How does /g/ feel about Chrome/Chromium OS?

stahp! xD

It's pretty damn secure. And thanks to the trend of everything being on the web these days, you can still be quite productive, depending on what you need to do
>>
Its comfy

all it needs is an actual package manager besides chromebrew

Is the Asus C300MA any good? I can get one for $250

http://www.amazon.com/Acer-Chromebook-11-6-Inch-CB3-111-C670-Celeron/dp/B00MMLV7VQ

/g/'s rated second best chromebook, only 2nd to the C720
>>
>>51815551
I have a c720. The dual core Intel 2955U makes a huge difference, compared to the ARM chromebooks, like the Samsung Series 3
>>
nto counting budget, is the Dell 13 one good? it looks really nice
>>
>>51815700
It is, its processor is a few steps above some of the other celerons, and its cost is heavily attributed to its build quality.
>>
>>51815800
Also forgot to mention, battery life = through the fucking roof
>>
some can be librebooted, that's a plus i guess.

wouldn't use it though. only use chrom* for sites i don't want to fiddle with on ff. policeman/noscript gets old fast.
>>
>>51815491
They were on sale for $100, but I was too late
>>
>>51815897
i bought 3 from bestbuy :^)

One for me so i can now have two, one for my aunt and one for my great grandma
>>
>>51815923
Hows the build quality? I noticed a lot of reviews saying the screen died after a few months
>>
>>51815941
Ive had the one im posting with for well over a year now, its been just fine. It feels light and a bit flimsy i have to admit, and i dont like that the cover on the back of the screen can be compressed a little bit, but its held up to normal use, dings, drops, having stuff on top of it, etc
>>
> no gaymes
>>
>>51816228
shut up feg
>>
>>51815191
Hey. I am looking for chromebook I can dualboot with linux. I only use laptop for webdev and webbrowsing (no gayman). However I would like to get the best screen possible.
What get?
>>
>>51816341
With crouton you can use linux on any intel chromebook, its a bit buggy on arm chromebooks.

Best screen possible though? Anything HP, Lenovo or Dell. If money is no issue, Google Pixel.
>>

Get Toshiba Chromebook 2, 2015 model

It has a fucking great 1080P IPS screen for a $300 device

Go for the Celeron

I made a mistake and I got the i3 version for my mother.

It gets hot and battery doesn't last more than 4 hours in mid-brightness level. It's terrible for a chromebook. My $200 Dell Chromebook 11 can last more than ten hours with single charge.
>>
>>51816464
Wow, this is cheap anon. I have like 1k quid to spend, I will seriously think about getting one.
How does the CPU compare to 2nd gen i5? Asking straight since I don't want to downgrade.
>>
>>51815191
are there a lot of apps for chromeos? can you do programming and dev work on it? it seems kinda neat..
>>
>>51815191
dumbed down
>>
>>51816559
i3 chip on that thing is fast enough. When I ran Octane V2, it's score was almost 20K

My i5 3570K rig gets a score like 27K

But it gets hot somehow, and it has a fan, I'd not expect a chromebook to get warm and noisy, It was a disappointment for me.
>>
>>51816603
Thanks anon. I will consider the baytrail one as I only run ide and browser + maybe docker on linux.
This seems like a great machine
>>
>>51816576
It has the whole chrome web store for the browser + a bunch of shit for just chromeOS as far as applications go.

And if you find something ChromeOS cant do, you can use Crouton to make what i can describe as kind of a hybrid between a partition boot and VM of most popular linux distros
>>
>>51816645
thats really cool dude, thanks
>>
>>51816645
>>51815389

hey! how did you get the ASCII Chrome logo and system details on terminal?
>>
>>51816341
Hi, I've been using mine for the past year, and I'm very happy with it. I got an HP 14 for the screen and the 4gb ram. I run chrome OS for most of my browsing/netflix. I run elementary os on crouton to use Skype, R and LaTeX. It works flawlessly. I like crouton but if you really go for it and wipe Chrome OS entirely and set up the specially tailored distros that were made for Chromebooks (look up Hugegreenbug's eOS Freya distro) I reckon it'd run even better. But I am too much of a pussy for that.

Screenfetch
>>
>>51816683
Thanks mate. Does the linux gets laggy on 1080p without scaling? :o
>>
>>51816680
what >>51816697 said, but you need to do it manually and you have to be developer mode
>>
>>51816697
How do you get screenfetch on chromeos?
>>
>>51816736

Go into developer mode, then go to the crosh by pressing ctrl+alt+t, then just use the normal install method you would find online for installing screenfetch on linux
>>
>>51816736
I followed this guide:
http://tuxtweaks.com/2013/12/install-screenfetch-linux/

It didnt work before i used crouton at least once, and you have to be in developer mode
>>
>>51816736
Developer mode is usually Esc+Refresh+Power, unless you have a physical switch for it.
>>
Whats the benefit of a chromebook over just a normal laptop? Besides the cheap ones being like $100
>>
How can you guys deal with 11.6??? I feel like I need at least 13.3inch to be able to type semi-comfortably. That's the main reason I want an Asus c300, cheapest for its size range
>>
>>51816768
what's chrome's version of apt-get?
>>
>>51816792
Depends on what you want to use your laptop for. If you just use it to browse the web, then go with a chromebook. It also has online apps for word processing, etc, through google, so you don't have to worry about incompatible formats. It's basically a college student's dream.

