I'm guessing it could be possible even if you do have a discrete graphics unit, because your CPU could access it very fast. I think it would just need to be engineered to work like that.

GDDR5 is designed for graphics and can't really be compared to normal DDR3/4.

PC systems do use GDDR5 in the sense that most dedicated graphics cards have GDDR5 onboard, with the most bleeding edge cards using the superior HBM.

So we do use GDDR5 in our systems when you think of the graphics card as a sub-system (which it technically is).
