Is there a good quality small compact monitor for something like a raspberry pi?

All the ones on amazon seem to have kinda pretty shitty ratings

My dad wants a raspberry pi and ive got all this stuff ready to check out with but i cant figure out what to actually display it on

Also is this case and these tiny heatsink fans possibly a bad idea somehow, should i go with a case with a fan built in it?

Here's the fan

It's tiny, looks like it fits flush over the cpu, and it has decent ratings, 4.5/5 by like a dozen people I think
>>
Literally every 7 inch monitor either shows up DOA on like 1 in 5 people's doorsteps or costs like $350 and is only reviewed by one person

The fuck

I don't want one of these loose screens either, I need it to atleast stand up but I'm finding nothing

Fuck this is about all I can find but its a little big and expensive

http://www.amazon.com/BacchaBox®-10-1-Monitor-Composite-Inputs/dp/B00V7GKSZI/ref=sr_1_1?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1449917601&sr=1-1&keywords=9+inch+monitor
>>
>>51819532
once you start looking at compact monitors, it's assumed you want a display meant for mounting on video cameras, and those ramp up in price very quickly, it's not uncommon to see them range in price from $500-800 or more, so of course displays less than $150 will be rated poorly.
>>
>>51819532
why wouldn't you connect it to a TV/Monitor that already exists.

Also you don't need a fucking fan on 2.5 watt TDP. I have my PI in a closed cupboard without fan running 24/7 and it doesn't even get warm to the touch.
>>
>>51819683
Theres no place for a computer desk really in our house, im just looking for something to fit on his table next to his chair i guess

>you don't need a fucking fan on 2.5 watt TDP

oh lol ok, heatsinks wont hurt though right?

and this only has 3 reviews but i guess ill get this if i cant find anything else

http://www.amazon.com/Sourcingbay-Inch-Monitor-800x480-Built-/dp/B013OOJUVI/ref=sr_1_7?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1449919087&sr=1-7&keywords=7+inch+monitor

These monitors look like they'd barely even stand up on these mounts though, they're do though i guess, right?
>>
>>51819917
i have heatsinks on my rpi's with thermal pads mounted on chips, is alright.. was also thinking of putting fans on them, which i have, but still didnt because im lazy..

as for screens, been looking myself for the couple of months and i still didnt find anything decent.. they are way too expensive, shitty resolution and who knows what quality..

you might want to check the official rpi screen
>>
>>51819427
cute! CUTE!!
>>
I have a couple of those bare monitors. EZ mode is you get some machine screws and duct tape, tape it to a box and you're good to go.

800x480 is fine for media and games. Get the $55 1280x800 ones if you want to browse the web with it.

If your dad is a hank hill type he can probably build a case out of wood. If neither of you are crafty there are some $20 cases or $45 case+screen combos. The hard part tends to be adding speakers.

If you suck my metaphorical internet dick a bit I might take some pictures of my cardboard monitor+speakers setup

Just looked at your link, yeah honestly that looks pretty good. It's mono, but that's fine for 95% of things you'd do with it and it's got a headphone jack for the other 5% when you feel like playing gaems on it.

You can slap together something for cheaper, but it won't be near as convenient or durable. I've seen some $130 1280x800 monitors out there, but I don't think they don't have sound as they seem intended for photography.

Thats a touch screen though. I just want something that stands on its own and maybe has sound

I guess ill get this

>>51820277
Does the headphone jack really matter?

On windows i can easily tell it to output the audio through the line out instead of the HDMI

This one looks better, it has stereo but no headphone out.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00V7FUDFY?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=ox_sc_act_title_2&smid=A3FR1RL2J8IYMV

Im about to check out with all this i think

>>51820167
Yeaaaah.... i just wanna get him something that'l be able to be plugged in and working on christmas day, thats why i got an SD with NOOBS or whatever preinstalled too along with a blank 32gb one. The only doubts he had about all this was how to display it, but i think i found a good way

Im not forgetting anything am i?

This stuff is so cool, especially the wood cases. i wish i looked into this before getting a gaming laptop for work, lol

Dont ask why i had to take a picture, im just in a hurry and it was the quickest way since the nearby open wifi IP is banned
>>
>>51820568
yeah, touch screen, my bad for not pointing it out.. sound is not really a problem, price vs quality is the only issue.. guess i could try hacking a driver to make the resolution go a bit bigger.. but dont feel like paying a bunch of $$ sadly..

That's why I mentioned TV. Just connect the RPI to the TV on HDMI and use a wireless mouse/keyboard if you want to use it as an actual computer.

ebay 3.5" touch is like 13$, 7" is 25$

Holy shit I don't want a touch screen lol

>attaching a shitty low res screen

>basically building a bar of soap with 2002 processing capabilities and screen

Literally why
>>
>>51822311
especially since he would get a Tablet for the same price with more processing power.

also very curious as to how we are clueless. Especially when you could get a Atom Tablet for like $110 which runs circles around a PI

After spending 200 dollars you get this.

A brick with a 240x320 resistive touchscreen, with the performance of a 2005 linux machine.

What a time to be alive
>>
>>51825301
...and since Atom has x86 you can also connect just about anything to it on a powered USB hub. But whatever bro
>>
>>51825301

Or even a cheap chinese Dragontouch tablet, with windows10. No-name, but work flawlessly.
And yes l, you can hack them and install muh linux/freedoms on them
>>
>>51825311

More like 1995.

Crickey mate, what would you do with the extra 120$ ?

Is there anything like a four line display I can use to just see the results from the command line? I've looked at those arduino dot matrix displays, but it seems like a lot of effort, and I don't wanna deal with that shit.
>>
>>51825412

Yes, VNC
>>
https://www.raspberrypi.org/products/raspberry-pi-touch-display/
They sell a shitty touch display to go with your shitty Pi.
>>

You know, there's a button on most keyboards labelled "PrtScr" or something similar you can use to take screenshots
>>
>>51825834
still, this isn't an intel cpu
>>
>>51825214
>>51825301
i dont see your atom or whichever else tablet having a gpio and being able to do all the shit pi can
>>
>>51825542
Ya know, if I could get a whole pi set up, screen included, for under $65, id use it as a little update box type thing. Id run a script to tell me the weather, show twitter posts, things like that
>>
>>51825965
is gpio something OP's dad is ever even going to fucking use?
>>
>>51826072
yes if you want to use your sensors to see when your moms on period
>>
>>51825834
i overclock my model B with just a little passive heatsink

might be a different story on the version 2 pi's though, being quadcores
>>
>>51826256
The pi does not need a heat sink. There may be situation where you'd want to have a heatsink, but you'd know if that was the case. You don't 'accidentally' put a pi on the ISS, in a closed container in a desert or inside a gameboy next to heat-sensitive components.
>>
>>51826256
what >>51826380 said

i have 2 heatsinks on my rpi2 which is overclocked on 1ghz and the temp doesnt go over 58 when multitasking on it.. depending on what you do but you dont really need it
>>
>>51825966

>>
>>51826380
the sinks were $3, and the pi is in a cabinet that gets regular sunlight on it, and it's running kodi 24/7 (not playing things all the time, but just running kodi is a bit of a cpu strain for it)
i figure i'd rather get $3 heatsinks now and be sure it won't die early, than have it die early and have to buy a new pi, and heatsinks
>>
>>51826380
Just clock it to the max and breathe in as much of the magic smoke as you can, it's healthy for you.
>>
>>51826425
Sure. Like a bunch of widgets but on a dedicated machine that he only has to glance over at instead of getting out his phone or, if he's on the phone, stop what he's doing.
