Intended for users of all levels, including absolute beginners

If you are serious about switching to Linux, use it exclusively for 2 weeks, avoid booting to windows for that period of time, or you are likely to start retreating back to windows instead of getting used to linux as your new home and working on making it feel comfortable

You can safely experience installation process and the basic usage through a virtual machine

suse is trying to go for that kind of stuff
openSUSE is famouse for its yast and GUI for all configuration

But what kind of server do you have in mind? Because right tool for right task, web stuff linux is the real deal, databases and WMs too, but managing desktops,.. you really have nothing comparable to the windows active directory, your own scripts doing stuff can get you in view of its features but nowhere close
>>
>>51811186
You can literally throw any distro on a machine and call it a "server"

GNU/Linux is not restricted to "editions" in the manner of Windows Server. Setting up ssh and vnc works all the same on a desktop or server edition of the same distro.

The free alternatives mentioned are highly customizable, modular and integrates to the system better than sublime-text.

be honest with yourself, it is not comparable with sublime, not in features, not in customizablity, not in user base. Being open source dont make something automaticly better, it just make it open source which is no doubt preferable but only if other aspects match up. This goes for kate and leafpad and mousepad and whatever other edditors are out there

Atom will probably go there and maybe even in front of sublime, problem with atom why its not there already is the fucking slow startup and its whole nature of being chromium turned in to a text editor.. fucking hell they had chance on making open source sublime clone and they cock it up with nodejs :[

Suggest Gedit
>not in features, not in customizablity, not in user base.
A general purpose text editor does not really need to be heavily featured or a large userbase. (i.e. notepad). Gedit is more customizable than sublime-text and it has forks. It has plugin manager to easily set your preferred plugins.
>Atom will probably go there and maybe even in front of sublime
Atom is worse than sublime-text. People use it because of it's aesthetics, honestly speaking.
IDE: Geany / KDevelop
Text-editor: Gedit / Kate
These two are of different categories if you ask me

Hello /flt/

I'm using linux (debian with GNOME) for the first time and I'm at a loss as to how to download things.

I have Synaptic, but I'm just not understanding this repository stuff. I look around for certain programs/software on google to try to find a repository that has what I'm looking for and I usually either

a) don't find it
b) find it and have zero fucking clue as to how to install it

I feel like I'm missing something incredibly basic here. I search forums and the like, and I just can't find a simple explanation as to how to do this stuff. All I see is terminal stuff which I've been trying to understand how to do for the past half hour to no avail. I don't know what the fuck a frontend is, an apt, or any of that stuff. Hell, I even just reinstalled Debian to give me a clean slate since I don't know what I inevitably fucked up.

All I've managed to figure out how to do is to type su, followed by my root password to become a root something or other.

Any help? I'm sure I'm making shit more difficult than it actually is.
>>
>>51815085
literally use Synaptic to find the package you're looking for
>>
>>51815085
Debian comes with aptitude, which is a command line GUI for package managing, preinstalled (just open a terminal and type aptitude).
Basically you use the default repository and download software from there, you only ever need to change repo if you need "unusual software" that is not provided in the standard repo. Think of it as an app store basically.

>>51815477
As of right now I'd like to download various "non-free" stuff, specifically teamspeak, although I still have no clue how.

I've been attempting to add the following repo to my list, although all that I've had happen is synaptic talk about a key that I don't have.

Even then I don't even know what packages this repo includes exactly. All I know is that most of it is probably closed source/non free.

What's the best Linux for making a cozy seen machine? I plan on programming and watching anime.

I use a PC right now, I don't use my desktop at all. I pretty much navigate through my PC using just file explorer. Is there anywhere that I can see glimpses of set ups all the google pics of recommended newb distributions look gross.

I need some help installing numix circle icons in xfce arch

I tried yaourt, it gets stuck looping b/w asking "Edit PKGBUILD ? [Y/n]", "Edit numix-circle-icon-theme.install ? [Y/n]" and "Continue building numix-circle-icon-theme-git ? [Y/n]"

I tried downloading the snapshot from the AUR and using mkpkg -S after extracting it but it fails to install dependencies or something

Finally I got frustrated and downloaded a zip of the github repo and extracted it and placed the icons manually in /usr/share/icons/. This got it to work but only for applications, icons for folders, drives and network are not loading possibly missing also some icons for button in settings are not loading.

Remove the numix-icon-circle you placed manually, then install it from yaourt, the "loop" was probably caused by numix-icon-circle pulling out numix-icon-theme as dependency from AUR, just install it too.

> Is there anywhere that I can see glimpses of set ups

I would say "desktop thread", but I don't think those people even use their PCs. Most distros are highly customizable so just because you don't like the defaults doesn't mean much when it only takes 2 minutes to change to a different background, theme, and item pack.

Pic related is Lubuntu 14.04 with default background and icons. I prefer a 5-minute "tastefully rice job" on my taskbar and 8-pt system font. The following link shows what the default install looks like so you can compare: https://sites.google.com/site/easylinuxtipsproject/_/rsrc/1396112736941/lubuntu/Screenshot-Lubuntu-14_04-desktop-menu.jpg

Also arch and gentoo are memes, and default Ubuntu sucks. Ubuntu derivatives are where it's at for noobs.

Are questions about (neo)vim allowed here?
I've been trying for days, with no luck, to get my old .vimrc working with neovim. For unrelated reasons, I've had to remove vi/vim from my machine and started over with neovim from scratch, but now none of my settings are being carried over.
Currently, I only have a ~/.nvimrc file, but I've seen people say the file is .nvimrc or .neovimrc.
Which one is it? Do i need another directory dedicated to neovim? If someone could explain how to set up a .n(eo)vimrc file from scratch i would be grateful.

