Maybe it's that he uses function for something this simple.
But this totally makes sense, compiler will inline such a function for optimization and it's possible he will want to expand this function in the future(maybe these unsigned long long are in fact packed ints/bytes and will be replaced with more accurate method / SIMD asm optimization)
