Seriously, it's possible?

Just what I was thinking haha
>>
In theory, yes.
>>
*close OUR internet
>>
No, not unless the person suggesting such a notion want to become the biggest idiot in the world.

Many projects have tried to restructure the Internet. Zeronet, I2P, Freenet, etc...

If you shut down one, you just open up more.

It's similar to Bittorent piracy. You closed down Piratebay? Kewl, I'll just go to KAT or whatnot.
>>
Only in North Korea.

Well, most communication is non-verbal, and context is a huge factor in english...
But, Trump was not saying that sarcastically, and it's normally said fairly in context, so you're pretty much spot on for him.
>>
>>51888049
He can't close the entire internet because the entire world will break down; people have become too dependent on it. What he most likely wants is to ban arab ISPs or known extremist sites so that communication between terrorists will be stifled and propaganda is harder to spread.

Then again he has about the same understanding of technology as any other geezer his age so I won't blame him as long as he doesn't go full retard as president

closing the internet is like shutting down the roads. you can shut down some of the major conduits easily enough (even without state sponsorship - i.e. sabotage or whatever), but comprehensively shutting down every (in the road example, *literal*) avenue of telecommunication/travel is just bonkers. It's the kind of thing a child would imagine while playing a made up game with other children.
>>
>>51888877

>>
>>51889071
it's not that hard to create a protocol, depending on the level and richness. you could create a handshake protocol that ignores everything but a small handful of messages used for the handshake, and implement it on top of existing tech protocols (which is necessary anyway; at some level of abstraction everything is just implemented on top of existing protocols).
>>

Reddit tried this a few years ago around when SOPA was going to get passed. The project had mixed success, mainly because it required users to be within wifi range of each other (<1km and within line of sight), or else tunnel through the regular internet which sort of defeats the purpose.

Books don't need batteries kid.

Also there were two internet from the start if you read up on it. The term "internet" is a commercialized alias. Dig alittle to find it's original name, along with more answers.

Ask and ye shall recieve, but being spoonfed all the time is unrealistic. Sometimes you need to ask in a different place or time; or search for that answer yourself.

If you theorhetically found a box with enough fiber optic cables to cover the entire US and around 30 technicians, you could make a second internet then and there. In theory, taking out the DNS root servers would render the internet mostly useless.
However, ICANN wouldn't do that. Especially since many sovereign nations host the root DNS servers, and the backbone of the internet is still there.

Nearly every one of Trump's proposals he wouldn't be able to get implemented by his own say-so. Unless the guy plans on collecting power and tearing apart the three branches of governments and granting himself supreme ruler of the US, I'd genuinely be surprised if any of his plans made it into action.

Absolutely. But, as far as Trump's options go, it would be the only ~somewhat~ reasonable plan. Unless he plans to sever the US's underwater fiber cables and force ISPs to destroy all of their equipment, that is.

Let's face it, he has no idea what he is talking about and made up the whole "shut down the internet" thing right from his asshole. He probably figured Bill Gates had an on/off switch for the Internet, found out that such a thing doesn't exist, and then went on with it just to surf on publicity. That is, if he's found out that it doesn't exist at all.

so that's actually where things get interesting.
ICANN runs the root name servers, with supervision from the Commerce department.
Somewhere in 2016 ICANN will no longer have United States government oversight on such things, which means ICANN could just completely refuse to shut down the RNS, which I'm guessing they probably would. Following that Trump would have to claim eminent domain on the servers themselves, which many of which are distributed across multiple countries.

This, listen to what he says at debates.
Which is, to say, not much. He really only glosses over the things he wants to get done (I'm not even going to repeat them, you already know what he wants) and offers his position on certain stances, which typically are more centric (i.e. gun rights. For a democrat, he's more centric on gun control than the others, especially since he's from a rural state.)
>>
>>51889893
>Centric
No. He's always whining about muh common sense gun control. Back in 2013, he had a massive spergout in support finestein's 2013 AWB push. The only argument that he's progun in any way is that he voted against the brady bill, and that was a fluke.

Nice quads, so I'll contribute.
I read an article by a pirate bay guy talking about how people view the internet as separate from society, while in reality an oppressed internet = an oppressed society. He had good points until he went full socialist, claiming even that he wants Trump to win solely because it will faster bring upon the collapse of our society so that we can rebuild a communist one.
I personally don't think communism 'works' on a large scale (does anything work in something as massive as the US?).

The gun "control" policies in this state are innumerable and fucking ridiculous. No barrel shrouds, .50cal, 10 round magazines, bullet buttons, etc. These are entirely just feel-good bills that have no measurable effect on anything gun deaths related.

What WOULD be a good idea, however, would be compulsory gun safety classes for first time buyers. Something like a weekend course or whatever. You're more likely to shoot yourself than anyone else, even excluding intentional suicide deaths.

>>51890066
Doctor-patient privacy laws prevent disclosure of mental health. But, a basic psychiatric exam isn't out of the question. Not my area of expertise though. Consider someone on heavy anti psychotic medicine, however. I don't think they should be allowed to own a gun at danger of putting themselves and others at risk of harm. I think everyone would agree with that, just not how to implement it. Provided a solution was available, I think it would be a reasonable one.
>>
>>51890079
oh, well for starters i would have mental illness added to it if it already isnt. and as much as i like private sales because of how easy they are, background checks should be involved. yeah, a minor inconvenience but whatever

>Consider someone on heavy anti psychotic medicine, however

You realize antipsychotics are the most prescribed psychiatric drug class in this country in 2015?

It's not 1955 anymore. Big Pharma has made certain everyone's on hardcore shit for everything from depression (https://www.abilify.com/abilify-for-depression.aspx) to anxiety (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2720845/) to autism (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2171144/) to personality disorders (http://www.medscape.org/viewarticle/479929_5).

http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2014/11/09/mother-s-little-anti-psychotic-is-worth-6-9-billion-a-year.html

http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2015/08/150820134711.htm

If you want to take away a fifth of the the population's gun rights (http://www.newsweek.com/nearly-1-5-americans-suffer-mental-illness-each-year-230608) 42 million people stripped of their 2nd Amendment rights like common convicts, then it would only ever be in lieu of full firearm restriction/licensing because it's unenforceable otherwise. No wonder the statists always push for it. Sounds harmless, right? Take away the guns from the scary mentally ill people instead of bothering trying to fix the root of the problem: that the mental health system in this country is controlled by pharmaceutical interests who push the myth that one can pill away one's problems down everyone's throat.

Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain.

>Would you support, in theory, a provision to have basic psychiatric tests as part of the background check process?

No because it's worthless. Anyone who cares will lie and it would be impossible to enforce or verify the truth. The people who are dumb enough to tell the truth only end up stripping their own liberties.

Any MSE that would produce clinically verifiable results requires an educated practitioner and time. This is a very inconvenient process when you just want to buy a gun.

You also have to consider that there is no psychiatric exam that produces guaranteed results. At best, items like the Mood Disorder Questionnaire or the YMRS or even complex hundreds-of-questions inventories like the MMPI can only suggest at, not screen for any diagnosis. Ditto for MRI scans.

>Valium and Adderall for narcolepsy.

Isolating a subnetwork within the U.S. is very possible. Isolating a network outside from the U.S. is nearly impossible. The whole point of the internet is to ensure connection redundancy. If he cuts one connection to an arab ISP for example, that ISP will still have several connection to other ISPs who in turn have a connection to the U.S. and the data will just be routed through them.
