Why didn't CD caddies in general take off like they should have? Whether you use discs or not anymore doesn't matter, this is clearly a superior method of usage that should have taken root when the medium was biggest.

Things like UMD and Minidisc are great for durability, who doesn't want a format that can last longer?

I think they got rid of it when disks where made out of (somewhat) durable plastic, to cut down manufacturing costs
>>
>>51873497
Because they cost more to make and ship.
Also discs are easier to break so customers will buy the same media over and over again.

tl;dr $$$$$$
>>
They did it to make discs easier to scratch so you would buy more discs.

That's the clear answer, but it still frustrates me quite a lot. Its such a better way of using discs.

I remember back in the 90s when I saw my uncles CD player with the Caddie. Thought it was some star trek shit

The feel of inserting a caddie, umd, CD, it doesn't matter, it just feels amazing.
>>
which kind of apple machine is that?
i dont remember any apple 2 variant using caddy cd rom
>>
>>51873565
honestly? because caddies broke easier than the underlying disk did
if you applied the slightest pressure accidentally it could crack or the two sides could pull apart
which could render the whole thing unusable and break your drive
>>
>>51873614
Same goes for jewel cases, UMD's thankfully don't really have that issue if you aren't a complete mong. I swear every time I find a used UMD game I want somewhere its been completely scratched to shit.

How the fuck do normies do that? Its like they try hard as hell just to not take care of their shit.
>>
>>51873497
what you on nigga, caddies are horrible and having a caddy for each disk is retarded and drives cost up.

Centris 650. My first computer. So many good times playing Space Junkie, Asterax, Space Invaders, Dinosaur Safari, Kid Pix
>>
>>51873497
I still use them, and I remember exactly why they didn't take off.

Caddies are fucking annoying, they break, get lost, and take up more space than they have to.

Not a system, it's an AppleCD SC, I believe the first generation.

Because they're bulky, and you don't get to look directly at and touch the cool reflective surface.

I was pretty shocked when DVDs came around and didn't have any kind of caddy. You don't often rent music (CDs), but you DO rent movies. VHS tapes were quite durable. I imagined a future where every time you rented a movie, it would be scratched to shit.

And, as it turns out, half the time it was.

They were kinda neat, but a waste of plastic and metal.

They were little more than a disk tray. You could stick DVD or Blu-Ray in these assuming the drive accepts caddies.

funfact: it costs more to make the shitty jewel case a CD usually ships in than the CD itself.
>>

the answer is "it cost too much", but for the consumer, not the manufacturer. If you have more than a handful of discs then you have to buy a ton of caddies to protect them. most people didn't do that and then just swapped discs in and out of caddies, so that they didn't have to buy those hundred caddies. this defeats the whole purpose, so everyone collectively said "lets just do away with those things, polycarbonate is tough enough"
