I've got the same variation OP except it's the 980ti. It only coil whines in certain menus or when playing uncapped in OSU since that pulls over a thousand fps. The fans cool it nice and with a custom fan curve I've only gotten it to around 64c during intense gaymen. The fans are loud if you run them aggressive.

If you have the money get a 980Ti instead, if you are on a budget I'd recommend the 390X over getting a 980.
Worst price perf card ever, save for the titans they don't count.
390X will be better for DX12, you get 8GB VRAM even if you don't use it all shit's fucking cheaper, you get asynchronous compute which might come in handy for reducing latency in VR.
I have a gigabyte 980 G1 gaming, managed to push it to 1478MHz boost on core and 8GHz memory clock. They can overclock a fair bit but don't expect it to reach stock reference 980Ti performance.
390 non X is the best bang for buck card at the moment, regardless if you are not desperate now I suggest you wait a few months for pascal.

Async compute and DX12 will likely be what gimps maxwell in the future as tessellation was to Kepler.
