since school is over I'm going to try reviving one or more of the info-graphs/lists that have died. I know it's been said many times before and there are probably people who made or are making efforts to do the same but it really should be done. filling out the request form is good in theory but in practice it's mostly become shitposting fuel. I think I'll start with the <$200 one since I did one if the $100 guides back in the day.

1300e a good price for a used DAC2 HGC? What's the synergy rating I will get with my HD 800s?
>>
>>51813238
DAC2 is bright, HD800 is transparent but it's often recommended to use a warm DAC for better synergy so it wouldn't sound sterile and analytical.

Yes it's completely true listening to the HGC is a "mind blower". It took all of of a few seconds to realize I had never heard the level of musical detail/imagining/accuracy and approximately 1 minute to decide the DAC2 HGC was "a keeper" - even at $2K. I am staggered by the amount of musical detail/accuracy I failed to hear prior to my purchase. 3 weeks after my 1st listen, I continue to discover all of the unlocked musical details and beauty "buried" by inferior DACs. On the negative side, I am now able to clearly discern quality differences between iTunes purchased music (256 Kbps) and music ripped from my CDs (lossless). Maybe Apple will wake up soon and offer lossless purchases/downloads.

>>51817120
CAL is bassier, warmer, cheaper build. pro80 has a better build and is closer to neutral, but iirc it has a very long fixed cable so not the best for portable use.

>>51817414
80 ohm sounds better and it can still be driven without a dedicated amp, as long as you're not using a weak as fuck player and you like to listen very loud.
>>
>>51817414
32 ohm are generally considered to be terrible and were just made as a compromise to get them working on more shitty, weak sources.

What sounds better about the 32 ohm? I heard that the 80 ohm sound shitty without an amp, and im playing from an iphone/laptop/integrated sound. Also the 32s have a 5 foot cable instead of a long ass 9 foot one but I'll get the 80s if they sound significantly better

etymotic are love/hate. some people love the mids and highs, and many claim they are neutral. they're not. they are very balanced for IEMs but they're also bright-sounding and lacking in bass. yes they isolate very well but you have to insert triple flange tips deep into your ears which personally I find way too uncomfortable. you'll have to try them for yourself. also the er4pt are the ones eveyone likes.
>>
>>51817459
What specifically is shit about the 32 ohm?
>>
>>51817664
Bass is boomier and less controlled, midrange is all over the place, treble is more or less the same though. Also I think the 32ohm have leather pads like the 80 M instead of the comfy velour pads but I'm not 100% sure.
>>
I know literally nothing about amps.
For a DT880 600 ohm, would I need something expensive in order to drive it on a desktop?
If so, I could drop down to a DT880 250 ohm, drive it with a cheaper amp, and notice barely any difference in sound compared to the 600 ohm, right?
>>
>>51817706
Get an O2 and you're set for life.
>>
>>51817680
Damn, I was gonna get the 32 ohm for the shorter cable and replace the leather pads. Do you think ill need an amp for the 80 ohm driving from shitty onboard sound and an iphone 6 plus?
>>
>>51817706
As long as you have something with a low enough Zout it shouldn't make a huge difference. If you had an O2 like >>51817729 mentioned, that 0.54 Zout would already make the 250ohm more than plenty as far as damping goes, 600 would barely be a difference.

Now if you had something like a Bottlehead Crack or a headphone output from an integrated receiver, you'd want the 600 ohm model more.

>>51817733
Shouldn't be a problem from the iPhone assuming they haven't completely fucked up since the 5 (which had very good onboard). The 'shitty onboard sound' will depend on how old your motherboard is really. Any modern mobo will have a good realtek codec (like the based ALC1150) and you could easily get away with the 80ohm model.

From the engineer who created the O2 amp

http://nwavguy.blogspot.com.br/2011/02/headphone-impedance-explained.html

Short answer: Buy whatever version you want, the sound difference is basically placeboo by audiophiles. Even among themselves, they find the difference minimal

I would buy the 80ohms version, which can be driven by basically anything out there. Otherwise, the best case would be the 250 ohms one.
>>
>>51817757
I just did some research and I think I'm gonna go with the 80ohm. Is 170$ a good price or should I wait to see if it drops?
>>
>>51818089
They've been $125 or so from Adorama so it may be worth waiting. Not sure if that was the 80 or 250ohm model though.

Hello /g/.
What are some good noise cancelling headphones
worth buying this holidays.
>>
>>51818639
Noise cancelling is a meme. Decent closed headphones can isolate noise well enough without the extra hundred dollars. Because of the higher price of noise cancelling headphones, the sound quality doesn't really make them worth buying and the noise cancelling itself, though it works to an extent, isn't really 'HOLY SHIT I'M IN A NEW DIMENSION' good.

