Is this the best piece of software ever created to fulfill my autistic needs of organization and productivity?

yes it's pretty good. perfect for pen input (not the app, the desktop program).

I use OneNote as literally, my second brain. I have tons and tons of linux/ networking/ scripting/ coding/ fitness/ and general finance info stored.

I got office 365 through my school. Don't use OneNote though. Why is it being praised?
>>
>>51940368
Because it is fucking great.

It's kind of embarrassing but I have a WP(1520) and one note workflow is in a great synergy between my pc and my phone.
>>
Is there any difference from every other note taking application?
No?
Gonna keep KEEP tank you very much. It is already bloated as it is now
>>
>>51939260
It's pretty cool, but since I don't do Windows away from the office I've been using RedNoteBook.
>>
>>51940350
I have scoured the earth and found nothing like it.

Also, if you want a kek, open Windows Journal on a Windows PC, and think about the fact that it exists, that someone made it, that somebody probably uses it, and that hardly anyone has even heard of it.
>>
>>51939260
Isn't this just a program that lets you take notes on a surface? I'm pretty close to buying an SP4 m3 model just for having a light laptop/note taking device for university and from what I can tell, that's the entire point of that program.
>>
I thought they murdered onenote with their new app. Is there an official download of the desktop program somewhere? Google isn't helping.
>>
>>51940648
I found it. They hid the download link to push their retarded app. Go to https://www.onenote.com/download and click Other download options.
>>
>>51940350
there are some alternatives, but you need at least three different programs to replicate the functionality, especially if you use a pentablet.

OneNote seems to be praised everywhere. For what feature do you use it that can't be replicated by other note taking applications.

I don't know if this is a question but I'm going to respond like it is anyway.

One note has some pretty awesome OCR for both inserted pictures and handwriting. It's one of my favorite features. I used it commonly for notes in math classes.

>>51940887
It works well enough for lists. If you are making a document though for other people, it's not very good. It's an organizational tool, not a presentation tool.

i store all my things as bulletpoints under other bulletpoints.

cant get any more efficient than that in terms of note-taking.

one-note cant do that.

no part of it has anything to do with presenting of material.

its just a very efficient way of condensing ideas.
i dont even have to use sentences.

Taking notes

Record audio while taking notes (if you click on the stuff you've written down you can jump to the associated audio passage)

Sharing notes in realtime with your classmates

You are not restricted to a format like DIN A4

pen shortcuts

Import images or pdfs

Image to text

Drawings into shapes

And you can organize it nicely

Those are the features I mainly use. There is alot more

Yeah it's pretty boss. I've used it to turn a printed document into a digital one by taking a picture of it and pasting it into a one note page. It worked way better than I expected and way better than the OCR software that came with my last scanner. It's also pretty decent with handwriting, especially because you can train it.

Can you guys hurry up and allow password unlocking on mobile devices?

I have a bunch of locked folders and I cannot view them on my mobile devices. It's extremely frustrating because all of my personal research is on there and I sometimes just want to look at it while on the go.
>>

I don't work with mobile, but can see what's the hold up. Which mobile platform are you talking about? As far as I know, windows phone and web mobile both allow password unlocking. I'd hazard a guess that ios works too, which would only leave android.
>>

Yup, I'm on Android.

I have a Nexus 6 running Marshmallow which runs Marshmallow that's coupled with great encryption (supposedly).

I do know that updating for Android is an absolute nightmare due to fragmentation.

>Please abandon the onenote app and work on the desktop program instead.
Never gonna happen

>An anon in this thread mentioned he wanted to merge/split tables.
The table functionality in onenote is less than excels. Even importing a table with merged columns results in split columns. The Word guys have merged table cells, but don't have buttons for merging/splitting. I'll have to see what they do and see if it's feasible to steal.

>It would be nice if there were an integrated calendar or work together with Outlook's calendar. I don't have Outlook so I don't know if it already exists.
Cross office work is frustrating. Every group tends to do their own thing, so it's hard to get collaboration. There is an "outlook tasks" section in the desktop that's sort of a link between the two. You'll see a flag in onenote and an event in outlook that link to each other.

>>51942389
>Export as an image
I know they have added exporting to multiple file types in all the major desktop versions, but I'm unsure if we'll see this in the universal version. They like to keep the universal version a simplified version. I'll look for it in the backlog.

We like you to have a MS account. It allows us to attempt to sell you office 365. Additionally, if you store your onenote in onedrive, we can do the OCR/handwriting recognition on the servers. Otherwise the phone never gets the recognition due to draining battery life and people complain about high cpu usage if the desktop version does it.

It depends entirely on what features you use. For Android, Squid is great for handwritten notes assuming your tablet supports na active stylus, and the simple section-folder organization works great. If you don't take hand-written notes, Evernote is pretty nice.

>We like you to have a MS account. It allows us to attempt to sell you office 365
You already do that by repeatedly giving me notifications that I should buy office 365. Is this the price of getting Windows 10 for free? You all get a platform to distribute advertisements for Microsoft products directly in the operating system?

