I'm getting a 1TB drive but I don't think I'd fill even a 500 GB one.
>>
>>51653295
1TB of storage is plenty for most people.
>>
>>51653369
yeah I bought a 250gb ssd worrying that I would run out. Never went beyond 200gb.
>>
>>51653295
ideally, none

it should be all ssd based

even 1tb ssds are dirt cheap now, there's no excuse
>>
>>51653533
>hundreds of dollars is dirt cheap
fuck off
>>
without data hoarding of any kind: 80-120GB SSD
normal data hoarding (few videogames, few videos, self-made videos, downloading music etc): 500GB+opt. SSD
medium data hoarding (lots of vidya gaem, not a lot, but high quality movies, lot of music but lossy): 1-1.5 TB
high level data hoarding (flac only music library, lot of modern vidya which might be 60GB/game, lot of HD movies etc): 2-3TB
/a/: as much as you can fit in your case
>>
>>51653295
i have that one
>>
>>51653615
Im not who u replied to but that is cheap for ssd
>>
If you don't play games 1 tb is more than enough..
If you're a gamer get 2 tb + i'm not even joking.
>>
>>51653716
yeah, ridiculous how huge games became.

and most of it is just bloat because storage is cheap.
>>
>>51653708
"cheap for ssd" =/= "cheap as dirt"
>>
>>51653716
I just uninstall the games that I haven't played in the last month or so. Retain the savegame directory in case you want to re-install it at a later date and play some more though.
>>
If you do any kind of actual work on your computer, 3-15TB depending on what it is
If you're just a /g/ shitter with a riced desktop 500GB. That way you can buy a single affordable SSD and not have to fuck about with anything.
>>
I have 5TB of hdd storage, and 240gb of ssd storage
total it's around 60% full
>>51653963
I got a 1TB drive just for games and I haven't filled it yet, even with my entire steam library
but I don't play a lot of newer games that have 20gb+ installs
>>
>>51654017
I've got a 1TB drive for movies, anime, tv shows, and games and I rarely have more than 300GB stored on it at any one time because I clean out the shit that I have no interest in watching/playing every once in a while.
>>
>>51653295
I have 32 GB on my phone
>>
>>51654043
I've got a pretty fast connection, but I don't like having to redownload/delete things
>>
Depends. I assume you mean on a main system, if it's an auxillary system you don't need a HDD, 256GB SSD is more than sufficient. I have a 256GB SSD, 2x2TB HDDs. That's probably enough for most people.

If you don't care about HQ media or stream it all, you could easily get away with 500GB just as an SSD. If you like to keep a moderate level of HQ shit and can afford it I'd get a decent 6TB drive either as part of the main system or in a NAS.
>>
>>51654065
>HQ media
500GB is 20 blu-ray quality movies. You don't need 20 movies on your disk at once. For music, as long as you're simply listening there's no need to go beyond MP3. Which puts you at ~100mb per album or 5000 albums on 500GB.

And before you start. No, nobody has ever been able to tell apart lossless and MP3 >200kbs in a blind test. You can try it yourself online fegget
>>
>>51654058
Well, I rarely ever watch anime or TV episodes over again so I can delete those pretty safely after watching them. I'll keep some of the better movies around so I have something to put on when I invite a girl over to "watch some movies" but if the movie was shit then I'll get rid of it. When I get burnt out on a particular game it's normally at least 2-3 years, if ever, before I get the itch to play it again so I can pretty safely delete those as well.
>>
>>51654136
>You don't need 20 movies on your disk at once.

Some people actually have dedicated HTPCs with an expansive selection of movies, tv shows, and music stored on them.
>>
>>51654168
And those people are fucking faggots or have 3rd world internet (US, Australia...)
>>
>>51654196
Man, even with my 50/50 connection it still takes a while to download a single 25GB+ 1080p Blu-Ray rip. Think it of how watching a movie on netflix is quicker and more convenient than driving to a fucking redbox to rent one.

>/a/: as much as you can fit in your case
Too true, I just can't bring myself to clean this mess or catch up on my backlog.
>>
>>51654259
It takes a while, and while that while takes you can watch the 10 other movies you can comfortably store along with everything else you need on your 500gb drive
>>
>>51653295

500GB is plenty

I just got my new system yesterday, with a 500GB SSD, and I know I'll only use 200GB at most of it. Currently I'm only using 150GB of the space.
>>
>>51654259
What I do is collect some shit that don't need hq rips like sitcoms or seasonal anime then watch that as I download my heavy stuff, or just play video games and do the same, I have really really crap internet though (.5 mbps) so I can only dream of that level of quality.

>27$ per megabyte

Sheeeittt... In 20 years we'll look back at todays technology and think the same way.
>>
>>51653295
I stopped needing most of it a few years ago after the streaming revolution took over and I watched/bought all my nostalgia shows and music became super easy to find on YouTube.

For my Steam library, 1TB would be reasonable
>>
>>51654358
>forcing some completely unrelated water-volume analogy

Why do info graphic fags do shit like this?
>>
>>51654396
To visualize things which use numbers too high for humans to reasonably keep up with.
>>
>>51654358
Processing power isn't really doubling anymore because transistors can't get any smaller, and need exponentially more power to get faster.

It's called the "Power Wall".
>>
>>51654358
Why do people just assume we aren't going to hit a wall at all and that our ability to improve tech is always going to remain the same level no matter what?
>>
>>51654434
Could've accomplished the same thing using a bar graph relatively comparing the performance of the human brain to computers instead of bringing in the water volume (in fluid ounces) of Lake Michigan and showing a very crude visual representation (that's not at all drawn to scale) of the "lake" filling up with water. It was just distracting to be honest family.
>>
>>51654486
because ignorance, clickbait and they love to shit out infographics
>>
>>51654480
Even if Moors law slows down to doubling every 3 years or so, it doesnt matter.

