It's basically the Earth version of the Spring Drive Spacewalk, hence the water resistance is only 100m but it's supposed to function perfectly between 50 C and -40 C. Temperature stability is supposed to be a big advantage of springdrive movements.

>>51991510
Antimagnetic movements also require lots of parts made out of different nonmagnetic materials, like Omega's silicon balance spring. Also titanium isn't really a big deal anymore but I think watches were one of the first industries to really figure out how to machine it and put it to use in consumer products at reasonable prices. In fact you can thank Japan for titanium becoming a meme material, Seiko and Nikon were both pioneers in the use of the metal.
>>
I was wondering if I could get some help from you guys in /wt/.

I'm new to the watch world, and I'm looking into purchasing a decent entry level piece. Simply from lurking, I've established that I would prefer an automatic timepiece. Where I'm faltering, however, is brand.

I've determined Seiko and Vostok as prime contenders, but are there any other brands I'm missing? I have a budget of $100 and I'm more than willing to swap out wrist straps. Any suggestions are appreciated.
>>
>>51991989
Orient has some good stuff around that price point.
>>
>>51991715

Alright thanks, so either way it'll cost me an arm and a leg, beautiful.
>>
>>51992101
It shouldn't cost you anything for them to just look at it. Either they tell you it's a fake and you can do whatever with it or they'll give you a quote for a service and you can decide to pay it or sell it and let someone else eat that cost.
>>
>>51991727
I used an Ecozilla in exactly that thermal environment (-40C to +55C) with no problems. It's not nearly as nice as what you posted, but you don't have to spend tons of money if you want a watch that will work in Alaska and in the hottest place on earth, all in the span of 24 hours.

I was in a gigantic climate chamber, btw

Yep, so it's working fine for now. I heard some bs about it moving on your wrist and losing time idk what to believe.
>>

Well it's an automatic, meaning there's a rotor that winds the movement by using your wrists movement. As for losing time, any given mechanical watch will gain or lose X number of seconds per day (depending on a number of factors).

They are designed by Seiko and made in Seiko plants by Seiko employees. Doesn't get more in house than that.

Most of them basically offer an exterior around a Miyota 9015. Some offer a good price for a good design, some don't. Obris Morgan, Aevig and Lew & Huey are some of the good-looking ones I can name.
>>
>>51996864
There's generally some interesting ideas that come up through them due to fresh minds and less market influence but quality and know-how is a worry.
>>
>>51996864
They're hit or miss. I like that they exist, because they can pretty much do what they want design-wise, and it's a good change from a world of boring, safe designs repeated everywhere by the same brands. I would not wear a stuckx the rock, but i'm happy it's out there.

There's a concern about long-term warranty and parts availability and all that, of course. If you want a watch that you will be sure to keep a very long time, service and all, then micro brands aren't adequate.
>>
>>51996914
They use very common movements though so parts availability is not going to be an issue and any watchmaker can service them. If you're fucking up the outside of your watch that's your problem.
>>
>>51996929
The question is not whose fault it is, dumbfuck.
>>
>>51996864
I think they're awesome even if the designs can be hit or miss. Affordable watches with decent movements for low prices and a freedom to design for niche markets.

I have one and it's really unnoticeable, people only notice on here because of macro shots.
It may be worth asking Tisell if they'll do a sterile version of the dial (logo only) because they do custom requests a fair bit.
Someone on WUS got them to do a blue bezel with a black dial for no extra cost, so changing the printing may not be a huge ask.

Can someone reccomend a good place to buy a Seiko Sarb033 ? Amazon won't ship to my country.

I know it's a bit boring but it seems like a watch that would go with anything.
>>
>>51998468
Yes they get a regular movement and pass it through the shrink ray in their secret lab
More seriously they're just small movements. Assembled by hand like most mechanical movements. They literally just use tiny tools and loupes to assemble them.
Do you have pictures of the actual watches? That sounds pretty cool.

Tiny tiny tiny movement here:

I'll be at my parents' place tomorrow again, I will take some pictures and post them here
One of these watches was a present by her grandfather when she was young, we found it again last weekend, she thought it wouldn't work anymore
how is it with using watches that old, they were in a box for quite some time now, is it safe to use them or should they be serviced theoretically?
sounds very interesting with movements that small t b h

I got an HMT Pilot some time ago on eBay for 8 bucks, it works and it is on a pretty good aesthetic condition but it has a really low power reserve.

On a scale of 1-10 how hard would be fixing this for someone who has no fucking idea of how a watch works?

Keep in mind I'm probably doing it anyway so tips are welcome.

If the problem really is the power reserve you could get another HMT with the same movement and swap out the whole mainspring barrel.
>>
>>51999252
Well, this one seems alright. Condition is meh since the hands are incorrect, but i think it's best since the original ones had some radioactive lume material in them. Dial seems a little off but for the price you want it to be it's really a stupid idea. 220~ should be a minimum and they are mostly a collectors piece.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/1937-Vintage-SOVIET-MILITARY-COMMANDER-1MCHZ-KIROVSKIE-watch/172030381698?_trksid=p2047675.c100005.m1851&_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIC.MBE%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D34494%26meid%3De15ae7bb860144dbbc57f43b29905449%26pid%3D100005%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D6%26sd%3D172030374494

There are many other things that are unsettling here, like the very weird dial color, but i think we'll need one of the WUS specialists to tell us.

Or for that matter any Swiss watch you can get for $2000 or less that isn't a pleb catcher sold in mall jewelry stores?
