I have been considering building a phone, based on a cell module (other people have done it). By using a fet/ssr on the power supply to the cell module, you really can have a stand alone full linux system and know (via a LED display) if the external radio module is powered.

I'm a paramedic I've seen shitloads of people (including me) using this one.
It's cheap, indestructible, but the best part about it is you can wash it under running water and rinse it with sanitizer.
If only it had a better battery.
For such a beefy clunky device you still have to charge it quite often.
When not used it holds like 40 days on battery, but calls and messaging drain it pretty fast.

Not for me, I pick minimal look with maximal bang. Ability to tinker with your device is the absolute must for me, started with my Siemens c75, then SE ages, with elfs n shit I made my homescreen look like Windows phone before it even was created, big clipped text, solid colors, etc. You don't need to sacrifice features to have a sleek look, and if you actually want to get rid of all the abilities modern phones provide why don't you go inna fuckin woods?

It runs Android 4.4.4 but does not have Google Play and cannot be installed.

I live in an Asian country (not Japan) and this phone has been unlocked for use on any GSM network.

the problem with 90% of Android flip phones is that they're too goddamn thick. The Japanese flip phones are perfect physically, however they always shit on the software.
The SH-06G ONLY runs on 3G network, cannot connect to wifi and has no Google Play, making it more of a feature phone than a smartphone.
The Aquos K SHF31 is near perfect, but it's sold out in my local country..
Tempted to get the SH-06G because it's one sexy mother fucker.

Not OP but that is one thing that bothers me is that the US market has mostly aimed a people that just want big exposed screen behemiths and all the awesome smaller smart phones you can't get unless you import it and even ignoring the price factors involved, you have to make sure 1. It even has support for your language 2. Your cell provider can even support the thing.

It comes in English or Japanese. Hell, 98% of Japan-exclusive phones come preinstalled with Japanese or English language menus. The shop I go to is able to hack it and install Chinese onto Japanese phones.

Many smartphones released under Docomo and Softbank will give you 3G or LTE speeds in Europe and North America. They started having an open policy last year where any phone that's released after 2014 and have been in service for more than 6 months can be unlocked. Check the UTMS bands of the phone and your local carrier to see if you'll get the speeds you want.
3. Waiting for it to get to you.
Takes up to 2 weeks at most if you order phones on eBay. 3 weeks if you're unlucky cause customs is checking the phone to see there's no battery leaks or potential bomb device.

Kind of, but not really. All I'm asking for are slight extensions on things that are already included in all dumbphones, I don't really see it as a sacrifice in simplicity to beef up the web browser a little or add streaming options to the built-in music player.
The camera is obviously a pipe dream, but the former two I don't really think miss the point at all. A simple device that doesn't run a shitty, bloated toy OS but can still properly render an eBay listing, connect to a spotify account or properly view email attachments doesn't seem that far-fetched a concept.
