Deepin is literally the best Ubuntu variant I've come across.

It actually works, has a software center with USEFUL software people use and a new interface that I find quite interesting. It's lightweight and suitable for laptop usage, and doesn't suck when coming to drivers or proprietary software.
Topped off with the familiarity of the apt-get package manager, I think that this is probably the best out-of-the-box you're going to get out of a distro, with maybe the exclusion of Mint.

Why not try it?

I was going to take a look at deepin because I like to just try different distros and see which ones are comfy.

Then I noticed this is chinese stuff.

I can see why you wouldn't want to use it, since it looks quite sketchy and could possibly be a Chinese botnet.
However, once when you actually boot into the system, I can promise you it's not that horrible.
Plus, companies such as Xiaomi and OnePlus are Chinese and have a good reputation of selling decent products, so I wouldn't completely discard all Chinese software/products yet.
>>
>>51920080
It's not just about trustworthiness, which the chinese are notorious for, but also quality of the craft, which chinese are equally notorious for.

I fully expect to see noob beginner shit and comments in chinese characters plastered all over if I looked into their source code.

"Chinese" and "doing something right" are 2 concepts that don't mix, ever.

Why not take a look yourself?

Looks good and the Chinese make good stuff. Almost all the stuff you like and consider high quality is made in China.

Why should I download it when Porteus is only 100MB~ and it just werks?

The settings center for this is a little strange, but it's kinda neat.

Porteus looks pretty cool, but for me personally I perfer a little more eyecandy. Plus Deepin is based off Debian, so I'm a little more familiar with it's package manager than I am with Slackware's.
>>
>>51920641
oh ok

For me, I only use Porteus casually since it's not my main OS so I don't really care much about how it looks.

What DE does it use?
It looks really nice
>>
>>51920794
It's actually using it's own DE called the Deepin Desktop Environment, which is primarily based off HTML5 and WebKit.

Switching desktop sessions looks very pretty.

You can also download and use the DDE on Arch:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Deepin_Desktop_Environment

which is pretty cool of the devs to do.

So far so good
I'm actually really fucking impressed, it has options built in to the settings panel change the boot order and the length of the boot menu, you can even change the colors and background image for it.
And I'm running this on my laptop, which fucking hates linux. Even basic shit like Ubuntu and Mint run like ass on this thing and are basically unusable, but everything here is running smoothly
Even the wifi, which doesn't work at all in Ubuntu, is fine
I don't want to be a shill here but if you've never tired deepin, I highly suggest doing so. This could be huge for people who don't know much about linux but want to try it, or people who just want an easy going OS
It just werks.
>>
>>51922038
Sounds good!
Are you running the 2014 stable version or the beta that came out today? I'm just wondering if there have been any major UI/installer changes that occurred since then.
>>
>>51919929
isn't deepin chinese botnet or am I thinking of another distro?

Stable version
I've seen some videos of the beta and the biggest difference is that the file manager is on one bar like in gnome
So far the only issue I've run into is the graphics driver menu goes back to the default directly after it's finished installing the proprietary driver.
Maybe I just need to reboot

You can pick whatever distro/desktop you like. I've been distro-hopping for a while and have found Deepin to be one of the better ones I've tried. It works for me pleasantly, which is why I'm reccomending it.
