the colors are deliberately bold and oversaturated, cartoon like. they were drawn by hand. if you want more 'realistic' looking graphics, look at homm3.
blizzard gets this too, look at wc3, wow, etc. they have deliberately made it with unrealistic, cartoon-like colors and shapes, because while it doesn't look as 'realistic', it helps our visual subsystems identify and discriminate objects faster.

Never played the spring version. Been meaning to for a while last time I used Linux I think totala just worked fine through wine so I didn't bother. This was a couple of years ago so I'm not 100% on that.

Spacechem is also good, but it has less of a difficulty curve and more of a difficulty limit. I guess the faux-chemistry wrapping might offend you too, I don't really know. I thought it was good, but I just couldn't fucking do it after a certain point.
