EVERYONE has something to hide and if they disagree they should have no problem sharing their phones, laptops, etc. with everyone present.

Although I can kind of see where this stupid mindset is coming from now that most people are sharing every stupid detail about their lives on Twitter/etc. and having all their data mined by Google, Microsoft, and friends.

I'm sure Jews before WW2 had nothing to hide.

>Since 1851 Amsterdam had a registry that recorded the following innocent pieces of data about the residents: Name, Date of birth, Address, Marital Status, Parents, Profession, Religion, Previous Addresses and Date of Death if deceased. For many years this system served well and was kept meticulously up to date.

please stop abstracting the government into this monolithic and vague singular entity as if it's not comprised of 40,000 unique people of varying moral fiber. here's an example of what happens with some of the information they gather behind closed doors:

>When asked whether he witnessed anything that troubled him while working in surveillance he said: 'You've got young enlisted guys, 18 to 22 years old. They've suddenly been thrust into a position of extraordinary responsibility where they now have access to all of your private records.

>'Now, in the course of their daily work they stumble across something that is completely unrelated to their work in any sort of necessary sense - for example, an intimate nude photo of someone in a sexually compromising situation, but they're extremely attractive.

>'So what they do? They turn around in their chair and show their co-worker -- and their co-worker says "hey, that's great, send that to Bill down the way." And then Bill sends it to George, George sends it to Tom, and sooner or later this person's whole life has been seen by all of these other people.'

>Mr Snowden said he had seen such instances on a number of times, adding: 'These are seen as the fringe benefits of surveillance positions.'

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2697301/Nude-photos-intercepted-NSA-shared-employees-says-whistleblower-Edward-Snowden.html

Nope. We have situations where government entities had/have information on citzens.

In the first situation, the information was used by a rogue government to later execute Jews, many years later, I might add. It's a potential for so many areas of abuse.

>I'm just saying that the "show me your credentials info" stuff gets really old REALLY fast and starts to become similar to a knee jerk, automated reaction

You're rationalizing to yourself that is the reason in order to avoid taking up the challenge presented. You claim you are in the nothing to hide camp. When challenged, oh dear! Suddenly you do. Now it becomes, "how do excuse away my lack of willingness to show I have nothing to hide?".

What if I told you I worked in government and that you could trust me? Would that put you at ease?

If not, what about all those people on the Office of Personnel Management database that got hacked? I'm sure they enjoyed getting potentially exposed to some foreign entity while being part of the very government you trust.

>>
>>51972933
You people never really think it through much do you?

The average stranger on the internet with your credentials has a lot to gain from fucking with you, and are interested in different information and ends than an NSA computer system or drone.

Government surveillance wants to identify potential "terrorists" or other threats to their power or goals, a drone who keeps tabs on thousands of people a day will care about your meaningless internet activities about as much as your doctor gives a shit about your ballsack. Even if they did, indiscriminately acting on that information in a way that would harm you would be detrimental to the NSA's mission and secrecy.

No, I see reality that lies in between. You are the naive one, with a black-and-white worldview based on assumptions, fantasies and edgy rebellion.

>The only thing governments care for is their own power.
The government does care about its people, because it has to, especially in a capitalist society. They want you to be happy because it makes you complacent, it makes you keep them in power, and it helps the bottom line of the corporate entities that run the country with them. And this is the way the US has operated since its foundation.

The 1984-esque stalinism you fantasize about is dead, it's not fucking coming, because anyone with a cursory knowledge of history who can understand context would tell you that it's a shitty way of running a country if you actually want to stay in power for long, not to mention the countries where it has been successful the longest are very, very different places culturally from the United States.

>I could claim the same - but it doesn't make it so.
Neither do your claims of "potential" abuses.

>Which are? Do explain.
The average NSA thread on /g/ is full of your type; mindless cynical STEM kiddos who think they know everything about the "true motives" of the government because they read some popular anti-stalinist propaganda novels and watched some cyberpunk movies.

The government doesn't give a fuck about you as an individual, but as a whole they want to see you fed, happy, complacent, and spending. They aren't going to mindlessly abuse surveillance data, because they know it will get them nowhere. They're not interested in dumping your nudes on some secret dark web database or siphoning whatever paltry amount of money lies in your bank account, they aren't interested in fucking you over because when they do that gives you a reason to stand against them.

>No, I see reality that lies in between

You assert you see the reality that lies in between, whatever that means. I could claim I also see the reality that lies in between.

You then get to:

>Neither do your claims of "potential" abuses.