>Additionally, if you store your onenote in onedrive, we can do the OCR/handwriting recognition on the servers
Yes, but if I'm accessing my files in the cloud, I'm wasting bandwidth, and I'm letting someone else look through my shit. It's much easier to just put my files on my hard drive or my external. Fast reads/writes and I'm the only one with access.
>>
>>51943317
>Is this the price of getting Windows 10 for free?
Sure. When you use Windows 10 and OneNote for free, we want you to buy something.

If you want to save it locally, then use the desktop version and don't save it in your OneDrive folder. It's that simple.

the send to one note thing is actually a separate window that I captured with your post. >>
>>51944481
why would one note make your keyboard work better for taking notes in math class?

Also, you are using the wrong stylus. You need to look for a wacom or ntrig pen tablet. Significant difference. Hover detection, palm rejection, pressure sensitive, some models are tilt sensitive, multiple buttons on the stylus, etc.

PDFs are indexed by the file search of my OS, never needed anything else. When you already have text it seems kind of bogus to store it as a picture. OneNote with those features enabled tends to explode to a galactic ram usage and is hardly usable and it tends to bloat up annotaed PDFs to size of multiple hundred MBs.

other than the actual fact that you don't learn as much by typing over writing. writing is a totally different function that follows symbolic logic and other shit that our brains are wired for and have been for thousands of years and typing is just remembering where keys are using muscle memory and does not serve as a good remembrance to anything. google it if you're so skeptical.
>>
I started using one note for my undergrad and fell in love with it. I've since used it also for my master's and am now using it at work, for private studies and everything that requires me writing something down.

[citation needed]

I cannot find any study that seems to suggest this. If anything, the general consensus is that writing notes by hand forces one to refine their notes whereas typing is quicker and therefore tends to verbatim notes, i.e. without critical thinking [1]. Furthermore, digital note taking increases the opportunity for distraction [2] and the cognitive work load necessary to take notes [3]. However, provided enough self-discipline and experience with a stylus system, e.g. a Surface with OneNote, all three of these observations are effectively nil. I generally agree with the suggestion that typing notes is not as effective though I beg to differ that digital handwriting is fruitless, if not by personal anecdote but by reasoning alone.

I use Google Keep. Available on both Chrome and Android. They should change the name, though.

Yeah I didn't even know that existed, figured you guys were just stuck with the suite (docs sheets etc)

Speaking of which onenote's chart function is still near useless.

-export to .pdf
-encrypt the .pdf
-change to .pdf, or export the .onenote files to somewhere else local
-onenote online
>>
>all this talk about encryption

Who the fuck is actually putting delicate information in something like OneNote? Jesus Christ.

Since when has onenote been free? I paid for office 2010 (albeit at a discounted rate) just so I could have a copy of onenote. It's the best piece of software of its kind so worth the money but if it's been free all this time I would have felt a clown.

Oh thank god I didn't waste my money five years ago then.

Then you can't change your existing notes anymore, your progress is lost. Also, the PDF export messes up and it won't render properly for most PDF viewers, I've used that multiple time.

>-onenote online
Then you are forced to upload your files and technically you are still forced to use onenote to open your notes. Assuming the web app would be an option, if it works as "stable" and "smooth" as the other office web apps its practically useless for any form of productive work. You will not be able to convince anyone to use it.

is this normal /g/? is microsoft just checking if I'm pirating any other piece of software they own?

It's normal.
>>

it's still installing lol
is it preloading the whole office package or something?
>>
>>51949849
It's probably downloading more files and your Internet is just shit.
>>
Never really used OneNote before...

can you use the hand-writing detection for inserting formatted math equations?
>>
>>51949889
just installed the desktop app and I haven't figured out how to use the hand-writing detection yet
>>51949887
or maybe microsoft's servers are overloaded as always
>>
>>51949889
>>51949984
looks like it only supports it if you enter it using a touchscreen and not a mouse
>>

I do this cause I mainly type on my laptop
>have Sublime
>open a tab for classes notes
>save all tabs to Dropbox
>gets synced to my file server
>can access it from phone if i need to review notes on the bus before test
but for random ideas, reminders, and brain farts I use Google Keep since it works great on my phone and I can voice type bigger ideas while walking.

>everything

I thought it was just a basic word processor with a doodling tool and the ability to organise pages into virtual notebooks? It's pretty barebones.

Use Xournal

The same way that Chrome is just a webpage displayer, a Note 4 is just a phone and the Linux kernel just a software and hardware connector
>>
>>51952745
well what does it have that makes it so much better than other note taking programs?
>>
>>51952205
why not just use a literal todo.txt file and echo your shit into it?
freetards and their "muh simplicity" are too much sometimes
>>
>>51952820
you can improve that by using the .log file ending
Windows will affix date and time automatically everytime you change the file.
>>
>>51939260
Evernote is literally dead and finished now

I feel conflicted because sometimes I use this and other times I use org-mode. Most of the time I use Supermemo though. Lists go in org-mode (you can use that web app that's not free and 10x inferior if you're a scrub though). OneNote I have set up sort of like a real notebook, and just chuck a bunch of shit in it. Supermemo is for reading and remembering shit.

It's free enough
