Now that release date, and hopefully pre-orders, are imminent, I'm actually getting kind of hype.

I've got like $400 laying around, and my PC should be plenty stronk enough, why wouldn't I pick one up, if only for the porn? Valkyrie looks breddy cool tbf.

Anyone used it yet?
>>
>>51807540
When do preorders start?
>>
>>51807619
Nobody knows yet
>>
I5 3470 or i7 3770 should be enough right?
>>
>>51807635
It's the GPU that matters.
>>
>>51807635
I would think so.

I imagine the biggest factor will be gpu, since it's effectively rendering two 1080p screens. CPU should be like any other game, I would think
>>
I'm hyped as hell, I only have the DK1 and hopefully the upgrade will be huge.

Just want to chill in space.

How's the DK1, man? I heard DK2 isn't much different, but that final product is supposed to be supposed to be a major upgrade

Deliberately purchased a 980ti for Xmas to be in perfect situation for this come Q1. I've been waiting for this tech 15 years.

Between this and star wars im feeling as giddy as my 15yo self.

Wondering if anyone on the Rift wagon is tempted by the Vive, Gear VR or the Morphous?
>>
>>51807794
Isn't it 90hz?
>>
>>51807830
You might be able to enjoy calmer games.

>>51807854
DK1 is 60Hz with a 60ms latency.

>>51807850
Will probably buy all of them, maybe not Morpheous, have they said anything about PC support on that yet?
>>
>>51807781
This may be a dumb question, but does rendering two monitors take twice the VRAM?
>>
>>51807854
Not the DK1. Obviously, it's not really comparable. DK1 was literally made by a small team of 10 people while CV1 is made by a large company of 400.
>>
>>51807850
I'm on the VR bandwagon.

In other words I'm getting every of those. I already have a Gear VR.
>>
>>51807902
Naw it's not a dumb question. Its a good one. Naw though, I don't think it does, it does need more but twice as much I think
>>
>>51807902
It's just one monitor split in half and rendered twice with a slight offset for each eye, so no.

I'm both excited and skeptical of this whole thing.
It all sounds interesting, at the same time I'm afraid it will turn video gaming to just porn, cockpit games, and walking simulators until all the limitations are dealt with.
>>
>>51807989
No.

The DK1 was fully open sourced but only parts of the current SDK are. I don't think any of the hardware is open source on the current version.

Honestly I'm surprised more Chinese DK1 clones haven't showed up. Literally the whole thing was open sourced.
>>
>>51808001
Because Linux users 99% of the time are using laptops bought from bestbuy
>>
>>51808030
So they wouldn't have been able to use VR anyway. Then it becomes a pretty unfair complaint.

Personally, I'm in it for the cinematic experiences. I'll do my "real" gaming on my 2k monitor, but I also want to be on the Frontline for the VR artistic experience. Please, God, let a bunch of avant garde artistic types discover this thing...

I tried the first devkit at some point. The image quality was worse than Google Cardboard with a midrange smartphone, but the orientation sensing and comfort were pretty good even in that version.

If you want true open source, use OSVR.

>>51810316
it's not
initial reviews of the Vive immediately said that what made it stand apart from the rift was the excellent response times and refresh rate. it singlehandedly turned it from a gimmick into VR
>>
>>51810376
You didn't actually understand what the reviews were comparing then.
>>
>>51810403
enlighten me then. what did i misunderstand? as far as I know the Vive atm is literally just an improved version of the rift
>>
>>51810435
The reviews were comparing the Vive to old Rift prototypes. The current version of the Rift is almost exactly the same as the current version of the Vive.
>>
>>51810435
>>51810376
both the consumer versions of the vive and oculus use screens with the exact same resolution and refresh rate
the two are nearly identical looking purely at the screen

motion tracking and controllers at launch are what set them apart
>>
I personally don't get the appeal of it. It's not like I don't like the technology, but I wonder what it will be used for. Not interested in waifus and h-games desu.

presence
>>
>>51810580
sim games, anything with a cockpit
shit like job simulator are neat too

