1ms response time is retarded and adds sometimes hundreds to the cost of something when your average PC gamer cannot tell the difference in response times 6-8ms and under. Maybe if you were a fighter pilot or play CSGO competitively or something, but I doubt there are many of those here.
144Hz is stupid for anyone but twitch shooter pros. 96 with adaptive sync would be perfect.

I wouldn't go that far; there definitely are shit monitors that are so shit they're a pain to do anything on.
I saw one Samsung "monitor" (probably a TV in disguise) lag so badly it was hard to even click things accurately with the mouse. And then there's trash tier TN panels with like 1:100 contrast ratio where you can barely see subtle detail at all and the viewing angles are so bad you definitely will miss things outside the 5 degree vertical sweet spot.
You don't really need an edgy gaming monitor to avoid all of that. Though 120 Hz motion still looks really nice.

Old games running on simple hardware tend to have really low latencies in general. The NES/Famicom didn't even have a front buffer, let alone back buffers, command/present queues, window event handling, etc.
Some of those games are really hard to play now because you never had much time to react to begin with and the margin is much lower when your overall input-to-screen latency is just a bit higher.