>>51816835
It should have apt-get.
>>
Pixel LS user here. This shit is great. Kept a MBA around in case I needed it but I haven't so far.

Just got a Pixel C in and I wish the thing ran Chrome OS. Android is garbage by comparison.
>>
>>51816859
What app did you use for your terminal out of the browser?
>>
>>51816819
i dont mind the screen size when its nice and small and compact, its ok for what i do, im not exactly watching video on it from across the room
>>51816792
they are pleasant to use, thats all i can personally say about them
ive never had hardware or software issues with mine, it doesnt get hot, it doesnt have a fan or an HDD to make any noise at all, its comfy and friendly to interact with, it has a 3 second boot time and best of all
>its not windows
I HATED windows, i cannot stand some of the shit that windows put me through, always with small itty bitty problems that just drove me up the fucking wall all the time, and windows 8/10 botnet was way too far for me as far as my privacy goes, so i moved to the chromebook.
Yes, i know
>google
>privacy
ChromeOS is designed so barebones-d that the amount of botnet in it is just from the chrome browser, and any tracking the browser does can be turned off.

It makes me happy, its a stress-free computer. Ive played around with things like HP streams and other netbooks and none of them were as pleasant to use as chromebooks of any kind.
>>
>>51816871
just use ctrl+alt+t, and it'll take you to the crosh, then just enter "shell" without quotes, and you have a fully functional terminal. Although I believe you will need to go into developer mode to get it.
>>
>>51816835
>>51816859

Out of curiousity, what is battery life on a chromebook? Does the OS make much of a difference?

pic not related
>>
>>51816877
Wow anon. You make me pull the trigger on Toshiba Chromebook 2 even more. I hated windows, I started using OSX at work which made me reconsider buying an apple laptop but fuck no for 1000 quid laptop.
>>
>>51816898
Depends on the brand, my acer cb3 gets about 7-8 hours on med/high brightness while doing normal browsing, watching videos, music etc
Some of the Dell ones can get 13 hours or more though, just as a few samsung models only get 4-6 hours
>>
>>51816898
my acer c720 has an average battery life of 8-9 hours when I have say, 3 tabs running different sites.
>>
>>51816877
>windows 8/10 botnet was way too far for me as far as my privacy goes, so i moved to the chromebook.

>jumping from one botnet to another
>can`t find fixes and/or workarounds for annoyances in windows

You should try iPads, I hear their for idiots, I mean idiot proof
>>
>>51816891
Thank you very much! I love my Chromebook. The portability factor alone makes it worth it.
>>
>>51816923
id rather be part of the google botnet than the microsoft botnet, at least google wont entirely fuck me over all at once, just slowly over time

i dont want a workaround, i dont want a fix, i want it to work as intended, i want to be able to throw in a new ssd and have it automatically download and install the drivers without me having to spend 4 hours on google trying to get the _actual_ right drivers and install them myself while windows keeps telling me to not do that

I also have a 2nd gen iPad, its a nice machine, its held up well, i recommend buying one now that theyre not too expensive being so old.
>>
>>51816792
All your files and settings are uploaded to the cloud automatically. Even if your chromebook is stolen/broken/forgotten/burns etc, just get another one, login with your username and all your stuff will be there.

And as you said, shit is cheap for what you get. These devices have a long battery life, they are lightweight, and they don't get hot, -my dell chromebook does not even get warm- also they don't have mechanical drives so you can toss them around they can take some beating

>>51816898

I get +10 hours of battery life on my $200 Dell Chromebook 11 if I reduce the brightness of screen to half
>>
>>51816952
>at least google wont entirely fuck me over all at once

oh yes they will, just wait until an update to chrome OS makes your fisher price machine unusable
>>
>>51815700
I bought one a few days ago and I love it. I nuked chromeos and installed Gallium. Basically no issues with anything aside from a strange interaction between the mute media key and pulse, which wasn't too hard to fix.
>beautiful screen
>near-perfect hardware compatibility
>battery lasts 10-11 hours at medium brightness/wifi on
>great build quality
I peeled off the Chrome logo sticker on the front but there's no easy way to get the grey "chrome" lettering off. Currently looking for some sort of reasonable way to cover/obscure that.
>>
>>51817009
updates are installed all the time whenever you stop using the machine, and there hasn't been a single time that an update has rendered my machine unusable.
>>
>>51816966

I got a Cr-48 when Google was giving them away for free. The laptop itself was awesome, but ChromeOS was meh.
