It was unimpressive at launch because they first had a massive setback (Texas Instruments killed the OMAP platform so they had to pretty much re-engineer the thing) and then needed to get it to market really fast before the software was properly done. Now the software has been done for some time and they just released a massive update to make it even better AND lowered the price.
So unless you're one of those "Oh... Got to have that qHD screen, quad core A57 CPU and 3GB of RAM even if it'll be the size of a flat shoe"-types it's not that appealing. However if you do like stuff like a swappable battery, a microSD card slot and an OS that isn't monetized trough spying on you, it's an appealing device.

However, the trackpad is shit compared to a right analog stick in 95% of cases. The left pad is shit when used as a d-pad. The placement of the abxy buttons is shit. I only use it for games made in GameMaker Studio because their support for wireless xbox 360 controllers is broken on Linux.

No its not. Not even slightly. Here's what you do for first-person games:
For games that support mouse and gamepad input at the same time, make the right trackpad a mouse, map all other normal controls to the gamepad. Turn the mouse sensitivity ALL the way down in game, turn the pad sensitivity up. If the game doesn't allow simultaneous input, try "mouse-like joystick" mode, max out the in-game joystick camera sensitivity, mess with pad sensitivity until is feels decent (it's never as good as mouse-mode input).
Next, enable the gryo as a mouse on right-pad touch and max out its smoothing. This increased your overall accuracy a shit-ton, and is perfect for sniping. If you pad jitters much, you can also enable the gyro on a trigger soft pull so you can take your thumb off and still aim.
Finally, just mess around with the pad and gyro sensitivities while playing the game. Getting used to the controller for the first time can take up to 10-15 hours of gameplay, after which you'll feel comfortable with it. It takes getting used to because the input is so different from a gamepad and the muscle memory needs to be rebuilt.
Spinning around and firing off headshots on this controller is super duper easy, just need the practice.

It's not amazing, but it also depends on what you're doing. For games that play with the d-pad (sidescrollers pretty much), just make sure to turn the haptic to maximum and turn off require-click. Mess with the deadzone too. It's not as good as a normal dpad but it's workable, and the left pad is great for mouse-heavy games so that you can click your face buttons or your joystick while still using the mouse.
I would suggest watching through some of Woodie's videos. He does a good job of coming up with some good starting configurations that make the controller godly against any normal gamepad for most things.

Some games have OK mappings for MKB that you should use (not too many controls, or controls that can be mapped to the same key do just that), but in some cases (Fallout 4) they use too many buttons to do certain things (Enter and E sometimes do the same thing, sometimes they're different, same goes for scrolling and up-down arrows), where on the controller those controls are mapped much better (except then it doesn't support mouse).

I agree that the joystick and XYAB buttons aren't placed optimally, and that the DPAD trackpad needs some work to become relevant.
However the right pad is GODLIKE for aiming in FPS (instead of waiting for the crosshairs to be in position you simply aim and shoot) and the fact that it can act as a mouse is awesome in games that require it (Civ 5 for example)

I LOVE this controller.
I didn't like it too much at first because I found it difficult to aim and shoot at the same time, but it was just something I had to get used to. For shooting games it's about on par with a normal controller for me, maybe a bit better but I don't use it for those types of games.
For games I would normally use a controller for instead of a kbm it works wonderfully. It's really really good for emulators. I can use the built in gyro for super mario galaxy for example. It's also really great for all those old console ports that don't have xinput support. You can just bind the buttons to whatever you want from the steam overlay. Now I can play games like Beyond Good and Evil and Silent Hill without having to use a joy2key program.
The one issue (which is not really a problem for me) is that the left thumbpad isn't really good for movement when it requires a click, works fine for what most games use the dpad for.
The right thumbpad works like a trackball, that's the reason it's so accurate compared to a joysick.
