Lots of smart people who know better than that still make that connection.
People are eager to defend what they already believe, and counterintuitivly having a very logical mind can give you the tools to delude yourself with logic.
Logically pointing out why someone is wrong will simply lead that person to rearrange what you said in their mind and reinforce their own reasoning.

In reality, you have to always be willing to re-examine all your assumptions, and be willing to admit you made mistakes. No, that's actually false, because "willing" still implies some resistance. You have to actually seek to discard any wrong assumption at all cosst, and be grateful when someone points our your mistakes. But that's not possible with the ball and chain that is ego.
Engineers who think black and white are very poor engineers. I have met a few. They are usually good at a few things, but don't see the larger picture. Thankfully, they are not the majority.