How would I go about using two monitors with Debian?

I've my monitor which is 2560x1440, and my tv which is 19020x1080. Monitor is using displayport, tv is using HDMI.

X just broke on my T420 running Arch. Well, it didn't _just_ break or I'm sure it'd be easier to diagnose. Was pairing my wii U Pro Controller and the left analog was moving the mouse so I put the file to fix that in my /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d and then was gonna just restart X, but then I couldn't get back in. Tried making my xinitrc match my desktop's (no issues on my desktop), tried removing my xorg.conf since my desktop doesn't have one apparently, and startx still results in errors. It flashes the nvidia logo and then back to the tty with errors. Here's my log:
http://sprunge.us/LeBX

I was asking for help in the arch linux irc but stopped getting responses pretty quick. I use this computer to watch anime hooked to a 65" TV via dock so I'd really appreciate a fix before it starts delaying anime watching that I do on a regular basis.

So is Mint still the best beginner distro or did someone overtake them? I am not sure if I want to give them or someone else a try.
My old opensuse desktop distro died because I made a dumb mistake, but I played with the idea of changing to another distro anyways. What I liked was Yast but the new Leap looks kind of weird and Tumbleweed made problems when I tried it back then. Got any recommendations?
I mostly used my desktop for browsing and general stuff, used i3 gapps as wm, watched vids with mpv, mpc+ncmpcc with music, weechat and so on.
I dont really care for rolling release but most of the programms forced me to use the new version anyways (like gaps or mpv) so not sure what to make of that.
>>
what do you guys do to protect your privacy on the internet ?

If you've used opensuse, and you were comfortable with it, I don't think you'd need a beginner friendly distro. However, mint definitely still works if you just want an internet machine.

>>
>>51818993
Debian is decent, yeah.

>are wifi drivers default
There's not a straight answer here. I mean, the answer isn't "no", but might not be yes. Debian doesn't allow non-free software by default, so if you have incompatible hardware it will not work out of the box, otherwise everything should work out of the box. Wireless and wired NICs are probably the most common things that need non-free firmware.

I'd recommend Arch over Debian, though. Try out the Architect installer. It's pretty simple and then you'll be on a lot fresher system than Debian would give you. The AUR is also very nice.

What you want may be a tiling window manager. It does a lot more than you're asking, but maybe you'll come to enjoy that.

I suggest i3. Try installing it and booting into it from the login screen instead of cinnamon. It's a bit ugly out of the box but it can be made to look a lot better.

You really shouldn't use anything but dd. I'll answer any questions you have about it if you want. I'll even give you a basic layout and instructions.

sudo dd bs=4M if=/full/path/to/linux.iso of=/dev/sdx; sync

bs is block size, if is input file, of is output file. Replace the x in /dev/sdx with the proper drive letter. To find out which one if your flash drive, run
sudo blkid
and you should see enough info between what it's labeled and what it's formated in to see which one is the flash drive. It should also be the last letter if it was the most recent thing you plugged in.

so if I've got a GNU/Linux iso in my downloads directory and I just opened a new shell in my home directory I would do this

sudo dd bs=4M if=downloads/ArchLinux.iso of=/dev/sdc; sync

I've got two hard drives so my flash drive would be after /dev/sda and /dev/sdb.

Are you saying that popular is not better than unpopular?
that if theres two softwares really close in quality to each other at the start, and the one with huge fanbase that has loads of resources and easy accessible community is not better?
The one where its users worked their asses off to improve it over years created hundreds of 3rd party plugins.. is that not the better one?

Popularity has nothing to do with quality.
The Nazi's were pretty popular in pre-WWII Germany.

Yes.

A good case of this is how Arch is better than Debian. Debian has more users, but Arch has the better wiki, it has the AUR, it has fresher packages, better forums, etc. Both distros are good but there's a clear difference in quality leaning toward Arch being better despite Debian being much more popular. The same is even more true when you compare Ubuntu to Arch, but that's a bit unfair if we're being honest.

Now what I'm not saying is that less popular things are better. I've found frequently that this IS the case, but it's just a coincidence and I won't develop a confirmation bias over it.

As >>51820015 says, there's really just no correlation between popularity and quality.

apples and oranges

Not at all. They're both GNU/Linux distros. I can even compare Debian Unstable specifically to Arch and tell you that the same thing I said is true.

Hello there reddit fag,
Your search for plugins in google and number of subeditors do not count as valid arguments. Clearly, if you are looking to fix your issues in your subreddits instead of the wiki then you are pathetic. Furthermore users do not even need all those 30 plugins, it's a generous to call a fully IDE.
Geany is not proprietary and is very modular. It integrates to linux systems more than sublime-text.
Atom is a piece of garbage designed for webdevs, might as well use VS code.
You are comparing geany to sublime-text, atom or vim only because you care about the aesthetics, be honest to yourself. The fact that you still play video games proves your immaturity. On top of that you retaliated with the same suggestion as me with classic "NO-YOU tripfag".
Please go back to your gayming instead of pretending to be "specialist" in text editors. No one is falling for your SJW propaganda here, do not try to change the topic of discussion.

Correction-
it's generous to call a fully featured IDE

>Popularity has nothing to do with quality.
thats some solid argumentation and switch from the use of the word "better" which implies comparrision to the word "quality"

so what is better
software with 40 plugins or one with 5000 plugins?

>>51820032
shitposting with terrible example and unrpovable claims of quality
popularity means large community
large community can improve more stuff than small community
therefore if software A and software B start identical, but one has much better and active community which results in larger popularity
which will snowball over time, then one software will improve better than the other

go shitposting debian vs arch somewhere else

stopped reading there
some /g/ fag wont be telling people what plugins they want
