MATE all the way. For now.
I'm tempted to give OpenBox a try but I don't know if I can be bothered to configure it all.
>>

plenty of premade dotfiles you can use and just lightly edit to suit you. Besides, once you've done it once and backed them up doing it again takes less time.

i3, I don't really care much about configuring it a lot, and it serves my needs

TWM is all that you need

I had been using XMonad, but now I mostly use my work computer which has GNOME because my coworker/friend told me during the hiring process that no one would help me if I had any problems and didn't use a sane DE.

It's not as bad as I would have thought, but mostly I just have a web browser open on one screen and a terminal open on the other and use neovim to manage all my terminal sessions.

AwesomeWM
>>
>>51682833
I like common lisp too, is it worth trying over awesome? I was worried it wouldn't have as many features in its api.
>>
>>51682942
I can't make a comparison since I have never used awesome. For me it is well suited. In a VM I use ratpoison but I have it only for some basic tasks (the VM) therefore it doesn't bother me. For real work I would stick to stumpwm because the mode-line and the menu are both very good.

API: like I mentioned, I cannot compare it, but if you know and like Common Lisp the API is great. Especially if you go for SBCL. Then you can use Quicklisp. I haven't figured out how to use Quicklisp dynamically in ECL but it would be great because the SBCL binary is pretty large and it consumes more memory than ECL.
