Collectors and repurposers welcome!

Share your old PCs!

Mine are:
Dell Dimension l1000r, I use it as a 90s gaming PC.

HP Pavilion d4100e, it's my main PC in my bedroom, mainly shitposting and watching movies.

I just got two old Gateway Solo 2500 laptops for free from my instructor. They still run xp, but I'm probably going to install puppy on one of them, and Lubuntu or something else on the other.

You'll have to give me a minute, because most of the places online have mixed specs, so I'll just see for myself

Both of them have:
256mb of 144pin SDRAM
either a 20gb SSD or very small HDD (all it says is Disk Drive)
a floppy drive
and a Mobile Intel Celeron at 333 MHz

Kek. Also, scratch that. Only one of these is a 2500. The other is a 9150, so give me another minute.

>>
>>51763177
I'll probably end up using one just for shitposting, and install xubuntu or some fork of DSL.

>>
>>51763219
Fucking shit man, you got lucky what's the story behind these again?
>>
>>51763251
So I go to a tech college, and my instructor has been in IT for something like 40 years now, and he's switching campuses. So I helped him move his entire classroom.
All of these PCs and laptops were used for his students to install operating systems before VMware and VirtualBox was a thing. Since they were his personal systems, and they weren't registered to the state, he didn't need them anymore. He said he didn't want to keep carrying them around, so he gave them all to me, along with a few keyboards and mice. Kek.

Amazing, my dell I got from a friend for my Dimension 2400, and the HP I got from a thrift store for 30 bucks.
>>
>>51763398
Nice, man.
Out of those 3 E4100s, I took all 512mb of RAM and an 80gb HDD out of one, and put them in another to give it 160gb of storage and 1gb of RAM, and installed lubuntu to use as a seedbox, and I plan on using another as a pfSense router.

The only old computer I have a still working (sort of I'll explain) at the moment is an IBM Personal System 2 which was my first computer.
Now I don't have the original monitor (but I use a 17in dell one instead that I used to use with a proview 17 in a dual screen setup on this machine before I went LCD) , nor the original clacky keyboard (just any ps/2 keyboard works pretty much) nor does the thing have a working hard drive but the thing can boot off a dos floppy and then switch out to run some simple games off the floppy like my 80s dos wheel of fortune game. No emulator can ever compare to hearing the sounds coming off the original speaker as far as nostalgia goes.

Dell Dimension something ca 2002
2Ghz Pentium 4
768MB DDR2
Radeon 9200 128MB
Factory Standard Modem and Ethernet card
SoundBlaster 128
Linksys Wireless G

My go to for playing 90s games, basically it's a SCUMM box for Pajama Sam that my nephew can use... I have this older MIDI keyboard that can be powered by the SB's Game Port and i use it with that as well.

--

Gateway 4DX2/66 (486 Dx2/66)
32MB Ram *Upgraded from 8*
325MB HDD
Came with Dos 6 + Win 3.11
I removed it and installed windows 95
But i'm just going to install clean freedos 1.1
Has a CD Drive controlled by the Soundcard *I find this amusing as every pc i owned never did that shit* - Uses some Proprietary LMSI shit that died in the 90s

Good for if i ever have the itch to do low level shit, Primary Use : Adlib Tracker 2

--

Dell Latitude CPt

Centrino CPU
Win 2k Pre loaded on it
Got it from some dude from a school, gonna have to reinstall win2k on it some how (no CD Drive, probably gonna have to take out the HDD, put it in another old rig, and install win2000 to get rid of the school shit on there)

Gonna use it for shitposting in bed and IRC, maybe old vidya...

Correction on that Dell Dimension - it's DDR not DDR2

>inb4 fucking why

PC 1 ) Because it was free - GPU, RAM were added from another machine, The Soundblaster i pilfered throwing old PCs away from my High School, The Wifi card, i bought off my buddy for $10

PC 2 ) Because i put all of $30 in to this (including initial purchase), and I kinda like the OPL3 Sound Chip

PC 3 ) It was free - it's a solid laptop - i have a gaymen laptop too but, why not use this monster if i can

9 spring loaded gear like registers and 80 keys?
It can add subtract multiply pretty easily and divide if you're brave enough.

Currently restoring it, when I got it the last overflow wasn't working correctly and the last column wasn't working properly. Got the mech 100% working again but I have no idea what to do about the case as people go apeshit for patina but I want that beautiful copper look.

So far I have cleaned and polished 4 of the keysteams and decades of old oil stains from the keys. 76 more to go...

I've given the mech a kerosene bath to clean out ancient oil and dirt, and then a wd-40 variant bath for long term lubrication.

Heres a front pic of the mech.

Doesn't really have much bearing on what I was saying though, the Duo wasn't the only system that offered docks like that, IBM made some pretty serious docks for 7 and 6 series ThinkPads. The pathetic "high-end" dock I use on my T420 doesn't even give me an additional ExpressCard slot for an external PCIe cage.

They're also just cool to have around as historical/conversation pieces, the eMate and the original iBooks modeled after them had a huge influence on modern portable computer design as we know it today.

I honestly am not sure what you could do with that without, you know, the rest of a computer.

I actually do own one
It's from my dad's old as balls PC, I took it out before throwing the PC in the trash.
I'd love to get it booted up and all but I can't really find a data sheet for it

I'm pretty sure the 8051 is entirely self-contained, or at least just requires a couple support chips.

is there any new palm tops out?

i'd love to see an E-Ink palm top with BSD

8051 is a microcontroller so in theory its a whole computer on a single chip

I think palm tops are dead buddy. Bestyou can do is get a decent used one. My friend has an Acer palm top he refuses to let go of even though he won't use it.

