I didn't found a recent Linux for Beginners thread so here it is with me being the beginner.

I have two questions.

First of all, I have been using Linux distros on my secondary machine for a few years now for Uni and travelling. I startet with Ubuntu and currently running Mint.
Now I want to run a Linux distro also on my primary machine.
>What OS shall I use? I want to mainly Browse, watch movies/porn, write essays etc. and code just a little (but Atom is enough for me, I used it already under Windows)

Now we come to my main-problem. I have bought an Asus of the x751 series and it came with windows. The problem is, that I haven't figued out how to set firstboot to usb. I wanted to start BIOS but it seems to be running UEFI-shit to enable windows-fastboot and such. But whatever I have tried, it didn't boot from USB. (yeah, I have done that before, OS is properly installed on USB)

make sure that there is an EFI bootloader on the usb stick or it won't work
>>
>>51769465
>EFI bootloader
Can you recommend one?

Is the bootloader then resposible for where should be booted from?
>>
>>51769515
use rufus to make the bootable usb, if the usb doesn't include a EFI bootloader it will just be skipped and boot straight into the next bootable device so in this case your windows install.

you could also enter the uefi shell at boot time, and load the bootloader from there.

from the uefi shell:
>map
lists all the devices availables
>FS0: or BLK0:
switches to device

from there navigate the filesystem with ls/cd and launch the bootloader usually named bootx64.efi

does rufus automatically install a EFI bootloader when I install an .iso on it?

The method per shell will be tried, thank you!!

Also I dl'ed rufus just now and try this also.
>>
>>51769641
yes rufus will make it bootable for UEFI, just check the options
>>
Create uefi enabled USB drive or it won't boot and go with what you like for a distro
>>
>>51769654
Awesome! I now wait till the usb device is ready and then try it.

thanks a lot!

I now have put Mint on it again. Any other recommendation?

>>51769668
I just tried >>51769600 to make it boot incluing and EFI bootloader.
>>
>>51769685
mint is good if you want something that works out of the box otherwise just go for arch and be ready to spend some time reading the wiki
>>
>>51769685
If i don't report in in the next 10min I have bricked my machine.
>>
>>51769707
yeah I have been thinking about arch and put it on the VM but since it has no GUI by default I was directly a bit stuck because I am just beginning to work with linux properly. I have made the codeacademy stuff regarding the shell so that works for me but I didn't go much beyond that point yet.

Rufus works fine. Won't brick anything don't worry. I said go with whatever you wanted but if you have time go with arch. You will never want a use another distro. At least this is the case for me.
>>
>>51769760
Also when installing arch don't watch tutorials etc on youtube. Arch wiki is the only thing you need when I first installed arch I followed tutorials I remember failing 3 times and then tried arch wiki installed just fine for the first time. And now I don't even use the wiki for installing. Yeah just a little advice for you

Op cannot inb4 so on that basis, Google it.
>>

OP here from my secondary machine.

Awesome, Rufus worked pretty well!

Now that you guys (just as everyone else here) recommends arch, I will go for it.

What GUI do you recommend for it?

I have already made the experience that almost any wiki is a hundred time better than any video-tutorial.
I remember being at my dad's not having access to wifi and looking up tutorials to get the password. it was a pain in the ass. a wiki helped me out with that pretty well!
>>
>>51769828
I personally use mate with arch
>>51769853
Yeah I think this is a mistake first timers make.Talking from experience, always go for the arch wiki. It is god tier.

It's incredible how after all this years, this comic is still relevant
>>
>>51769891
And after all these years nobody found the original (non-bottom-cut) version. =(

How long does it take people to learn that GNU + Linux is ``THE'' fucking OS and that all the others fucking ``FLAVORS'' are just a set of tools? You should realize after ``a few years'' of using ``Linux distros'' that they are all the fucking same thing.