FPS's like that subway demo or any number of those zombie shooters look like a nice adaptation of what people already know
>>
>>51810376
Vive is supposed to have a better tracking system, but the oculus touch controller looks better (which doesn't ship with the headset anyway). Vive's controller looks like a bulky wand, although I hear it is deceptively light, oculus' controller looks really small and like something you would forget you're even holding after a while, and it "tracks" movement of each finger so you can do things like point.
>>
>>51810625
Yea, but in which kind of game (I don't think it matters in other software)?
For a while, until the thing becomes mainstream, few developers will look to make something for it. I just worry that diving into it immediately as it is commercialized would mean being stuck for a while with just porn games. That's just my view on it.
>>
Bought a dk2 off of eBay for $600, check pricing the next day $750+ contemplating selling it as I only have two games for it, and lack of head tracking support for games destroyed the experience, give it another year and you could possibly find the sweet spot for VR, rn though i wouldn't recommend it
>>
>>51810737
>buy a dev kit
>for developers
What did you expect, honestly? Most developers are laying low so that they line up their releases with the consumer headset launch. Of course you're not going to get much playable software right now.
>>
>>51810737
>buying a DK2 for $600
>complaining about nogames
What did you expect? It's a developer's kit.
>>
>>51810696
Well, anything where your point of view is like a cockpit or a driver's seat can be very immersive with a device like this, since you feel you're sitting down anyway and looking around is really intuitive, you just do that.

FPS games may or may not work depending on how easily you get motion sick and how much the "floating eyeball" effect was annoying you before as VR makes that much worse. Also, many shitty ones take away control from the player frequently, which can be very disorienting if it locks the camera.

Good off-the-shelf VR like this could also be very useful for training machine operators --- or even operating the machines. I think some army was testing them to see if they could give tank drivers a better view of their surroundings.
>>
>>51810737
What's the screen quality and fov like? Is it like looking down a pair of binoculars at a screen door?
>>
>>51808090
:^^)
>>
>>51811031
http://vr.mkeblx.net/oculus-sim/

This was pretty accurate for DK1 at least.
>>
>>51807850

>>
>>51811031
DK2 user here, the FOV is closer to ski goggles than binoculars.

>>51811107
The 1080p setting is also pretty close to DK2 quality.

The reason why the Harmonix game is an Oculus exclusive title is not because they spent a lot of money on it, but because of the way the game interacts with the motion tracking in the Rift.

The Rift and Vive use 2 totally different ways to track motion.

This is why it's an Rift exclusive game.

Inb4 Rift fanboy
I'm going to get both. Vive first it seems because I've heard people who have tried both are saying the Vive is by far the best.
>>
>>51812277
are you stupid?
That's not the reason why it's exclusive you fucking retard.
it's because oculus is buying exclusives
you
are
a
fucking
retard
>>
>>51812277
while the vive has an "inverted" motion tracking system compared to the rift it is inconsequential for a studio like harmonix to adapt from one to another
>>
>>51812405
It shouldn't even matter anyway because the API is supposed to take care of abstracting this detail away.
>>
>>51807540
I am going to grab a cv1 instead of waiting on the vive.

At least with oculus I know what to expect, HTC has been shady lately keeping quite about their early launch and changing their minds at the last moment with little information of what to expect of their final consumer version.

I am worried about warranties as well if you recieve a defective product, that goes for oculus as well. They both seem like good products that are close in hardware specifications, my money will be on who provides better after sales support.

Don't want to shell $400+ only to be fucked over if my unit comes banged up or missing a few pixels even if said unit offers a slight edge over the other.

Length of the warranty is important as well some defects might show up after a few months of use.
>>
>>51812311
They bought 1 game where they wanted to tailer made everything for a system they are making every single part for.

I've seen people comparing this with examples where keyboard manufacturers pays a game dev to make the game exclusive to their keyboards.
This is just a really bad example which doesnt make sense in this regard.

If Valve and HTC made the motion tracking in the Vive similar to what's in the Rift, this wouldn't be a problem, but since there are no standards in this HMD category yet, there will be exclusives at first.

Maybe in 3-4 years when everything is settled and we have found out what works best and whatnot, maybe then we can each agree on 1 standard.

It wont be exclusive in that sense.
You just have to use a mod to convert the motion tracking signal from the Vive into a signal that are similar to what a Rift would send.
>>
>>51812441
>which doesnt make sense in this regard.
It's literally 1:1 comparable.
>>
>>51812277
>I'm going to get both.
Literal cancer. This is the kind of shit that is going to make VR into a console war. I don't want multiple pieces of hardware to use every piece of software, I want an open standard.
>>
>>51812463
the problem with come with the non-standard controllers
however the oculus is shipping with an xbox controller, so most devs are assuming that as the lowest common control formfactor
>>
>>51812460
>being this stupod

You would be right if we where talking about a keyboard manufacturer who makes all the key press signals be sent as a normal bit signal and where another manufacturer sent the signals as smoke signals from a small bonfire in the middle of the keyboard.
