yeah but the seamonkey mail and newsgroup reader is literally just thunderbird packaged into the single suite with an add-on manager that support both Firefox and Thunderbird add-ons. If thunderbird. It's not like thunderbird is going to be completely abandoned though. I would be much more worried about the deprecation and removal of XUL and XPCOM binary packages in future comm-central releases. This will totally break a ton of stuff in seamonkey, and I probably will stop updating after that.

They want it to be extremely portable, unfortunately html+js is the only thing that's portable like this. Using HTML5 does open up some interesting opportunities. HTML5 thunderbird would work on iOS and Windows Phone through Safari and IE/Edge respectively. The devs wouldn't have to worry about extensions, Mozilla, Apple, Google, and Microsoft would deal with that. They wouldn't have to maintain their own version of gecko and all of its dependencies.
