I love my Linux desktop. I find it incredible how all this software written by people all over the world is pieced together to form such a functional system. How can we all help make Linux better?

You need to abandon all rational thought and have no sense of how human beings use a computer. Make sure your UI has three non-descriptive buttons as an absolute maximum. Also make those buttons larger than Texas.

I've never really been interested in games but I see where you're coming from. If the userbase went up then corporations wouldn't mind supporting it, but so many people care about games that it's kind of a chicken and egg situation.

Start paying people for their time and code rather than brainwashing mentally vulnerable in to pissing their lives away in the "fight for freedom" would be a good start, also it would mean a lot of broken shit could get fixed.

Not only kernel development, a great amount of the OSS projects are written by paid developers.

Chromium, WebKit, Qt, Firefox, OpenJDK, IntelliJ, MySQL, .NET (which is open-source now too).

I myself have been paid to write on OSS software (for a network monitoring tool). Open sourcing your tools is a great way for companies to get a big user-base without having to spend anything on marketing or sales, its a viral form of distribution that works on its own and pays off. Even Microsoft has realized this by now.

There is also literally nothing wrong with enjoying what you do and coding on a project you like in your free time.

Nothing on linux is best in class, usually the worst in class, and nothing ties together at all because the devs are antisocial. Exception is the OS itself for server use. If you use it for desktop you are down syndrome

As someone who has only ever used Windows and has tried to use Linux for about 4 days now, I just don't see how anyone could be expected to pick up a distro and run with it without considerable knowledge beforehand.

I don't know shit about text editing, scripts, or terminals and the whole root file system seems purposefully obtuse. I just don't see how your average person can make that switch unless they've got time on their hands and are willing to dig through forum posts on google to resolve basic issues with functionality that Windows doesn't have.

I mean the vast majority of people who have exclusively used Windows have at most done basic things in cmd and then to have the terminal thrown at you is jarring to say the least.
>>
>>51839188
>I don't know shit about text editing, scripts, or terminals and the whole root file system seems purposefully obtuse.
shitposter here.

acutally it's the opposite. the windows registry system is purpousfully obtuse. the linux file metaphor is everything is a file. the system configuration is the same as the jpeg you just posted. it's just a file somewhere, in a specfic directory, waiting to be edited or read. that's simpler
>>

>>

>I don't know shit about text editing
literally like notepad
>scripts
If you can write down a series of commands to be performed in order you're already scripting. Just execute the file and you're good to go.
>terminals
superior to cmd in every conceivable way
>the whole root file system seems purposefully obtuse
Windows actually has a single root filesystem under the hood these days, it just hides it because retards are used to drive letters.
>>
>>51839266
they point is you initially have to google search everything to find out what commands you have to use. And at then start there will be lots of learning through failure. And for what goal? there is no reason to go though all that to competently use an OS that has no software.

I made the post that that guy is responding to.

I'd like to switch to exclusivley using linux because of concerns I have with being supported on my Microsoft. I like the "philosophy" as well and the community, from what I've seen of it anyways seems nice. I like how it's constantly moving forward.

Yeah it sucks dick, and it feels like I've jumped into a pool of acid at times, but I feel like it will be worth it in the end.

Maybe I should just switch from Debian 8.2 to Mint or something, I don't know.

the philosophy of linux is good. The community are antisocial loser though who deny any issues that new switcher have with the platform. There is no software on it either. I'll switch when it's the best. at the moment it's the worst

You don't need a terminal for regular usage, just install any flavor of ubuntu and use the software center or the GUI for installing things. Even my little sister has been using Ubuntu for years now and she can handle it well.

Guides and tutorials will give you terminal commands cause its easier to follow than creating side-long pictured step-by-step guides describing which GUI element to click. Just make sure that you don't copy-paste code from non-trustable sources, but that should be a given like not executing shady .exes on Windows.
>>
>>51838992
that will never hapoen because of the GPL

>>51839456
what i think he meant is use osx to see how sweet it could never be as long as it's being developed by amateurs (by definition)

Linux: good not great
>>
>>51838910
It's not that hard to understand. If Linux and corporations offered more game support, the userbase would skyrocket. No doubt about it.
>>
>>51839497
It would take a long time tho since most people game on windows doubt a game dev would focus on linux.
>>
>>51839497
there's already been a big push for it through Steam, and there are a surprising amount of big games that get Linux ports. But if the AAA studios don't launch their titles with Linux support then it isn't happening.
>>
>>51839497
uh sure. what if developers asked to be compensated for all the work they poured into making all that compatibility?

i know i'd want compensation. it takes a long time to get it right. do you think it's just magic? that we just sit around, and if we type on the keyboard enough games will start happening? drivers will just manifest themselves and be compatible with every nth degree of hardware and possible hardware combinations?

the only reason mac osx and windows are starting to be free is the corporations have matured enough that they don't need to charge for the purchase of the os to recuperate their expenses.
>>
>>51839325
Also remember that this can only be completed on a think pad laptop.
>>
>>51839497
nobody gives a shit about games anymore. they are all the same exact shit. VR will reset the entire gaming industry and Windows current gaming dominance won't count for shit, in the VR era.
>>
>>51839516
I've been waiting for a good tsw linux port for a while they keep saying they will do it but it hasn't happened. I've noticed that a lot of devs say they will port to linux but never do it.
>>
>>51839516
that will never happen for these reasons

>OpenGL is shit
>there are too many variations of linux desktop api to make a user interface for, and GTK is shit as well. cocoa or gtfo
>too many file systems to support
>too many kernels to support
