Google it.

Fiber is overrated anyway OP. Why do you think that wall-street converted to RF? Light travels at about 1/2 speed in glass.

You don't have to live in a google fiber area to get 1gbps speeds.

Why are all the current 'fiber cities' absolute shitholes?
Why wouldn't they have focused on Mountain View first and expand from there?
Who the fuck even lives in provo?

They're probably using those cities as guinea pigs.

except for these two

mind you, when I first got Verizon DSL when I lived up in PA, that 2Mbit/s connection seemed like I was the fastest thing on the web, at least compared to AOL dialup (~22kbit/s, about 3kB/s on a good day, we had a 56kbit modem)

stand corrected anon. What is the velocity factor in fiber optics though?
>>
you americans and your "10MBPS down is so slow" bullshit.
i am at 64kbps down 32kbps up in the designated country.
the max i could go by shelling out shitloads of shekels is 1.25mbps down.
4G has just started though. 2016 is going to be much better.
>>
>>51693944
my 9Mbit down was the best of 3, I did it again and got like 7Mbit down
9Mbit is about right for my peak speed though. Actual realistic average download speeds for me tend to be ~800kB/s, so ~6.4Mbit/s.

first attempt at speedtesting today was like 3Mbit/s down, but that was obviously wrong, dunno what happened there

>>51693992
>i am at 64kbps down 32kbps up in the designated country.
I'm sorry.

10 years ago, I'd be a little jealous though, that's twice dialup speed. Waiting 5 minutes for a flash to download instead of 10 would have meant a big deal to me back then.
>>
>>51692487
All i wanna know is if Google will kill you for torrenting. Fiber is being considered for my city but if torrenting is a no go, then I'm perfectly fine with my 50/50 connection from Verizon. If anything, Verizon gives the least shits about torrenting out of any of the large US telecom companies.
>>
>>51693906
Ausfag here. I'd kill for your speeds. On the other hand, I'm not too sure about your ping.

>>51693350
But you do to not have to deal with 1gb/s with 1TB/mo data cap...good thing att counts inbound and outbound towards the data cap or you could've taken the whole month to hit 1tb at that speed right???

To be fair if I lived in a place with Google fiber I wouldn't care if my town is shit since I'd be using my fiber so much.
>>
>>51693821
You remember how long it was for the "construction" phase? I'm in that phase now and I see them laying the orange pipe to hold the fiber all along the street. Got my Google Fiber shirt in the mail too.

like, FL's one saving grace is the 10/10 weather, but there's nothing wrong with PA

1gbps down 200/300 up is like 25$ , stay mad
>>
>>51694361

Like at least 1.5 years. They kept delaying construction. After finishing stuff on the street which was like a year after actual ditch digging, they said we'd be connected in 2 weeks, and we were.

>>51694438
No, the Fiber Jack outputs Ethernet, and Ethernet plugs into GS108T, and GS108T plugs into RT-N66U.
>>
> implying you need that speed to buy druqks online

Dude ADSL is fine lmao.
>>
>>51694606
>No, the Fiber Jack outputs Ethernet

Am I jealous? Yes
Am I disappointed? Yes

Why wouldn't you want a pure fiber optics modem, if that shit is coming right into your living room anyways? I understand it doesn't make a real difference, but come on. My OCD is tingling.
>>
>>51694643
Yeah, it's kinda retarded. Part of it is probably device price.

I could be utilizing 1800Mbps throughput with the right gear, but right now I can only use 1000Mbps at a time.
>>
>>51694584

id be okay with the lowest plan they offer. 5MB/s for free just pay a $300 one time construction fee up front. cant beat that.

sadly, theyre never coming to nowheresville ohio. stuck with time warner forever.

>>51693821
>bypassing botnetbox

in what way? because they charge a rental fee or something? better speeds? the botnet isn't on your end.
>>
>>51694938
5Mbps not MB/s

The included network box is slower, has worse WiFi, crashes, and doesn't support local configuration, and doesn't support any features whatsoever.
>>
>>51693771
Because the bay area is a nightmare for Google to install the new infrastructure, red tape, and local political BS everywhere. I have no doubt they really really want to. But it's rolling out first in shitholes first because those places really want to become not shitholes. So they give Google a green light to do whatever the fuck they need to, hoping that it will attract new businesses and their workers to reinvigorate the community. They want that sweet delicious tech money nectar.
>>
>>51694662
which is still insanely fast for a home internet connection by any measure. ya im jealous too.

>>51695080
youre right my mistake. thats still over 600KB/s, id be good with that for free.

i figured since it was google you wouldnt need to. apparently crap hardware by default applies to all ISP's, even google.
