Is there anyone here who doesn't know how to code? Why haven't you learned?
>>
>>51979677
Because im not a fucking nerd.
>>
I only know Python, Visual Basic and some C++ but I'm dropping CS.
As much as I love the idea of programming, I'm not good at math, I'll just switch majors to something like accounting and learn more programming on my free time.
>>
I lost interest. Not worth pursuing something you don't care about anymore.
>>
>>51979677
I'm currently learning 6502 assembly. Yeah, I could learn x86, but 6502 sounds more fun right now because the NES was 6502.
>>
Is there anyone here who doesn't know how to put a toilet together? Why haven't you learned?

>>51979677
I was scared of failing. Now I'm learning python, I just bought a thinkpad t420 and I'm installing xubuntu on it this week. I may never be 1337 but I can be okay, and that's good enough for me.
>>
Me. I use Arch. Have been on GNU/Linux for years. Coding always seemed like a pipedream. I've started some codecademy courses and downloaded some books but I've never finished anything. I really want to learn. I even edit text in vim already and know a lot of people who program. I'd benefit greatly from learning but I procrastinate a lot. I also worry that what I've learned hasn't stuck so continuing where I left off might not go well. I get caught up in these mind games. I think I'm scared of finding out I can't learn it. That probably sounds ridiculous to people who have learned, but it's just short of magic to me to be able to program. I'm a NEET so I even have the time to learn.

What do..?
>>
>>51979677
I don't care enough about it.

Well being a meet you cant, being a parasitic loser makes you effort averse.>>51979677

Anyone? More like, most of /g/.
Neo-/g/ is filled to the brim with /v/irgins fanboying it up for their preferred phone manufacturer. I don't know if it's because of them experiencing buyers remorse or if they just want to go back to their school days when they were having intense school yard debates on Nintendo vs. Sega.
Anyway, these people don't care about technology at all. The most they can come up with is changing a few colors from an existing gist of a dotfile, then asking where to put it.
>>
>>51979800
Ehh, you'd be surprised how incompetent most of the self-proclaimed geniuses on here are. I'm sure you're doing fine. Try to come up with an idea to develop that is really useful or interesting to you and it will be fun to come back to programming every day.
>>
>>51979800
Why were you scared of failing if you don't mind me asking? Python's a great place to start too!
>>
I used to know how to code. then I fucked up my life and dropped out, and I haven't written anything more than a short bash script for two or three years.
>>
>tfw too dumb to code
>>
>>51979942
No you're not! Start with Python, JavaScript, or Java and take it slow. Anyone can do it!
>>
>>51979977
What kind of things could someone make with a years worth of Python?
>>
>>51979677
because the shit is so saturated even indians can code for dirt cheap. even if i knew how to code what can i make that hasn't already been made over and over again.

>>51979986
nothing without using frameworks
>>
>>51979896

To start with I have a few gaming related projects in mind however I'm not sure if python is going to be a compatible language, or what I'll need to learn in that regard. I'll investigate further.

>>51979902
I was scared of not meeting my expectations because i'm hyper-critical of myself. I also reasoned that I would enjoy myself playing games more than I would trying to debug some script for 3 hours straight because I forgot a semicolon. Coding, like any other useful hobby of progression that I could have undertook was relegated to a lower priority to hedonistic pursuit of computer games and drugs.

I did have fun times being a loser though.
>>
>>51979813
I found that I needed to get really invested and interested in a project to make it fun so I'd come back to it all the time. Look around your household and see if there is something that can be optimized or fixed. Look at what you do every day and things you repeat a lot, see if you can come up with a way to automate the processes. Otherwise, are there any really cool topics to you?

For example, you could write programs or scripts to automate mounting and connections on your computer, or automate downloading things. If you have enough disposable income, you can buy kits for Raspberry Pi, Intel Edison or Arduino and write code to do things around the house automatically like blinds, watering plants, lights, etc... You could spend some time learning Regular Expressions and text stream editors in Linux, you can do some crazy stuff with that if you're competent with it.
>>
I did start to learn C but I quickly found out that my brain wasn't ready.

