What's the nastiest virus you've ever encountered?

2 days ago my pc had a nasty virus/problem:
- internet didn't connect by itself as usual
- The wifi icon was nowhere to be found.
- When I entered network connections via other ways it would say: "this folder is empty".
- Cable internet connection always displayed a red X and also didn't work.
- I couldn't change my video settings through the right click menu. No window would pop up when I tried.
- The task manager would close itself after about 10 seconds.
- I tried a variety of options from the win10 boot menu: windows recovery said there was a problem with one of my external drives. I removed them, and it claimed it was another drive that wasn't even in my pc at the time. It recommended me to run chkdsk /r. When I got back to windows it said windows recovery has been disabled.
- "windows reset" claimed it couldn't continue without a clear reason why
- Other options didn't work, or weren't possible.
I felt blocked at every turn, and I soon realized a format was my only option.

tell me about your glorious battles with only the most horrid monstrosities

I've not once gotten a computer virus, but bumping for interest.

Gentoo also doesn't have video games
>>
Had a ransomware once, good thing nothing I do is important
>>
I once had this deeply entrenched suite of software that tracked everything I typed and sent it to a remote server. It was also using up an entire gigabyte of RAM and automatically downloading/installing new components without my permission, even after I tried to remove them. I fixed it by removing Windows 10.

This meme is annoying as fuck. It's the best windows since xp. It looks good, is chill to use, etc. I'm very content with it.

I got used to re-formatting

Depends on if it encrypts other drives too (and what on them, since it can't just blindly encrypt everything unless they wanna risk making you unbootable and thus unable to pay if you tried rebooting to get rid of it) and if it can somehow redundantly hide itself on other drives to emerge again (though it would still require somehow executing those copies after moving to a clean system)
>>
>>51830998
I used to have this, when I was using a free computer given by the government. All I did was alt ctrl del and closed it. Then used malwarebytes to remove it. The virus was similar to that one

Back in jurassic dial-up era they would use your modem to dial pay per minute numbers and get your phone bill in the $1000s. Worse than cryptolocker.

Fucking humans. Humans are the most nastiest virus you'll ever encounter on this dirty planet.

Work in repairs. Get laptop. Apparently keyboard fucking borked and it's slowing down/

Open it up.

Fucking cat hair everywhere. Cat hair under the keys. Oh my fucking god. Open up the laptop case. Cat hair in there.

Nope. Not my job.

A military-grade Chinese botnet that was on a machine a friend bought at a pawn shop. I fought with it off and on for roughly two weeks before finally giving up and reinstalling.

Why not just wipe it? Why not chuck it off a bridge since the BIOS was probably compromised too?
>>
The nastiest one i got was when i was 14 that would fork porn until my hard drive filled and crashed the pc. I had to manually delete the folders, but selecting more than about 15 at a time would crash the thing. It would make 2/3 of the folders I deleted by the time I got rid of the first set.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CIH_%28computer_virus%29

CIH, also known as Chernobyl or Spacefiller. Got this beast back in 1998, wiped my drive.

Today I could probably just run a recovery on the disk but I didn't know much back then.

I used to get viruses all the time when I was 17 and downloaded literally everything off of limewire. Haven't really had to deal with that since then
>>
I had a bad one through our old family computer that's no longer with us. It was a Vista downgraded to XP and I spent too much time looking at porn and other stupid shit. Don't know how it was initially infected but it got to the point where I couldn't do anything. I had a vicious malware that would close everything after a few seconds and told me I wasn't allowed because it was malware. Even WMP was being considered malware. I had a screaming rage fit with it and eventually reinstalled Vista in order to restore peace in the galaxy.

Vundo trojan, completely fucked over the then-family computer OS-wise. That said, I do credit it for my diving into the world of Linux head-first, so there's that.

Only semi-related, but what's a good free antivirus program?
I've heard Avast is pretty good, should I go with that?

I had DarkComet a few years ago and completely fucking missed it. I went looking through my appdata folder and there was a folder blatantly labeled "dclogs". I opened it and it had .txt files keylogging every keystoke for the past few months.

Needless to say I changed every password I had.
