So what does /g/ think about ARM architecture for the prospect of gaming?
Currently x86_64 (or AMD64) has been dominating the gaming scene with amazingly strong hardware and the huge variety of add-on hardware in the form of PCIe cards. We have overlooked the opportunities that ARM presents because the AMD64 has been good enough. AMD64 desktops consume a lot more energy than ARM, but offer higher performance too.
Recently i received an invitation from a friend to download this game on my android phone, i dont usually play games on my phone and prefer my desktop but i felt like i should give this a try. I downloaded the game an frankly, was stunned by the graphics quality. The game itself is nothing special but the graphics are very impressive for a mobile game, maybe ARM could be the future of gaming, i mean a 650W machine will give you amazing performance, but your phone, which runs on an ARM CPU and consumes like 5-10W in worst case scenario can still manage to run 'good enough' games.

tl;dr what do you guys think of gaming on ARM?

guess who's the real manchild?

I dont know OP, but this is the first time i am seeing graphics this fucking good on an ARM machine desu.
ARM is generally associated with faggy bird and candy crush
>>
>>51894262
ARM has no future in gaming, maybe angry birds but thats about it

implying a n3150 cannot do the same at 6-10 watts

The PS Vita has shown ARM's gaming capability since 2011. The problem is no one wants to make decent games, only cash grabs these days.

It's what happens when a AAA developer puts in some serious effort. Vita is 2011 hardware to boot but it still has quad core CPU, quad core GPU and the GPU has 128mb VRAM.

Gee anon we reached half life 1 level of graphics
We just need to recover 16 years of work
>>
>>51894629
Remember:
>Vita CPU clock speed is 333MHz by default and ranges 41-444MHz by PMC. GPU 111MHz and ranges 41-222MHz. Thanks to xyz for the tests.

That's miles better than hl1 graphics

Mostly everything in this world revolves around x86. I don't see ARM taking that away, it's just not. Yes, we are gonna see very powerful mobile hardware in the future, but ain't replacing good ol x86
>>
>>51894262
They use exactly same GPUS, just fewer cores. CPU makes no difference here.

>but ain't replacing good ol x86

We'll see x86 phones before we see ARM based desktop gaming.

x86 phones are already a thing
>>
>>51894752
What is the limitation with ARM? Can't they make ARM based high end CPUs like Intel made x86 based high end ones?
>>
>>51894883
Limited instruction set and low single thread performance, even if one at 5GHz existed.

It will always be a mobile niche but it's nice to see improvements. I never even realized that Vita was ARM tech.

As long as ARM's main selling point is power efficiency it isn't going to have the muscle to replace x86 gaming. People don't care about running a 5-10W machine when they want gaming entertainment unless they're stuck traveling or otherwise away from home. They are willing to pay for 300-500W machines because electricity is cheap.
