Have $1.5k to spend on a new portable workstation. Thinking about a 3k, 32GB used w541. I don't mind the weight, how are the new trackpads however, the w540 trackpad blows big time.
Or should I just buy a used macbookpro?
Build a desktop, buy a thinkpad, install gentoo.

Why worry about trackpad when you can easily buy a wireless mouse?

I have a W540. It's a good choice if you need the quad-core grunt.

You've pretty much already gone down the correct path. Mostly everything in that price range either has a low-res screen, or doesn't have the power necessary.
The w541 has a high res screen and good performance. Get it.
What are you using it for?
