I've never used linux before other than in school for some server stuff. So this is my first time installing it. I read in a few spots that microsoft made it so if you changed your boot loader it would lock you out of your computer.
I bought a laptop with windows 10 pre installed. How do I go about adding linux mint, or do i just do the normal way that can be found on youtube and such.

that's retarded
why would they do that

Yes. Just make sure you set up the dual partition prior to installing mint. Set you storage drive (hard drive or ssd) to fat 32 when you partition it. Then restart and access your installation CD or USB via boot menu (your less f2 or f11) depending on the model of your computer/laptop.

apparently microsoft was saying they did it to protect from malware that can be placed in the boot loader. But I have no clue what I'm talking about and just going off what I read. Just want to be certain so I don't screw shit up.

I dual boot Win10 with Linux just fine. With EFI Windows plays quite nice desu

Consider using Elementary OS.
I think you won't have any problems as long as your partitions are not dynamic.
Turn off secure boot.
