Yo /g/, I've been wondering for a while now...

If any of you haven't heard of Redbox, it's a company that's installed Fridge-sized movie-vending machines, that log it's users through credit card, so that you can return a movie to a redbox different than the one you got it from.

Recently, I've been ripping these movies from the discs. As illegal as it is... Are there devices in the discs that enable when the disc is being ripped? Is there anything on the disc, that, when I return it, the vendor has no way of knowing I ripped the movie? It's been putting me on edge lately.

You can download a movie faster than you can decrypt and rip it from a DVD.
Don't even bother unless you're ripping something rare like an anime OVA dvd that came packed in with the limited edition of a manga.

There might be DRM on the movie itself. But other than that, no.
>>
>Are there devices in the discs

no.

Use open-source ripper. Look though source thoroughly before ripping. Then you know your good. Most likely you can't prove what the source was if you tweak some of the encoding options.

This.

Why bother paying to rent it from redox and rip it when you could just torrent it in the first place, spend nothing, and end up with a digital copy to do whatever with?

Do you know how DVDs work senpai

A ripper does nothing different than a DVD Player

Except saves the data to a file instead of streaming it

This, again.

If you are really worried and feel compelled to spend money, then pay for a VPN or seedbox to protect against those meaningless DMCA letters.

You never know how a pirate upload of a movie has been encoded to "improve" the picture quality.

DVD at least is a standard.

Blu-ray is better tho

Because scene regulations are largely shit.

Usually they make note of it in the NFO

A lot of those dvds are probably created specifically for the service and purposely lacking features like what Netflix has.

Aside from DRM, what features?

They might not come with extras. That's it.
