Why doesn't your local coffee shop have a $50 off-the-grid file sharing apparatus, /g/?
>>
>>51936592
I don't get it what is it?

And why does it have to be discreet?
>>
Errrr is that even a piratebox matey?

Isn't the real thing far superior?

Seems like a silly idea is all

Threadly reminder to practice safe computing and use a condom.
>>
>>51937581
>real thing

you have to set it up however you'd like.
>>
>>51937581
"The real thing" is any device that runs software which creates a Wi-Fi AP with the PirateBox UI. This includes routers, raspberry pis, android phones, laptops running virtual machines, probably even some smart watches. If you've seen little grey cubes with a skull and crossbones on them, that's just a sticker on some portable Wi-Fi router with particularly good PB support.
>>51937688
Are you memeing or what?

>>51937581
Thank you for the link you are 1000x more helpful than OP>>51937688
>>
>>51937688
What is that
>>
>>51938176
A "USB condom" is an adapter that disconnects the data pins on a USB device so that only power can get through. That doesn't seem very relevant for this, though, and although I'm hardly an expert at electronics, it doesn't look like that's what that circuit board is doing.
>>
>>51937510
>What is it?
>literally has subject name of device

>>51938176
>What is that?
>literally the filename is labelled USB condom - take a wild guess at what a USB condom would do

why are fucking normie morons allowed here?
>>
>>51938372
Oh genius, a name of a device! The only way it could be better is if it actually described what it does!
>>
>>51938372
You're a fucking idiot
>>
>>51938405
So, /g/ users cannot use google nor do they already know about pirateboxes.

Looking good so far still
>>
I know what it is, but why the fuck destroy a perfectly good book instead of storing it in your car outside?
>>
>>51937688

Couldn't you just get a normal USB cable and cut the data lines yourself?
>>
>>51938503
Hiding it in plain sight. I believe the person who made this said they did so to keep it running in class without suspicion.
>>
Do they make hollow butt plugs for things like this? The Raspi Zero could probably fit in one, but I don't want to risk hollowing it out myself.
>>
>>51938372
Asshole alert

Destroying books.
Fucking nazi.

i was just on piratebox through my android, and nobody's there. something wrong?

It's libcucks who want to destroy books
>>

>>

>>
>>51939784
And they go out in public to do that? I could understand the people who do it at UNI, they could share textbook pdfs and notes
>>

Needs a fuse, don't want someone pumping 240VAC into my phone.
By that thing on power being labled "R1" I'm guessing it's not a fuse
>>
>>51942788
>250 volts

Honestly the USB cable would probably ignite before the fuse even started to blow
>>
>>51936592
Literally no better than a USB key tethered with a chain. In fact, much worse.
>>
>>51940385
Isn't it wireless?
I thought that's what the little blue dongle was for...

I used to have one on my pi, 10000mAh got about 6hrs of runtime.

No one found it, I guess if it was a permanent thing people might if you are lucky.
>>
>>51943577

That's the exact reason I'd never make one of these.

I've read quite a lot about them, and what's missing is stories about how well they worked and all the cool shit people posted to it.

There's this other thing that people use instead, I think it's called "the internet" or something.
>>
>>51936592

The people in this thread are baboons.

If it was easier to setup you'd see more of them.
>>
>>51943565
I think something up on a pole or concealed somehow, with a nice cheap solar panel and a good old lead acid battery would be best.

If it was properly weatherproofed it'd last for years and years because the draw on the battery would be so small. Nickel-iron would be better, those fuckers can last for 50 years but they are expensive.

Woah, I was thinking of just a thumbdrive stuck in a wall...
>>
Besides CP what do you guys share on your pirate box?
>>
Can you explain how exaclty this is useful ? Can't I just use a portable router with a USB stick connected and shared as a samba drive ? Wouldn't it achieve the same thing ?
>>
>>51943923
Yes but some asshole will chip that SOB out for crack rocks some day.

If your little wifi server box is just humming away tucked in between a couple air vents on top a building, nobody will ever even notice it.
>>
literally why though? tell me about times you've used this, and how it's benefited you. because it seems like a gimmick
>>
>>51937688

Will one of those charge your phone more slowly?
>>
>>51938372
A usb condom would make it so when you plug it in nothing is transferred, so either the name is misleading and there's something else to it, or it's completely useless and you should just not plug in the usb. Also not giving people information when they ask for it is to deny mankind's progress and ultimately leads to the downfall of humanity.
>>
>>51936592
should run one at home, i live in an apartment with probably around 200 other students all close by for a wifi signal
>>
>>51944477
Yes. But it's a good compromise when all you have is a public "charging station" with a single USB wire sticking out. Carry your own charger and find a normal wall socket if possible. Or an external battery or something.
>>
So, a glorified seedbox right?
>>
>>51944522
>not giving people information when they ask for it is to deny mankind's progress and ultimately leads to the downfall of humanity
Wew lad.

It's for protecting yourself against malicious devices exploting your data connection for gaining access to your files, and more importantly, for installing backdoored USB firmware on your device.

>>
>>51945343
that's exactly what these are, shitskull

They just have piratebox running on a HTTP server - as a web interface, for chat and file sharing
>>
So whats the use for These things? You just share stuff with other People like games or what?
And deaddrops are the same but you have to connect via usb?
>>
>>51945886
It's usually a form of offline piracy.
Anyone can load them up with music, movies, porn, etc.
>>
>>51945714