Neither what do my claims of potential abuses? I am not asserting there *will* be guaranteed abuses of the same status as that which lead to the deaths of tens of thousands of Jews, for example. The key word here is *potential* - potential for abuse of the data.

>The average NSA thread on /g/ is full of your type; mindless cynical STEM kiddos who think they know everything about the "true motives" of the government because they read some popular anti-stalinist propaganda novels and watched some cyberpunk movies.

You make baseless assumptions because that's all you have.

>The government doesn't give a fuck about you as an individual <SNIP>

I agree actually unless they have reason to go after you. What if, say, you did something in the past that was legal but was made illegal in the future? Also, suppose then, you wanted to become more involved in politics; would you feel comfortable or anxious knowing that there is potential for blackmail or coercion due to everything being harvested?

>You assert you see the reality that lies in between, whatever that means. I could claim I also see the reality that lies in between.
I'm just saying that I don't believe the government is some benevolent entity that wipes our ass for us and gives us unlimited freedom, but I don't believe they're some mindless antagonist of the common man either like most of /g/ seems to. It's simply not in their favor to be so, whether they genuinely care about the people or only their power.

>The key word here is *potential* - potential for abuse of the data.
It's still not good that there's potential for it, don't get me wrong. Most of /g/ seems to hold the "it can happen so it IS happening because the government is evil just because" perspective so I get used to assuming that's what's being communicated. A shit excuse, but whatever.

>You make baseless assumptions because that's all you have.
Shit, I don't know. I see a lot of people throwing around shitty out-of-context 1984/BNW references, comparing the current metadata collection to stalinism, lots of retarded pseudo-intellectual bullshit being thrown out by retards with no background in government or law that reek of the type that think they're the shit for reading a couple wiki articles.

>What if, say, you did something in the past that was legal but was made illegal in the future?
But how do you know this will be enforced retroactively? Why would it? Speculation isn't always good grounds for action, although the concern is valid.

>Also, suppose then, you wanted to become more involved in politics; would you feel comfortable or anxious knowing that there is potential for blackmail or coercion due to everything being harvested?
That has always been a risk with going into politics anywhere, right or wrong. NSA data collection only potentially makes it easier. But at the same time, why do you think the NSA would waste their time on such petty shit that would endanger their mission?

>why do you think the NSA would waste their time on such petty shit that would endanger their mission?
its not so inasmuch that those of us who echo these concerns are worried about the NSA/CYBERCOM/its direct partners will utilize this information for blackmail purposes (even though it very possibly could be a thing OTR) its more malicious actors within these organizations that toy with this information on a day to day basis who by in the past hundreds if not thousands of cases of things such as SEXINT/LOVEINT have occurred.

the other issue that has not been raised as a concern yet in this thread that i have noticed from quickly grazing over it is the subversion and willful destruction of security within modern technologies to make their lives easier. while not protecting us the citizens that they are supposed to be serving and protecting from things such as APT and lower grade threats that could be mitigated better were this not taking place.

Believe it or not, your argumentation is terrible. I'm not sure if you're playing devils advocate to stir up trouble, or are merely misled when it comes to privacy.

Give us your street address. Go on, do it. There are thousands of people who visit this board daily. There are also thousands of people who work for the NSA, pilfering through data to find targets. How can you say you have nothing to hide when you choose not to disclose an address - be it your email, a street address, or even your IP address?

I mean -- truly if you were a person of interest, the powers that be would be just as benevolent as the people on the internet you are arguing with.

There goes the
>I have nothing to hide
argument.

If you want to contend in favor of such government programs be prepared to see it acted out in absolutes. You can't pull out the stops on an "internet shitposter" if said shitposter works for the government or your ISP. And that's not to mention accessing data, even improperly, does not amount to "treason".

http://www.nbcnews.com/news/other/loveint-nsa-letter-discloses-employee-eavesdropping-girlfriends-spouses-f8C11271620

It's already happening, you fuckwad. If I told you ten years ago that in the very near future, many employers require to you to disclose transcripts of your private conversations with friends and family in order to apply for a job, you would've laughed.

Now, not only is this happening, but what you write on Facebook also affects whether you'll get a visa in the States, and who knows fuck all.

You're like a frog being slowly boiled alive.
>>

There's no difference between what you and I said. You block any threat model based on the questionability of the motives of those in power by saying it's unreasonable to assume they are not pure of heart and incorruptible.

That preemptively dismisses all data supporting a non-specific instance of the aforementioned model. So either you get along with the program or get called a conspiracy theorist until specific data appears, at which point you'll respond with 20/20 hindsight that
>we half-expected / knew this anyway, this isn't news
I know because this already happened with the NSA scandal.