http://www.learn-c.org/en/Linked_lists

I understand the concept but it's just too much work when you have to start to use pointers to pointers just to do simple operations on a linked list. I have started with C# and .NET and I think it will suit me better.
>>
>>51979986
You could make a text based adventure, some basic scripts that interact with the web or things on your computer, physics simulator, math programs, all sorts of things. And with pygame, you can do 2d graphics too.
>>
>>51980023
Fuck all the expectations man, isn't it better to know you're mediocre (or possibly good) at something than never know how good you could've been?
And in regards to the debugging scripts thing, sometimes it can be quite rewarding to solve problems in your code to make it run faster or even work!
>>
im learning java objects now but can only practice in the codecademy sandbox because every time i donwload a java compiler i dont know what the fuck to do with it and it never compiles
>>
>>51980312
i'm no expert in java, I used to copy paste scripts for runescape when I was younger but don't you actually need a library to compile from?
>>
>>51980312
I could help you out with that. There are some key steps you might be missing.
>>
>>51980312
I'm gonna be honest here, code with and IDE. I know its not /g/ but java is such a pain to code in without. The visual organization of the class hierarchy helps it make much more sense.
>>
>>51980045
I thought about this approach. I have interests in both the 3ds hacking scene as well as Minecraft modding. Was trying to decide between C and Java based on that. I think I'd also need to know ARM assembly for the 3ds stuff, though.
>>
>>51979837
I'm 18. Being a NEET isn't that weird. Still deciding what to do with my life.
>>
>>51979677
I try.

I want to program MCU and make robots and mecha.

Someday I will do it, in my free times after I get a job.
I just can't concentrate when something like getting job or prepare for exams remind me off my priorities.
>>
>>51979739
>not good at math

Addition is barely math
>>
>>51980023
If you're still around, Construct 2 is an excellent package for beginning in game development. Games are some of the most challenging programming projects, so a more simplified suite is nice for your first venture into it.
>>
>>51980603
Minecraft modding is very accessible, it would likely be a better choice for a first project.
>>
>>51981675
Shut up your wrong.

The best choice for a first project is any Bethesda game. You won't have to work with the 40 mod starter kits that never work like Minecraft has. You won't have to decompile the game to mod it, because its not needed.

OR JUST FUCKING GARYS MOD YOU PLEBS

the closest i've come to programming was doing some html in high school. i do want to get into programming but have no idea what to start with. ideally i'd like to learn something i could do to make a little extra money with to supplement my current income. what language should i start learning? C++?
>>
>>51979677
I can't find the motivation to read wall of text books, all of the good online video tutorials cost dosh like lynda.com, most YouTube guys have no idea what they're talking about or are shitty teachers, and I can't be arsed to go back to college
>>
I don't know where to start, I picked it up as tween got my first "Hello World" with the help of a book then after that I just kinda got lost. Tried going into a programming IRC for advice and was told to fuck off.

Went back to vidya.
>>
>>51981733
You can mod minecraft with a very basic understanding of programming, it's extremely accessible as long as you stick to more basic things.
>>
>>51979677
Because I plan to get a degree in business
>>
I'd like to at least learn enough to make some simple gui frontends for a few cli programs that I use occasionally. I don't mind using cli for a lot of things but it's a pain to have to re-read the man pages for some programs that I only use once a month or so because I forget the syntax/commands. Also, learning a bit of scripting to automate certain things would be useful from time to time.
>>
Below average experience in Java because of high-school class.

Problem is that I'm thinking about women too much which is seriously crashing my drive to program something or anything at all.

Now, I have a below average experience in programming because my main OS is Arch, which occasionally do something.

Latest programming "project" I did was make this pping and ppong (client & server respectfully) thing in Python.
>>
>>51983193
Damn, my post is fucking cancer.
>>

>Problem is that I'm thinking about women too much
what? why?
>>
>>51983271
It's a nice way of saying I'm a porn addict.
>>
Why the fuck should I?
>>
>>51983314
oh fuck, i've been there too
>>
>>51983586
How did you remedy the addiction or whatever?
>>
>>51983641
i kept reminding myself how pathetic i was and what a better/more productive person i'd be without the addiction, so firstly i stopped masturbating altogether. it wasn't easy but you have to keep trying if you fuck up which you probably will. i made it more difficult to get hold of any porn (deleted all the porn i had, put up blocks). it's tempting to hold onto certain photos or videos that you're particularly fond of but you HAVE to delete every single thing. every time i got the urge to watch porn or "test" to see if i could watch it and not jack off, i'd get up and do jumping jacks. that sounds stupid but it worked
>>
>>51983894
No, no. It sounds really good! It's going to be sad deleting all those pictures and videos. But if it's for getting better, I'm all for it.

Thank you anon.
>>
>>51984010
no problem. try doing other exercise as well as the jumping jacks if you don't already, that'll help a bunch and i wish i'd done it from the start. good luck
