From what I can tell about how it installs, it tries to be super duper safe about everything. It downloads, and then it checks the integrity, double checks the integrity, simulates installing, checks the integrity of THAT, deletes the simulated install and so on...
Windows Update is meant to be run automatically without the user's intervention too so there's extra features to make sure nothing breaks if they shut down or something else while updates are running, which slows it down even more.
I'd like it if windows update had an option to turn off all that safety, but since Windows is for your common retard or Granny we know everyone would be wrecking their machines overnight without that protection.
