I got a free year Kaspersky 2013 license with my motherboard and it's been fine. I'll probably switch to MSE or Avast Free as soon as it expires.

All antivirus software is to be considered snakeoil as it gives the user a false sense of security. Only the most common malware will be detected as heuristic scans are until this day extremely simple and making any bytecode fully undetected by pattern scans is nearly as easy today as it was 10 years ago.
Just don't be retarded and you aboid 99.99% of all security threats. That means, deactivate plugins such as flash, don't run untrusted binaries and such basic shit. If someone is out to infect you personally, and if that someone is any good at what he does, then no software in the world will help you anyway.