In any case, if you really insist on buying a pair then go for the QC25.
>>
holy shit why are DACs and amps so expensive? I can afford a HD800 (listened to some and absolutely loved the comfort as well) but I don't want to get a shitty experience since from what I have read online is that the hd800s don't work well with some amps.

Any recommendations for a DAC/amp combo that doesn't break the bank? (under 600)

Your best bet should be the Yoga CD 880. They are rebranded to various names: Brainwavz HM5,Fischer Audio FA-003,Digitech Pro,Lindy Premium, NVX XPT100. Take your pick, because they're all the same headphone.

The cheapest to you should be the Brainwavz version (140$ with worldwide shipping) or the Digitech Pro version (100$ + shipping)

If you like neutral headphones, they are worth it. They also have a really large soundstage for a closed headphone. Really clear and transparent sounding, people were paying up to $200 when there were only Fischer Audio as a worldwide option to get them.

Something thats good for a wide range of things as a starting point would be cool, but as long as it's got replaceable cords i'm open to all suggestions.

oh, I supposed you were talking about amazon pricing, didn't know about this site.

what is your opinion on the m40x's? another reason i'm considering the m40x's is because I'd probably use them for portable if my IEM's break (which is very likely to happen)
>>
I want to make my HD600 sound better. Would you recommend a Little Dot MK IV? So far I've been driving them on my laptop (Realtek ALC889) and they sound so bad it's not even funny: ridiculously narrow soundstage, unaudible bass, dry mids and unnatural treble. Fuck, I bought them because all people here were saying that they would sound great even without an amp...

I can only compare to AD700x, as my friend had that one, the AD900x i only did hear them once in a store.

I know that the AD open phones family in general are know for their weak bass, and it was the first noticeable thing i heared on both phones.

They also, do not have a removable cable if you're into that, of course you can mod it, but the process it's not that simple.
>>
>>51821099
So the HP200 are just flat out better? If so i'm gonna jump on a pair for sure.
>>
>>51821118

HP200 main competitors are the sennheiser hd 600/650 family.

While the AD900x would be the Sennheiser HD558/598 family.

So yeah, they would be a notch better.

Just bought my DT990s (250Ω). Sound great, but a little lower in volume than my M50s.

Should I buy an amp? I've no other onboard help, so my motherboard/keyboard (when plugged in there) are powering them currently

I've only one complaint, this could be OCD more than anything, but part of the left ear looks rough, rugged, as though it's been rubbed. It's only a small section, but my paranoia makes me think they were used previously (bought brand new). Should I return them for another pair over this?

Schiit has a lot of hype, but they're pretty on the level. Have you ever read the descriptions on their site itself? And even their TOTL stuff is a fraction of what other brands can cost. They chase a lot of audiophile gimmicks though to get that audiofool money.
>>
>>51821552
i haven't checked their website, no. i just vaguely recollect reading some criticism of their audiophoolery in old issues of the audio critic and thought maybe they were up to the same shit with their amps. but good for them if they actually produce decent amps.

probably still not as good or affordable as o2 though.
>>

The low hanging, or the marked pad? It's not a massive issue, just being picky.

Stop reading headfi. Then, educate yourself on amplification. The main thing a tube amp will provide you with is harmonic distortion, which is the last thing you want. The ''warmth'' is actually rolled off treble because the tube amp in question most likely has a skewed frequency response.

There's hardly any broken images of HD558/HD598/HD600/HD650. Let's not forget that the HD600 has been in production since the 90s.

Also not a single HD6xx owner ever reported their headphone cracking, snapping or being broken, while many DTxxx owners complained about theirs cracking.

And lastly, post revision HD558/HD598 are extremely durable and do not crack.

Sennheiser is always committed to improving their headphones even if they are literal Jews with pricing. They've fixed HD5xx's cracking, they're gonna fix the HD800.

Meanwhile Beyerdynamic hasn't addressed their gimbal cracking issue and their T1 V2 is a complete fucking joke.

Hello, first time visiting this thread.
Not sure if this is appropriate here, but I'm looking to buy a set of wireless ear buds. I'd like something with a neutral sounds signature, or slightly warm. I mainly listen to EDM, Oldies, and classic rock. I want ear buds because I wear them in the climbing gym and extra bulk is a negative. However if headphones are significantly better in quality perhaps I'd just stick to cheap ear buds in the gym. My price range is about $150 to $200, can anyone offer some recommendations?

32 ohm isn't even necessarily louder without an amp. With high source impedance, it can be quieter than the 250 ohm due to a lot of voltage lost in the source.
