I5 4690. Should've bought K, but this was $50 cheaper and I thought I'd just have this system for a year or so. But things lead to another and now it's running an R9 390X instead of twin R9 280s and the CPU could deliver more if it could be overclocked. The turbo boost takes it to 4ghz (or so) so I don't know if I REALLY need a K model. Could overclock it by increasing BCLK but that takes it to 4ghz only where it's going automatically already...

Still, it was only 50 bucks.

Buying a GTX 980 on impulse.

The signs were all there,
>neglecting kepler merely 2 years after its release in favor of Maxwell
>misleading PR about 970 ROPs and VRAM
>GimpWorks with overboard tesselation

Fell for the "Full" DX12 meme, only to find out later Maxwell does not support tier 3 resource binding and its performance on ashes of the singularity was abysmal which is a bad sign for the near future. As well as lack of async compute modules, you can only do one asynchronous operation.

Its DX11 performance and power consumption is pretty good, but for the price I payed even the 390X would have been a far better option in the long run had I waited a little longer.
>better at DX12
>8 asynchronous compute modules
>double the amount of VRAM even if only useful in crossfire or for certain VRAM intensive mods (it is 100 fuckin ausbucks cheaper)

I have no doubt 390X will exceed 980 performance come pascal once driver overhead is reduced, just like the 290X fucked the 780 in the ass in the long run.

Let's see what becomes of the 980 for VR, apparently LiquidVR is better at least as far as latency is concerned but that is all rumors won't know until VR is out.

MRS sounds promising, buzzword at this point until it is implemented, but apparently it requires gameborksVR. Hopefully devs will be able to implement a hardware agnostic solution that works similarly for games that don't use gameworksVR.

VRSLI apparently doesn't scale as well and crossfire, but that won't be a big deal until most VR titles start supporting multiGPU setups. Apparently it is easier to split workload between 2 GPUs for VR as they can work independently on one eye each.

I tired team green for once, fuck me if I ever make that mistake ever again.

Asus reference GTX970.

Massive framerate drops in anything that uses more than 3.5GB of VRAM, which is actually surprisingly common at 1440p.
Replaced it with a 290X VaporX 8GB, couldn't be happier for the money.

>Sold the 970 to a mate, the 3.5GB issue is actually a lot better than it used to be, it seems game devs have accounted for the fact that 970 only has 3.5GB usable and are limiting to that based on gpu string - so even though you'll never use all 4GB, it's no longer a stutterfest.

Don't expect much, Nvidia didn't make Maxwell in mind for it at all.

http://wccftech.com/preemption-context-switching-allegedly-best-amd-pretty-good-intel-catastrophic-nvidia/

Not sure if AMD did either, might have just been lucky, but their ACE works wonderfully for VR. Of course Nvidia fanboys will say this doesn't matter because devs will tune for Nvidia since they have majority of market share but I don't buy it since VR needs to be as bleeding edge as possible and of course this will just be more reason for Nvidia to fix it in Pascal and then have people upgrade again just like the having far lower tessellation performance in Kepler.

>>51959333
Oculus did state the minimum spec for oculus CV1 is 970 or r9 290 so a 980 should be fine for a year or two until AMD releases their 14nm GPU with HBM2 and better HMDs are out.

Plus over time they will develop better techniques and tools to optimize software for VR, so performance will improve across the board. MRS sounds really useful, hopefully AMD works on something similar in liquidVR or it is implemented in the SDK.
>>
>>51959706
That's for everything on their Oculus Store is all they said and that also just means that's the minimum requirements. Notice how shitty the minimum requirements are for current games in comparison to the recommended specs? Now imagine that for VR, that's why the recommended specs are always 980 Ti for many games, in reality even a 980 Ti isn't good enough. Also talked with a AMD guy that demo'd Crytek's new dino game for me. He said Fury X was minimum for CV1/CB running it stable, they tried on a 290x and it couldn't handle it for CB/CV1, only for the DK2
>>
>>51960073
>in reality even a 980 Ti isn't good enough
I wish I got that last 290X in stock at MSY for half the price of a 980 to hold me off for a year until arctic islands releases.

I suppose there is no point crying over spilt milk this early, VR isn't even out yet let alone enough games come launch supporting it.

I'll be playing around with web content and JanusVR mostly along with the odd VR game or two until the medium matures. Will just have to live with lowered settings until I find a good time to upgrade.

I think I'll still be playing a fair bit of my backlog that doesn't have VR support on a monitor for a long time so it is not all doom and gloom.
