My mom is really weird. Like she's really religious but hasn't been to church in like 2 decades. She's very racist and homophobic too but loves the ``cute things'' gay people do on TV. 2008 or 2009.. I could not afford a PC before. I had internet before that on my phone since 2005 or so.
I entered late in the game as far as getting my own connection. Later than all of my friends until ~2007. I'm in my mid 20s in case you're wondering. I would use my friends' PCs for checking MySpace or listening to music. That was my initial inspiration for wanting my own PC. I had a custom PC built for me by some Asian guy that drove a Nissan skyline r34. He went with decent AMD hardware and then I realized there isn't much to do with a PC lacking an internet connection.
I still remember the first thing I did after obtaining access to the triple DUBS. I checked Yahoo's shitty homepage as a test and then my parents said

1995 I think. We upgraded from MSDos to Windows 95 with AOL. I had absolutely no idea what the internet even was but being a latchkey kid I slow figured out on my own how to use the thing and how it worked. Had to learn to use the dial up too. That was a nightmare when you had a teenage sister in the house always on the phone. Fuck, I did not realize how much my parents were not around until now.

EMachines? As far as I know, EMachines, Gateway and Acer were all lumped into one company somehow. I'm not sure of the details, as they still all sell PCs under their own name, but their support and some of their software are lumped together. My Gateway laptop originally had some Acer power management software on it, the same goes for a neighbors EMachines laptop.
That being said, it wouldn't surprise me if a program like this still exists. Or course, it's only available to original participants, and most likely wouldn't be offering upgrades o PCs purchased today.
