The AT&T version of the Galaxy S5 can't be rooted.
Not knowing this, and having just got one, what are my best options for

Just install kingroot app and root it
I'm pretty goddamn sure towelroot works for all versions of the s5, and it's pretty easy to use. literally just tap a button. Might be worth checking into.

Ah, sorry. Tad of an old issue. Forgot that it required a workaround. Don't have an s5 myself, but might want to look into this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=55133105&postcount=1. If towelroot ain't gonna cut it, I'm sure some other bastard on the XDA forums has it figured out by now.

yep, as suspected, i'm fucked. that workaround is for phones on 4.4.2. Mine came with 5.1.1.
I got an android to customize, and this is what happens. Moral of the story: do your research before buying the phone, don't assume root is possible. Also, fuck AT&T

Well, sorry for the false hope there. On the note of debloating, that should be fairly straightforward -- if I recall, debloater doesn't require root. As for customization, I think the most you can do is install custom launchers, icon packs, and the like.