Low resolution photo of my recapped SE/30 from this summer (in the SE SuperDrive case because its own was pretty yellowed and beat up.) It has System 7.5.5 now, though, which can play MIDIs and B&W video on Quicktime 2.5. Also plays Amiga FastTracker/ProTracker MODs. Only 8MB of RAM are installed, but it's enough to do anything worthwhile, as Ethernet PDS cards cost upward of fucking $170. Also, the CRT is a bit fuzzy. I had a good one, but I broke its neck by accident when checking the machine's insides for the 300th time. The analog board is warped and acts a bit funky (screen may stretch a fraction of a centimeter horizontally), but these are all dumb components that can be replaced for 20-50 dollars. The living, reclaimed motherboard is the most expensive and vital part of the machine.

Serial console would be pretty cool.

Is Apple's serial port just RS-232 with a different connector or is it a different standard?

It's nifty. Mine's sticky as shit though, I'm not sure if it was built that way or it's just deteriorated after 22 years of god knows what the old owner was doing with it. It had three big ass strips of velcro on the bottom when I first got it and it's missing the plastics that fit over the IR and memory ports

>>51767323
I believe Apple's serial port is based on the RS-422 standard, but it's backwards compatible as far as I'm aware.

I'd check around to make sure though.

20 MHz "SL enhanced" 386 (not really sure if it's a real 32-bit 386 or an SX), 4 MB of RAM (shipped with 2), MS-DOS 5.0/Windows 3.1 in ROM and a 10 MB PCMCIA linear flash SSD.

Pretty good considering it was a super-portable system that ran for 9 hours on some AAs but with the raw performance of a typical desktop from around two years ago.

There's nothing modern that comes close and that's very sad. To me, the DOS-based palmtop, especially the HP stuff, was lightning in a bottle. With PC XT compatibility, PCMCIA slot that could use real peripherals, and amazing battery life, you had a huge amount of functionality jammed into a 200LX. HPs unmatched (at the time) calculator division was in charge of design and it really shows.

HP NX7400 reporting

Core 2 duo T7400 2.0Ghz
4 GB DDR2
100 GB HDD
PCI-E mini Wifi card (some qualcomm thing)
inbuilt blue tooth
8 USB 2.0 ports
1 Cardbus slot (haha does anyone even use this?)
1 Vga port
1 one dialup modem (lol wut)
1 ethernet port for wired internet
244mb Vram ( 2006 laptop being this shit lel )

did a refurbish on this as it was in the trash at my work
I shit-post on this at night
wifi drops off every time I close this laptop so annoying.
I can see why this model is rare as fuck man its running hot all the time acorrding to websites the cpu was a limited and shitty laptop cpu that runs hot.

also at 4.5kg is really heavy laptop I hope my next isn't that heavy

Dunno if this thread is appropriate, but...

Something I've wanted to do is build a new device that runs an old OS. So for example, taking a 68k CPU built with a more modern, power efficient process along with other relevant components and putting it in a 12-13" laptop case, a 1024x768 display, and a li-on battery and installing System 7.5.5 or Mac OS 8 on it for a blissfully simple computing device with a modern touch.

Is this a neat idea or just dumb?
>>
>>51767876
What's stopping you? If you want to do something like that, and can get the parts for dirt cheap/free, then I don't see why you shouldn't. I'd like to see results though.

Not trying to burst your dream but old computers usually had a number ASICs for graphics and sound. Maybe you can find FPGA implementations for those tho.

I bought a Sun Ultra 5 for 20€, is that old enough? I'm waiting for it to ship.

I also have a c128, but don't know how it works because no monitor for it.

commodore pc II for 60€, yay or nay? Monitor and keyboard included.

not sure if this counts

black macbook (1st gen) hacked with a diff EFI boot, installed xubuntu on it. use it to shitpost.

working on an apple newton, going to put a raspberry pi in it with a new display and adapt the keyboard to work.

made an apple 0330 mechanical keyboard usable with a teensy board to convert it to usb and use it on a daily basis (even right now)

Specs:
Intel 486SX 33MHz
8MB RAM
2GB CompactFlash Card as C:
SoundBlaster
640x480 CSTN LCD

Awesome little computer that lasts 4 hours on a charge using an aftermarket Sony Camcorder battery that you could still buy.
The keyboard however is a nightmare to use, it is a full 7 row Japanese keyboard condensed into a device the size of an iPhone 6 Plus.

Can't be that big of a problem for at least 68k Macs, seeing how Basilisk II, vMac, etc do sound and graphics just fine. I agree that an FPGA would probably be the way to go though.

>>51768080

That's really a shame. NewtonOS is neat and probably one of the first well-developed/consumer-ready ARM operating systems.

Kinda funny how Apple came full circle after killing the Newton + ARM off in the late 90s.

That is more powerful than my laptop that I am using to post this reply.
>>
>>51766157
It wasn't just a dock. It added a chunk of computing power to it that put it on par with a desktop. My idea was having a light little laptop that is reasonably powerful, however, its focus would be portability and battery life, and then you'd plug it in to a machine at home that would turn it into a little powerhouse. When I learned of laptop eGPUs, I thought "that's a really neat idea, it'd be cool if there were a dock of some sort that would add that kind of computing power in addition to CPU power".

That's just what the duo did, though I'm oversimplifying everything it did. The other anon explained it well
