What's the purpose of that smaller expansion card?
>>
>>51645683
Okay, I'll answer this now at the top so as to not get a load of posts asking about it:

Both cards are GPUs. I run GNU/Linux on the metal. One GPU is used by this linux system. I then have a Windows VM for which I use qemu-kvm to passthrough the other GPU. The result is I can switch to windows for playing games and using some CAD applications that aren't on linux. It's very convenient, but requires quite a lengthy initial setup.

It's actually pretty neutral at best, probably more negative when the GPUs start ramping up.

The two 140mm noctua fans surprisingly aren't that great on the radiator, I'm probably going to eventually change it over to the original NZXT fans.

But they're OK. They stay cool enough.
>>
Hi /g/uys, I', planning getting a Fractal Design S, with 7 Fans (2 included + 5 arctic cool). I don't want/can't afford liquid cooling.

Opinions on the case and/or cooling?

My room is usually very hot so I don't think is overkill but I would like to hear opinnions.

I like the case (between other reasons) because of the chance of putting my 2 hdd and new ssd behind the MB.

Interesting, how is the GPU performance on the Windows VM compared to a normal installation? Would it be possible to use the integrated GPU for Linux or does it have to be a dedicated one?

>how is the GPU performance on the Windows VM compared to a normal installation?
Exactly the same FPS in GPU bottlenecked games, so negligible GPU performance loss. The CPU performance is what is down on the virtual machine, but not by much.

>Would it be possible to use the integrated GPU for Linux or does it have to be a dedicated one?
Yes, it's absolutely fine to use the iGPU for the Linux host. The thing only thing you can't do is passthrough the iGPU to the windows VM.

How do you guys keep your /guts/ dust free?
Just did my first thorough cleaning of my 2 year old rig, my CPU heatsink was caked in gunk, even with a dust filter.

>>

>>
>>51649627

Yes

It's not a fix all and is not as good for cooling, but it certainly helps.
>>
>>51649755
What will be a good mid point between dust-free and strong air cooling?
>>
>>51649797

I'm not 100%, but I'd say positive pressure with a CLC? Going on the idea that the CLC directly exhausts heat from the case whereas a tower cooler exhausts air into the case.

Just a guess though.

This Arch wiki page is OK, but won't cover everything you'll run into:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/PCI_passthrough_via_OVMF#Binding_to_VFIO

>Did you encounter any other problems worth mentioning?
There's no problems now it's up and running. There's no 'catch' to running the system this way if that's what you mean.

However, it was a bit of a bumpy ride getting it going in the first place. My system is a web of custom config files, shell scripts and kernel patches to make it all work seamlessly. I'll write a tutorial for the /g/ wiki over Christmas when I have the time to save people like you troubleshooting the same problems. Now I know how, I could set up such a system in an evening, to give you an idea.

Do people who do this have insanely fast upload speed? I see a lot of people talk about having or actually owning some kind of file server or game server.

I feel like if I ever did this trying to legitimately host files I'd be pissed having to wait some where else because my upload peaks at like 5Mb/s.

>Oh I've got that ISO, just let me download it from my file server real quick
>45 minutes/hour later
>OK its done!

I keep a copy of every file I feel like I might want or need on my portable hdd in my purse which I can access with my ultrabook when I'm on the go if I absolutely need it, but even then I usually don't.

I guess I can understand it from a hobbyist point of view though.
>>
>>51650990
If I were pulling something from the server from a remote location, it would be slow for large files yea. I build my server more for storing all my movies and transferring small files like school reports and text book pdfs if my classmates need it.

My LAN speed on the other hand easily pushes 950mb/s when moving files from place to place. For instance when I rip a bluray. A single rip is usually 55gb. Ill rip the bluray over the network to my ssd in my gaming machine because the cpu in my gaming pc is much faster than the sempron 3850. Ill then transfer the finished product back over the network when Im done encoding and shrinking it. Takes longer tp encode than to transfer.

I use my server for my LAN more than remotely accessing it. Sharing a printer over the network, giving access to my movies to my sister from her room etc.
>>
>>51650710

Not sure is srs but it's been fine with any of the eng. software I've used so far, although pSpice isn't very taxing. Inventor is more so, but benefits from a CPU with better single core performance.

Okay yeah that makes sense. I've never lived in a large house, in fact my computer being in my living room, it's directly connected to my entire entertainment center there when I entertain guests who come over for what ever reason, it's all right there.

But if say, I lived in a four bedroom two story house, I could totally understand doing that instead.

His motherboard has the VRM section to really lean on that 4350. With a cooler along the lines of a 212 evo, he can easily get 4.8ghz on the chip. In a less cpu bound game, he'd get along fine.

>>51655058
Because the ramdisk is better/faster than hdd? I don't run UPS.
>>
>>51655081
the ramdisk is significantly faster than the hdd you'd be placing it on and the data is usually (almost always) volatile enough that it would be removed or irrelevant on reboot anyway.

if you don't have enough ram, there's nothing wrong with using storing temp files on an ssd. you're probably going to be replacing it before the extra writes matter in any way.
>>
>>51655225
