Because it's hard to design an OS that can hotswap its kernel and other coreutils.
Even in Linux you gotta do it manually.

Microsoft rather wants you to reboot your machine than to get exploited through http.sys

That's a server example, but the same principal applies to client patches.
NT has always tried to build everything into one package. Linux never tried to do such, so patches are less disruptive.

Even if you configure it, you still have to restart (possibly more than once) to install trivial updates. On Linux, you can update the KERNEL without a reboot.

this is how it works on since XP if you receive a big critical update and you don't restart.

since XP you had to change the update settings to only "download" or only just "notify".
though with 10 this is a lot more difficult.

well I upgraded back then because it had virtual desktops.
I loved those on Linux, and I used them after I upgraded.
The Win+Tab is also a nice addition.

Other than that, it sucked balls.
Few updates, a few app broke.
Then came the big Thrash2 update, which killed some business critical apps as well.

On the other laptop and desktop, I have got BSODs after updates randomly.
Like an update came in, I installed it, next day BSOD during work.
Since then we are back to 7 and 8.1.

Seriously though, unless you can pay 130$ or more for Enterprise, you are fucked.
Without LTSB, it's a piece of shit.
I don't even understand this Insider shit.
It is supposed to test updates.
Meanwhile Microsoft just shoves all the untested shit on normal users.

There is only a 'you get fucked by Nutella' ring.
>>
>>51949242
The point isn't that you need to restart the computer to update kernel mods (no, Windows doesn't update the kernel in-version). The point is that it restarts anyway even if you don't allow it. Imagine doing a presentation and mid-way it just restarts to update, so you have to wait 30 minutes for shit like OneDrive and Cortana to get updated while the entire attendance sits there.
>>
>>51952141
>I'm convinced most of the Win10 users are /v/irgins.

>>

>Clearly every other OS does just fine.
Ubuntu prompts the user if a restart is needed.
There is no auto timer though (which is really, really retarded.)
Unless some application blocks the reboot, your work will be gone when Windows closes everything.

It's the most retarded design decision ever seen.
I mean it's ok you pull this shit, that's not bad, everyone makes mistakes.
But to never fix it? That's just dumb.
How hard would it be to only install updates at reboot/shutdown IF the update is so critical it needs a reboot?

> I'm convinced most of the Win10 users are /v/irgins.
Lot of people fell for the DX12 meme.
And even latest cards barely support the full DX12 specification.
Older ones? Through software. Which is bullshit.

And which games come with DX12 support?
There is only one 'game', the Sins of Solar Empire, some shit tier RTS game.
Which is not even finished. lel.

>>
>>51952254
Ok, but then don't force restart and people won't lose work and won't wait. We're agreeing on this, right?
>>
>>51952295
Yeah, of course.
But the reboot thing does not happen if you are at the computer.
It only reboots if you see that popup in bottom-right and it counts down.

The work thing - well, imagine you go grab a coffee, then you notice the kitchen is dirty.
Whatever, you spend ~30 minutes outside.
Well, the dialog came up 5 minutes after you left your computer, and did a reboot (countdown is 10-15 minutes).

And yeah Windows stops the reboot IF there is an application that halts it.
Like Notepad, if you have an unsaved document, will stop it.
But:
1) Windows may close all the other apps and only stops when it gets to Notepad
2) Most programs do not implement this behaviour
>>
>WHY DOES MICROSOFT THINK THIS IS OKAY

Because normal fags wouldn't reboot if they weren't forced to. They wouldn't get patched and they would get owned and they would blame Microsoft.

>But the reboot thing does not happen if you are at the computer
It does, or can rather, if you're in a game.
Was playing Fallout 4 (yes I know it sucks) on Win7 in a borderless Window and suddenly bzzt, computer shuts down for no apparent reason.
Start the thing back up and oh look, Windows felt it imperative to close everything because it wanted to update my dictionary or some shit.
>>
>>51952396
Mate you got shit mixed up.
I said Ubuntu prompts, but respects the user. That's cool.

Windows reboots and fucks your shit up, if you leave your PC.
I have nothing against how Ubuntu works, it's totally fine.
If Windows did that - show a prompt, I would not complain.

>>51952407
Yeah, if something covers the popup, that's another thing, you are right.
Anyway, it's fucking bullshit - there is no way to defend this.
Only Nutella posters would do that.
>>
>>51952231
>Unless some application blocks the reboot, your work will be gone when Windows closes everything.
False.

At most their frontend for apt might prompt for a reboot if the kernel was updated (and by prompt I literally mean a simple dialog that you can hit 'restart now' or 'restart later'), but it will never force you. If it is then I call complete bullshit. I've used unity, gnome, xfce, etc, never have any of them ever forced a reboot on me. Shit on my ubuntu 15.04 server right now I've had a reboot pending for 3 weeks due to a kernel update, not restarting until I have a reason.

Or you could just not use the frontend and just use apt from the cli, it'll yield the same results anyway.

It never does this for me, which leads me to believe you didn't disable all the prompts for updating properly.