>>51654486
That criticism isnt new, Moors law has slowed down because Silicon based 2D chips are hitting all limits, but new technologies are already in various stages of development. New materials, Using light instead of electrons, 3D chips, memristors and so on.

And if we hit the physical limits of down sizing 3D photonic processors one day we can still make the processors larger to increase processing power.
>>

250 SDD
2Tb+ HDD
>>
For most normals 500 gigs is plenty.

For the average person who plays steam games and stuff 1TB is plenty.

For people like me 4 TB is working well, but I'll need to expand in about 8 months at my current rate.
>>
>>51653434
this.
even with games installed I'm only at 160GB.
I do store things on my 1.5tb scorpio though. so I guess that helps.
>>
>>51654566
3d chips? Are you you saying that the chips will be using volume and not just planes or what?
>>
If it is a desktop it should have at minimum a 500 GB HDD and a 128 GB SSD for booting.
>>
>2015
>still using spinny rust as primary storage.
Don't do that, get at least a 240GB SSD
>>
>>51653295
I have a 480 GB SSD for all my shit and a 320 GB hard drive that I'm gonna start backing up shit to. A week ago I just had the 320 GB hard drive.
>>
I have two 8x8TB NAS drives sitting on my desk.

My own computer is all SSD though.
>>
>>51653295
Start with 1TB. Buy more when you run out of free space.
>>
>>51654486
Because the idea of certain technologies completely ceasing to advance is retarded.
>>
>>51656111
>ssd for archiving
Yeah I'll stick to my spinny disc.
>>

Objective
>>
You don't need half of a 500gb drive.
Probably 80% of people who claim they need more outright are wrong and never use what they store.
>>
>>51654136
>you don't need 20 movies

No infact you need hundreds safely stored in your HDDs fucking retard
>>
>>51656550
People collect stuff of all kind
Some people collect movies, series, etc

You need more than 500 to do that. It's not rocket science, but i get this is the ameritards peak hour so meh
>>
>>51656608
he also forgets that some professional programs are fucking ginormous : Solid works is like 25GB all by itself, and that's my few years old version.
AutoDesk revit is like 8GB installed before it starts downloading medium and high resolution textures for final renders.

Modo 9k with all its add on packages and basic texture options is pushing 10GB between the app and the files it creates in your %appdata%

Adobe CS might chunk in another 15GB.

Then add Windows 7 pro and updates on top of that (nearly 20GB)

500GB goes not too far. God forbid you keep a lot of your work on the computer, or you do any sort of video editing/ music generation. Or more in tune with here : play a video game once in a while since those take up massive chunks of disk space too.
>>
120GB SSD for OS and programs.
2TB internal för random junk.
4x2TB externals for anime, music, movies, pictures, photos I've taken myself (lol RAW).
The "only get a 1TB HDD, that's all you need" meme died when TBs got cheap.
>>
Fuck, now I feel stupid for ordering a 1TB SSD when they were cheap. I also want to set up a RAID1 with 2 6TB drives too for my hoarding

>>
>>51653533
I just cram in as many old hard drives as I can fit in the case.
>>
>>51656494

No. Must be comparable per kg
>>
For nonlinear video editing and streaming, which is fucking hueg right now, you need all the terabytes you can get. In RAID config because money is on the line. At home, it's hard to go without it either just for fucking around.
>>
>>51654358
capacities aren't nearly growing like they used to, that drive was probably already outdated by the time the advertisement was published (the PC XT and AT systems they were built for sure as fuck were) and nowadays people are still buying high-end shit with 500GB of storage unironically and 60-120GB of totally usable
>>
>>51653295
I've got 2.5 TB in my basic rig, I've only used about 600 GB with HEAVY download and media hoarding (when delete anything if you don't have to?) and a bunch of games
>>
>>51653295
yes
>>
>>51653295

For an HDD I would say 1TB seeing how cheap they are.
>>
>>51653295
Atleast 10TB.
6TB if you plan on going minimal.

I can relate i have 6TB full of my weeabo shit
>>
Wish my laptop had a fucking second drive bay I'd kill for an SSD, the SSHD that shipped with this thing is slow as balls.

I have an external but I can't simply rely on it alone because I don't like seeding off it over USB(made some clicky noise that made me freak out), too many things could go wrong there(even though it is powered by wall socket).

And I really love having 1TB of media at my beck and call whenever I need it.
>>
>>51653369
I have a total of 5Tb spread across 5 drives.
>tfw buying 2 external HDDs was a mistake, one would have been enough.

>tfw he doesn't know what hes talking about.

>>

>high level data hoarding : 2-3TB

Shit, That's not nearly enough to satisfy my hoarding.
Data hoarding easely gets up to 5 TB
>>
>>51656757 here.
>buy two new externals for hoarding
>at the same time, delete a bunch of anime
>whythefuckdidIdothat.jpg
New year soon though, so starting collecting again is going to be nice.

Was thinking of getting some internal HDD instead, but externals are so cheap.
Got the kind that draw power from USB.
>>
I'd probably get by well with an USB 3 flash disk / 32 gig SSD, but then I don't do gayman or store any movies (prefer to watch em online)
>>
>>51653295

Zero, there's this magical new invention called the cloud don't ya know?
